Neither agree or disagree. Just showing the guidance. It's a difficult one at the moment with the unknowns as to the best versions. Luckily for us one of our schools is still 7 enterprise and the other secondary and primary's are 8.1. We won't be changing to 10 anytime soon so hopefully all these questions and uncertainties get sorted by that point.... Here's hoping.

As you have said in time I'm sure those who have gone against the grain will be in a situation when something is realised on the Education SKU that cannot be used on the Enterprise or Enterprise LTSB SKUs. There has to be a specific reason for a separate Education SKU as its never been segregated before. What that reason is no one knows yet.... Will just have to wait and see I suppose.

Microsoft have made it clear that the Enterprise LTSB versions are for specific purposes, i.e laptops in tanks, emergency services i.e where updates are not an option etc etc. With Windows 10 Education and Enterprise you can be up to 2 major updates behind the current service branch before you are forced to update. Why they have even put LTSB on as an option on VLSC is not helpful if they don't want Education to use it.

Returning back to EN-GB and the tools are still installed............

RSAT has been released for En-US Language. Requirements state Pro or Enterprise but does work on Education. Obviously only if you change your language but its progress. Hopefully En-GB version is not to far away?? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45520

We are newly formed Multi Academy Trust. We have 5 in our central office 1x manager 1x 3rd line (me) 2x 2nd line 1x first line At our other secondary we also have 1 dedicated IT Engineer

Congrats on the promotion! It seems hit and miss with schools and their IT staff. My old school wouldn't invest at all in any training for IT staff, you learnt from what you screwed up and what you could get off technet and Edugeek. However my current school was a single academy and now a multi academy trust with IT centralised supporting 6 schools and training is there for when needed/requested. I've so far been on the 2 Microsoft SCCM courses and passed the certification and all 3 2012 courses for MCSA. My advice would be to look at training as stated above we do everything in house. It's cheaper in the long run even with the upfront expense of training. If you can set or use a training budget for IT staff it will be very well utilised!

Each to their own. I'll always use the windows 7 style start menu over anything new because I just prefer it same as I'll never grow to like to crappy live tiles or any metro apps. Personal preference I suppose.

Ah I like windows 10 a lot but I still prefer the Windows 7 style start menu. I hate all the crap metro style apps The now insist on installing especially the live tiles. In my opinion they have no place on an workplace device. Sorry mini rant...... So now my lovely windows 7 start menu is back

We have had a few snags with SWGFL and have escalated through the help desk. It's been discussed at management level at RM HQ and its actively being worked on and nearly fixed. We are a secondary supporting 5 other schools that are all SWGFL (our school isn't) we had a few problems with authorisation for us to carry out requests on other schools behaves but SWGFL sent requests to all schools who replied with confirmation and now we act for all our schools in our Multi Academy Trust. If you can get that sorted you can escalate yourself if your schools are willing to provide SWGFL/RM authorisation. As we are the central IT team for all schools and we don't use SWGFL I think they may have been worried we'd move all the schools to BT and away from them, thus I think that spurred them to act and escalate. It's a difficult political process but you can do it! Just be prepared to take a few steps forward and lots backwards whilst the politics are being sorted!!

Copy the folder first so you have a backup but yes overwrite the existing templates.

My only reservation with going LTSB is obviously not getting the new features/updates. They should of released an Education - without the crap modern apps version!

Just installing it on VM now. I like windows 10 but the apps infuriate me. They have no place on a enterprise/education machine. If LTSB is as cut down as it should be then my work laptop is being rebuilt. Why Microsoft insist on the stupid horrible apps is beyond me. They add no value and serve to be a real PITA! grrr Rant over!

Need to find away of being able to stop students being able to right click the start menu in Windows 8. They cannot use any of the features listed but would prefer the menu not to be shown. Cant seem to find a GPO setting to stop it though?? Anyone any ideas please? Yeah used that at old school. Going to look at it for both our secondaries but need to do this for our primaries and won't get that though soon enough!

A valid point, its always been easier to group and sort with year numbers..................... could look to change that.

That time of year again. I need to promote all students up a year to the correct OU in AD and move their docs and change their home folder paths. Usually Active User Manager (AUM) could do all this as the variables were all stored on the particular OU however, it doesn't seem to work in Server 2012R2 and the software is no longer developed. Anyone have any ideas? how do you do it? Our OU structure is like this School 1 >> Users >> Students >> Year1 School 1 >> Users >> Students >> Year 2 etc etc etc School 2 >> Users >> Students >> Year 1 School 2 >> Users >> Students >> Year 2 etc etc etc 4 schools in total. All years need to be promoted into the year's above OU. Each year has a homefolder path relating to that year so that needs promoting also and contents being moved to correct year's share. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

I think you are entitled to use either. But Microsoft would obviously prefer you to use Education.
