  1. we just got 10 dell vostro 3500 laptops, they look really good, feel sturdy and arnt very heavy, we have a 5 year service contract with them at no extra cost through our support company, there better than the 1520 we got last time and havent got the numlock glitch the 1510 and 1520 suffer from.
  2. I use a Mix of Pinnicle Studio v14 and ConvertXtoDVD, were getting serif at some point, not sure how good that is at making DVD's.
  3. im having problems with getting the printer to properly print duplex, its a manual duplex, it prints on the first side fine, but when i turn the sheet over and place it in tray 1 to get it to do the second side it comes out with a curved creased line in the paper, i fixed it for a little bit yesterday but its back and its worse. i cant see anything wrong with the inks or any of the rolers and ive taken it appart as much as i can during a free lesson. any ideas?
  4. We have 850 kids, less servers, we only have 5 and about 500 machines around the school (laptops and PC's), there are two of us at the moment, there getting rid of one of us at the start of summer, its buisy enough as it is, its going to be hecktick for whoever stays.
  5. it sets it so that they cant send or recive from the group you specify (students in our case), but any other internal groups (teachers, domain admins) or external emails can be e-mailed and e-mails can be recived from any other group or external e-mail address. hope that makes sense
  6. i just implemented this, with one slight change, change objUser.dlmemSubmitPerms to objUser.dLMemRejectPerms and it will then set the group you chose from beeing able to email each other, but will allow external email and email from other groups. hope that helps
  7. we dont blanket re-set the passwords, we had problems this year when we set a desently stong passowrd for the new year 7 students, all of our setup is all liked to AD/LDAP, makes life a lot easyer for us
  8. we had something similar with F-secure for exchange beeing a pain, tho it wouldnt let us see any websites at all, could be something similar.
  9. just wanted an opinion on how are they to use, thinking of trying to get one to carry around and install all the domain tools on it/use it to fix other problems/have op smartdesk always open(when i get round to ordering it) etc. i think id run skype or something similar on it so reception could get in contact with me anyhere in the building. are they any good?
  10. just sat back down, arived at 8:30 and have been on the go since then.
  11. everything is working now, btl has to change a lot of the settings and there was a fault when it synced overnight to boot blocking login access to local.
  12. what AP do you have, i had this problem a few months back when we got new access points that completely refused to do domain authentication.
  13. sorry, been chatting to our suport company about it, and having a look at what funds im getting for the next financial year and what needs doing with sead funds, id like to do this as i can see the benafits of not having any downtime, think this is something to look at in a year or so, two rooms need doing befor i can justify fully changing the way our servers are set up, will probably upgrade our servers to server 2008 r2 tho, our suport company is offering an upgrade for £45 per server.
  14. im starting to re-write our website internal and external, im writing it all in html with php for all of the menu and anything else i want it to do, ive started on a news section that will interact with a MYSQL backend and an admin page that will allow diferent sections of the school to see different things, also going to include most of the pages on MYSQL were i can so that i can change them from home without having to much problems.
  15. 60 teachers and some support staff, the reason we change was due to most of our laptops beeing run through a wifi system that wasnt up the the job when i started, we installed new ethernet cabeling to most classrooms and beefed up the wifi to be used with 100 kids laptops, we did the sims change at the same time, we had sims running through an isa fierwall over an 8mbs interent connection befor via our LEA, it was very slow, its a vast difference to what it is now. the staff use a lot more of sims now as it gets all they data they need really quikely and there happy, going to try and start linking sims in to our moodle soon so that it can handle assigning students to courses and setting up the course with the apropriate teacher to start with.
  16. we have the x:\ drive letter mapped to sims on our curriculum domain and the s:\ drive mapped to it on the admin domain, we have a NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS336G, connecting the sims server to the curriculum domain all with a 1gbs backbone connection, only allowing the ports required for the mssql database comunication, we change the connect.ini on all staff pc's and laptops to point to the sims server on the admin domain. works well for us all reporting is available and the speed has improved enormosly since we added the backbone link in. hope that helps at all.
  17. our setup using surfcontrol and ISA will let the translate the first page, the minute they move off it/try to log in to facebook it just gives them a white page, youtube gets our website restricted page
  18. we just got a handout from our support company saying that they would like to move over to virtual machines and server 2008 r2, ive never really used virtual servers befor, had a few basic virtual xp installs for testing but thats as far as it goes. we currently have 2x poweredge SC1430 (2 years old ish), 1x Poweredge T605 (just turnd 1 year) and 1x Poweredge 1600SC (very old) machines. anyone have good advice/pros cons about setting it up, they quoted between £6,000 and £15,000 depending on what we want to go with, with money back for buying our old stuff back. thanks Alun
  19. no luck, created a new website for a dedicated install of secureassess and set the port to 81, nothing else uses that port top my knowledge, the service still wont start and there now saying that they think its due to it not beeing able to talk with there central servers, all the outbound ports are open to the outside world that i could possibly think they would be using. any one have anything similar/use secureassesslocal/have had it set up?
  20. we had ranger installed when i started (similar sort of thing), paying about £500 a year i think, i stripped it out in the first 4 months and changed it all over to vbscripts and gpo objects, need to write a c++ app to replace one function it could do (application blocking by title bar words)
  21. I'm 24, been at this school since i finished my degree in november 2008 (Secondary school 900 kids ish), ive basically gutted and re-built the network since i started, i was made perminent on the fist of january this year, ill turn my hand to anything that remotely has anything to do with IT and Electronic, basically most things. we have 4 servers, one is a bit old and needs changing, 100 ish kids laptops all added after i started and abou 400 PC's, got a few rooms of pc's that are over 5 years old, slowly getting them changed to new ones, the login times for the old machines are about 10 mins new ones is less than 1 minute, big difference. I play alot at home, got a copy of Server 2003 installed and running at the moment, thinking of putting Server 2008 R2 on soon, were ment to be getting and upgrade at some point this year.
  22. Couple of days ago I decided to update our lanschool using our assigned GPO's, all looked fine, everything reported as if it had run fine, I then got a fault report from a teacher saying that the student machines were unresponsive, After investigating it turned out that lanschool had decided to default to channel 1 even though we'd set up the adm files for the correct channel. Were running v7.4.1.6, anyone else had this problem, think I’ve fixed it now, reapplying the ADM and a restart seamed to work. Just a bit annoying.
  23. one of the BTL engineers is going to try and fix this today, thinking it has to do with not having dedicated access to port 80, tho im still not sure as to why the service wont start, im almost sure thats the actual cause of the fault.
  24. had this here too, nothing i havnt been able to fix yet, we use F-Secure, it cant see them at all, just sits there beeing very dumb.
  25. i had something similar, turnd out to be a pice of scare ware that was trying to imbed itself in the system and mucking up the Proxy settings, it changed it to something like 127.0.0.1:(random port) if i remember so that the internet couldnt load, also displayed its own error in the web browser. not sure if your problems are similar, had it on a student laptop aswell, tho it couldent get a hold, removing his profile fixed that problem
