Not a fan of water meters myself - I'd much sooner have an unlimited connection (like I do for bb). On a slightly connected subject - I've been reading some correspondance in New Scientist recent about energy smart meters - I hadn't realised that they were initially being pushed so that the companies could do "surge charging" at busy times. I note that isn't heavily publicised! I think I'll be staying on my old fashioned meter https://www.newscientist.com/letter/mg23831791-100-smart-meters-as-a-plan-for-peak-power-pricing/ https://www.newscientist.com/letter/mg23831822-700-smart-meters-as-a-plan-for-peak-power-pricing/

Any idea where to get keys to lock crash bar doors from in UK?

Give your local locksmith shop a call - they were very helpful to me a while back -
Strange email behaviour - opinions please

I've got Comodo running... -
Just curious to see if anyone has an explanation to some observed behaviour on my home setup... I use Thunderbird for emails and in the last 6 months its been pretty sluggish downloading emails from my provider (123-reg) over a pretty nippy 100 meg Virgin line... however.... I've noticed that if I'm downloading (something completely legal) from newsgroups (not provided by 123-reg) and start to grab emails at the same time - they download nearly instantly??? I'm just interested if anyone has an explanation for this??

Personally I'm very disappointed with Westworld, the pace is so slow it makes Mad Men look zingy and I think Humans does a better job of examining the potential conflicts of AI

Went back to our Maplin to see if there were any decent bits left = alas the fancy keyboards I had my eye on were all gone - I did spot these for sale though - does ANYONE use BNC nowadays??

I did similar with my install, and just bodged in a long bit of cat5 as a temporary measure - 17 years later its still working fine - it wasn't even outside cable!

Its never been entirely clear to me WHY there should be a conspiracy about whether the earth is flat or spherical? Who gains from the (so called) conspiracy?
-
Given everything is held in by a wall of ice - the flat earthers must be pretty damned worried by "global" warming!

I've been keeping an eye on a few bits I fancy - but even now they are still more expensive than buying online!

BT Line Rental Reduction?
SpuffMonkey replied to MatthewL's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Well its saving me nearly £18 a month after I dropped the monthly line charge - so I'm well happy I'm sure there are deals to be had with haggling - but it suits me -
BT Line Rental Reduction?
SpuffMonkey replied to MatthewL's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Virgin do this - I dropped the monthly line charge and put in a voip connection so the oldies could still call - saved a fortune! -
Mostly just streaming across the network (preferably by just browsing to shared folders rather than having to run a backend) - but I'm after an up to date set of codec support - my current one doesn't support 265 - and its being used increasingly. Thought this sounded a little bit future proof and a bit better spec than buying a Raspberry and bodging it myself. Happy to look at any alternatives you can recommend.

Looking at replacing my home media streamer - the Vero 4K looks pretty good - anyone got one? What do you think?

At what point do you stop forwarding mail in a new house?
SpuffMonkey replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
We still get occasional letters for the previous owner, and we moved here in 1989! I long ago stopped forwarding them. I also get strange letters from a French local council demanding local taxes - I've written to them, returned the letters, had a school French assistant talk to them for me, and still they come - I've stopped worrying about it now...
