If your original post said that you wanted to avoid making a "user", where as a "contact" is different - it's just an entry on your exchange server that knows it's an authorised contact. If for whatever reason you really don't want to have the governors listed as contacts in AD (and I can't think why not being that you can restrict message delivery etc), then just create an Outlook distribution list and copy it to the users whom you want to be able to access it?

In AD create a new contact with the email address being the external address you want the mail to go to. Once you have done that go back to your distribution list and add the AD contact.

I've had a similar request before. Honest opinion = ....tell them "no"! No matter how you technically achieve it, it will still cluter the desktop. There is also the potential for contact information to be seen by others (if it is on a staff wallpaper then pupils will see it on demo's etc?) A better option (or at least the one I went for) was putting a shortcut to a webpage on staff desktops taking them to the contact information. It's only a double-click away, protects their information and keeps the desktop looking clean.

Hi All, Having had a look around for something like this I think I might already know the answer - but do any of you know if there is such a thing as a "Sharepoint Image" that could be installed to a server or in to vmware to allow the Sharepoint site to work with a large amount of normal installation / admin work already done? I'm sure there are people reading this asking why -and the answer is basically, I'm ultra short on time, but know that Sharepoint is a wonderful bit of kit. Everytime I think about doing it I get as far as installing Sharepoint to a basic level and then getting stuck installing the extra modules using the command line stuff and making the site actually function properly (I'm possibly explaining that wrong - but if I am you kind of see my problem!) If not, is there a complete "idiots" guide to Sharepoint installation / administration that anyone has found useful in a similar position to mine?

If the user logging on has their profile removed (either via policy / delprof etc) then they will get the wizard each time.

If an admin sees this (or you PM one) they will be able to do it for you. I had mine done a while back

lol @little-miss - more alternative company recommendations in a CP thread! To balance it up a bit, although I've not actually bought anything yet, i've dealt with CP and NT via here and via email - never had a problem with either. As they're being mentioned in the same thread I'll go a step further - both of these companies seem to respect eachother pretty well - the fact they co-exist in a popular forum like this and (to my knowledge) haven't slagged eachother off at any point speaks volumes about their values. As for the OP, I think from looking at your last post you probably know you should have at least placed a phone call or PM on here first. I'm all for sharing negative experiences, but they have got to be strong valid reasons otherwise it just reads like a "bad day at the office" post.

What do the backup log files say the reason for it failing is? I really can't imagine that upgrading the RAM on the server will magically cure a failing backup. If the backup used to work (on your existing amount of RAM) it must be another factor - maybe hard drive space, windows / symantec updates, config changes etc?

Again, I could if I played around a bit (and figured our how to change the coding lol!) The beauty of the YouTube system means access to videos anywhere on that site, ability to upload our own without worrying about storage, and ability to give the username and password to key staff (Headteacher, Reception etc) to update the list without bothering me or any other techy person!

Technically I could but I'd like to investigate the cache possibility more, as it gives a decent amount of flexibility (mainly in terms of non-technical staff searching for content, adding to the playlist and having it picked up on screens etc)

That's kind of what I'm asking though... If Smoothwall was able to cache the videos from my YouTube playlist then the system could still work if / when the Internet became unavailable?

Hi All, I'm currently evaluating Smoothwall Network Guardian and have the filtering rules going well at the minute. I have another question that one of you might be able to help answer.... Is it possible to Cache YouTube videos using Smoothwall? I have a Samsung MagicNet LCD screen in reception which i've made a nice web kiosk for. Part of the screen is devoted to a YouTube playlist where various videos are played. It's all nice and professional looking until the video pauses at peak usage times. It would be ideal if Smoothie could cache the videos from the YouTube playlist so that it wouldn't have to have to stream them from the Internet another 50+ times per day etc - is that possible? We have had some issues - again seems to be limited to Exams. We've had general historical issues with printing in Exams and NovaT - to sort them in the past we've had to install printers via USB (so if they would normally have had an IP printer they've had to have it connected on USB as well/instead!) For info if it helps / interests anyone - we've had issues with Konica Minolta and Lexmark C532 printers.

I am in a similar role to the one you are describing but have the title "Head of ICT Services". At one point the position was going to be the "Director of ICT", but I didn't personally like it - felt far too dictorial and had the potential to make others confused / unhappy, so I managed to have it changed. My role is strategic and occasionally technical, but nothing to do with day to day teaching as such. The school has quite rightly (in my opinion) made a clear division between technical and teaching. We also have a more traditional Head of IT (Teaching) who does the co-ordination etc. Really internal relationships (between Heads / Directors of.. and Network Managers) shouldn't be a negative issue. It certainly isn't here. I was a Network Manager for a number of years, so know exactly what the job entails. I personally see the kind of role I'm in as being a link between key (and maybe more senior) staff and the technical team. When I was Network Manager a lot of my time was taken up by talking with members of our LT about various things, which meant I actually had less and less time to do "Network Management"! If a Network Manager has a non-teaching "Head of"/"Director of" above them, then it should be positive - they can get on with their role but also be safe in the knowledge they have someone above them to bounce ideas off. As for your question on titles - I prefer your title to be honest!

I would check that the user has read permission for the folder on the server which is being accessed as the redirected desktop. Also make sure that they have permission to the share itself. E.g. Redirection set as \\server1\desktop Share actually points on server to D:\shares\staff\desktop Make sure that the user has read permission to the "desktop" folder on D:, but also that they have share permssion on the share itself.

I can't say specifically about ISA, but I've had various ports opened with SWGfL. You'll have to fill in a change request form and state the reason you're looking to do this. If you mentioned you are looking to do in-house filtering they should provide you with an IP address which is on their "internal proxy" list which gives that IP access to a dedicated unfiltered feed. It's a question I've thought long and hard about previously. I agree with someone earlier on the coach driver job - would definately love to do that one day (not sure why, just always wanted to lol!). National Express or private tours would be cool! Apart from that, possibly do what I do now but in Europe - maybe France or Spain. I think anywhere where the Government don't steal so much from you while giving you so little back. (Sorry, I know that's not technically quiting IT, but it's quiting the bad aspect of IT + School + UK way of working!)

If it is just a blip and goes back down to normal within a few minutes I wouldn't worry too much (of course if it's in an area with non-regulated equipment I might worry more!), but if it becomes regular I'd be ringing your local electric provider.

That the power coming in to the unit from the mains supply is above the "normal" threshold. I'd guess above 245 or something?
