We had a lighning strike a few years back - killed a few CCTV cameras, half our Paxton Net 2 doors (they were all on a RS485 line), an FTTC modem (the black scorch mark on that was impressive) and a few other bits and pieces. Insurance covered it all. Realistically, you're not going to protect everything. Just have to cover the critical bits I think. Like all our central servers are behind UPS etc...

Vanilla is basically staying as is these days - no real point in wiping! Just update to new version, and if there's new features, everyone can go out and explore new chunks to experience them.

Yeah, that's the stuff. We have a group called "Teams Creators" that we add people to that are allowed to create them. Works well.

Are they Teams sites? Are users able to create Teams, or Groups? Those would both create sites I think?

The big difference between The Range and Wilko though is that Wilko is on the high street, and The Range is a "big box" out of town store. I suspect the "death of the high street" is one of the other factors affecting Wilko. Fewer shops on high streets, mean fewer "I'll just pop in and get" customers.

Twitter/X should be blocked in schools by default simply because of the inappropriate content on there (porn, violence, extremism). The added CSAM issue is another reason to keep it blocked. We have it unblocked for maybe 2 users at each of our schools - the person who updates the school Twitter/X account, and the head.

With Chromebooks, I've found repairs are mostly down to cannibalising other machines - have you looked on ebay for parts? Keyboards for Chromebooks are usually £20-£40 depending on model, ribbon cables £5-10 etc...

We're yet to do our clearout this summer. But, somehow we always manage to fill a van with WEEE stuff every summer. Where it all comes from, I have no idea. It just starts *appearing* in the office.

Was running a Dell T330 hosting VMs running HomeAssistant, PiHole and Plex. Now, running a Raspberry Pi 4 running the same things, with an external 5 bay USB HDD enclosure. More than halved my household energy usage. If I need anything else, I will either spin it up as a VPS online, or get another Raspberry Pi.

Projector in the library at this school is from 2001. Still working fine - it is only ever used for governors meetings to show powerpoints. Has its original lamp in, and has only done about 600 hours of use in that time.

The big issue with renaming domains is not the domain itself, but anything that is linked to it. E.g. if you run Config Manager, or onsite Exchange. Or any other tools that won't take kindly to the rename.

The last year has probably been the toughest of my career. Glad for the summer, will get a couple of weeks rest, but this will be the busiest summer we've had for about 5 years as well!

Hopefully I'll be able to make it to this one. Bit of a trek to the far north, but hopefully I'll be able to find the time!

When we became a MAT, we initially had Trust relationships between domains, but then decided to rebuild the entire thing from scratch, with the new Trust name. Much simpler to do than trying to rename and fiddle around with a bunch of school systems. It also allowed us to properly centralise services, and eliminate servers from all but 1 of our schools.

I have a discussion going on with our DPO about how long we need to maintain our old SIMS servers now we've migrated over to Bromcom. As our schools are primaries/middle schools, and aren't the final school for any child, the student record side of things goes up with them to their next school. However, certain aspects of the data held needs to be kept until their 25th birthday it seems - exclusion data, safeguarding etc... This leads us to the conclusion that we potentially need to keep these VMs around until 2044 potentially (looking at the dates). This, obviously, seems unreasonable. How have those of you who have migrated data handled this? What about those of you who had hosted SIMS and migrated away, how have you maintained that data?

I think this is where multi-level analysis like that done by some monitoring systems comes in. Eg. Classroom Cloud, a site itself can be flagged as low risk - eg BBC News, but then an individual page within it could flag up as higher risk due to the content of that page. It then takes into account whether the computer was being watched by the teacher at the time, and whether the user has been looking at a sequence of higher risk sites to give an overall score. That sort of multi-factor decision making is likely the best way forward, as it allows a much less crude way of filtering/monitoring. How you'd apply that to filtering is a different matter though!

If you use the default Paxton cards (the hitag2 ones, not Mifare as they are different), only Paxton readers will read the encrypted Paxton ID. If you use other readers, you get the non-encrypted ID of the card instead. There's no way round this that I've found.

There's no interface beyond the splash screen - it simply creates a folder called SetupRST_extracted in the same directory as the installer with the drivers inside it.
