*every teachers desk I suppose the other answer is to try wherever possible to have 'supply attached to the school' ie: local supply rather than agencies Kyle
-
The other disadvantage I thought of is what 'pete' mentioned above - the data isnt live. I assume something along this line would work :- a touchscreen with a physical lock on every classroom desk. put in key. turn on. mark kids absent or present. i Kyle

Yes - its Caller Line Identifer (CLI) that does the 'tagging' The bit I wasn't aware of is having one number assigned to more than one ISDN2e setup. Kyle

Yes, your right. It is cobol, of course it is! Now, William, do you need a Cobol Programmer? Kyle
-
Coldfusion. That does appear to be dead. Now, if you'd said somebody who could code in Cobol...

Do the kids loose the cards?

We've bought in Ranger - yes, its an expensive start up cost - although this was all absorbed before the school had its own internal IT Support. We've carried on paying for it year after year - the ongoing costs are fairly minimal when compared to the costs of sims or similar (about £1k a year). Given a new situation today with a new network, im not sure its the route we'd take. We're all fairly ofay with GPOs etc - just we have Ranger, and its useful and time saving - things like bulk creation of user accounts. We've also got Ranger Remote Control in our Discreet IT Suites and it proves quite a useful tool.

we've got an isdn 30 with 10 channels activated. I was under the impression if you got like 4*ISDN2e you ended up with different numbers - ie: if somebody rings 01234 567890 it would only route down one set of channels. We've got an LG GDK - might build an Astriesk solution eventually

nice??? Scotland?? *Hides*

We've got on OK with HP Laptops so far - we've bought all extended warranties. Thier not bad per say, and generally the backup has been preety good. Kyle

How long would it take for a supply teacher to demolish said PDA? The answer perhaps is for PARS to support USB Keys or a biometric option. Supply teacher comes in. Supply teacher swipes pad on desk. Supply teacher than able to log in to pars. Kyle

Given the price of disk now, i'd go for RAID 1+0 if you can Kyle

danit: a UTN would be the DfES Number. A unique person number (country wide) would be the NI number. Although name + dob is a one option, im not sure thats a good idea either - you *could* in theory have two people with the same DOB. The 3 letter coding would work - if you cant get hold of the NI Number or something. Kyle

PARS is preety good.

My work laptop is a hp nc6320 - 100g sata, 1gb ram. Assuming vista will run on it. We've several reasonably good desktops littered about too.
-
Raid 1+0 would make sense. Particulary as its not all that expensive any more.

When we did this, it was a case of manually exporting the timetable from Nova. Not great, but worked reasonably well.

For those of you that haven't seen Serco's email, there will be another upgrade in lateish April in time for the Summer Census. So, chaps, here we go again.

We've used Insight as our HP Partner in the past. We've asked European Electronique to do some cabling for us, so we'll try them too for laptops next time.

We've standardised (recentley) on HP laptops for staff. We've used Acer's in the past, which havent been too reliabile. We've got a few various IBM's, some Dell Latitudes, and a huge pile of broken Acer Travelmates. As for Thinkpad's, I expect the quality to drop as the prices fall under Levono. Kyle

Quite normal I'm afraid. Alot of companines do this and its quite fair if you think about it. Investing in people involves investing in the company too. Kyle

We always got on well with TASC's PARSql.
-
We appear to have bought into it and then never used it. It looks good from what i've seen, but we've never put it into production.

Have had eportal issues. Have recentley moved it to a seperate server to see what happens (we've now got facility+sql on one server, eportal on the other although we might move facility itself to one of the fileservers).
