  1. Hello all, Have a sever shutting down which has Windows 2019 installed. The issue is apparently with the operating system. HP replied with the following after assessing reports:- We have analysed the logs and see there are no hardware error. Looks like the issue is with the OS, please raise a ticket with the Windows Team. We found the below Windows Bug check error: 0x000000ef (0xffffad0a1afd9080, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 99486759-3171-41ff-b81f-8fd5b0a72553. What is the contact details for contacting Microsoft regarding such issues ? Thanks all.
  2. Thank you. The A records already exist. If I tracert to the server with the VPN on, it picks up the correct server and FQDN.
  3. Very good point. It pings to the VM by ip address but not the name. I believe there are extra configurations to do in order to connect by name, such as editing the LMhosts file on the client.
  4. Thanks for everyones replies so far. Thanks ill check on the servers where it isnt working the firewall. Take back earlier what I said about the one I got working. Its intermittent. Basically when I do a tracert it picks up a 192.168.0.1 address first off, other times intermittently, it connects and picks up the correct 10.110.x.x address and works. I have a funny feeling the ISP router at some of these premises maybe left on DHCP. An ISP guy replaced the router a while back at this particular premises. Won't know for definite until I am onsite. But the tracert shouldn't be picking up a 192.168.0.1 address to start with as the remote network is on 10.110.x.x
  5. Thanks for all the replies guys. Oddly got one of these hyperv vpn conenctions working, but not sure how !!! I checked with the firewall company and added in some extra vpn configurations inbound and outbound, and it worked. But on another server it hasn't, so my thinking is its not that. However, I noticed in the firewall settings of the server that now works as per screenshot, there is an app allowed for hyperv, however, this is not an app its a folder. This wasn't showing yesterday but today it is. To be honest, i'm not even sure how I got that in there as when you browse to the app through the firewall, it browses to a hyperv folder not a hyperv app, so it's not like I can select an app called hyperv, but I think this is helping the connection. On the server where it now doesn't RDP in via VPN, this hyperv app or should I say folder isn't showing.
  6. All servers at clients are schools and are on a local authority WAN. However, it's not an issue with flat build servers, its just the hyperv ones. The local authority no longer support these. The VPN is allowed through the firewall hardware not the server. Setup the same for all schools. Hence, RDPs to flat builds work, to the hyperv's do not, yet the VPN on the firewall is configured just the same i.e, to allow VPN access. The VPN client software connects it's just the RDP session where the issue occurs. RDP port is allowed on all firewalls. I've just got a hunch its a network issue for some reason. All switches onsite are Netgears with the latest firmware.
  7. Thank you. Yes the remote windows firewall allows for port 3389. The VPN connects fine to the local lan. Just the RDP and pinging doesn't. So the VPN is actually saying it can connect. Oddly, another thing. if I map a share WITHIN the premises to the local network and then go offsite. I can access the share remotely once the VPN is connected, but still cannot RDP. However, if I try to map the share when I am offsite, with the VPN connected (rather than create the share whilst onsite), the share will not map. It has to be created \ mapped first whilst onsite.
  8. Hello all, Have a virtual machine (Windows 2012 VM) on a Windows 2012 hyperv host. Have VPN software installed on Windows 10 and shows a connection. The remote VM has RDP enabled and the firewall equipment allows for port 3389. However, even though the VPN software shows connected to the remote site, when I then try to RDP to the server from outside the premises, it just doesn't connect. I can RDP from within the premises, but not outside. It only occurs on servers with a hyperv host. Flat physical build servers with no hyperv host work fine. I can't ping the VM when the VPN is connected remotely, but can ping VMs if they are on flat build physical servers. Any thoughts much appreciated
  9. Hi all, How do you install the Tucasi Schools Cash Office client installation on a client system ? It is installed on the server at the moment. Thank you
  10. Hi all, Have setup a shared mailbox with O365 and added the appropriate users in order to add appointments to a shared calendar. However, some of the users need full access to add and delete appointments and others only require view access. It looks like on a shared mailbox, administering different permissions to a user is not available. I can see you can customise permissions which says "Read and Manage" or "Send as" but that is it. Is there a way to add permissions to a user within the shared mailbox ? I gather it has to be done via powershell but doing it this way, how does it work, does it allow the O365 admin to see the permissions in O365 for each user or do the permissions have to be applied to each user via powershell ? Alternatively, if there is a better way anyone can think of I appreciate it. Thanks all
  11. Hi Guys & Gals, I just wondered if anyone out there provides I.T. Support for educational institutions. We do as well mainly primary schools. These schools in terms of educational hardware mainly use laptops and ipads. But would like to know what else others are using that provide educational development for these schools to keep them moving forward and up to date in terms of both hardware and software. Also, would be interested to hear if anyone feels they they can work in conjunction with schools (not support services) but in terms of providing lessons or teaching of I.T. resources. PM me if need be. Thanks all
  12. I installed Windows 10 Education and Smart Notebook 11.4 onto a laptop and it worked fine connecting to an older Smart Notebook board, but it was an 800 series board where the Windows 10 Education has the issue not picking up the USB connection.
  13. Hi, Do you mean free Smart Notebook 19 as in the trial version ? Cheers.
  14. Thanks for all these great replies. I did try drivers version 12.xxx of the Smart Notebook at the time but still didn't work on Windows 10 Pro Education. But I will try some of the other solutions posted in the replies as well as the alternative to Smart Notebook.
  15. Hi all, Had a laptop with Windows 7 using Smart Notebook. Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro Education and now Smart Notebook is no longer interactive. Have another laptop with Windows 10 Pro and works fine !!! Using version 11.4 of Smart Notebook, but it works fine on Windows 10 Pro and even Windows 10 2015 LTSB. The error is the USB as per screenshot below. Have tried updating but to no avail. Have searched Google but no help. Any feedback very much appreciated.
  16. Hi all, We have many laptops where some users are on Windows 10 LTSB 2016 and Windows Education. We noticed that Windows 10 LTSB 2016 will not download feature updates 19xx as apparently the OS is too old. My question is, do these laptops now need upgrading ? My second question is ? Does this mean that every 2-3 years Windows 10 needs upgrading ? Thanks all
  17. Thanks for the reply. I finally got it working. It was outbound firewall ports. Originally the ports provided via the Ubiquiti website were in fact outdated. Here is the response from Ubiquiti:- "Port 8081 is needed for device communication to the controller, port 8443 is needed for access to the user interface. The port for STUN is 33301 instead of 3478. We have recently made some changes to our controllers so the ports have been adjusted dependent on the controller, so not all controllers run on port 8080 for inform/device communication - I'll look to get this adjusted so I have unpublished the article for now. All the other ports mentioned are optional but remain the original port numbers for your controller."
  18. Hi all, Connected 3 Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PROs at some premises. They are setup via Ubiquiti's cloud solution:- https://unifi.ubnt.com/ The APs turn blue as they should and pick up an ip address when scanning the nework. But they are not seen within the above portal and there is no connection from laptops at all. Ubiquiti themselves have setup the security key for these in line with the clients existing wireless which will be removed. On the premises is a Smoothwall firewall. I wondered if this was blocking connectivity. Any recommendations really appreciated. Thanks all
  19. It's a good point, probably puts many off because they make the systems slower. - - - Updated - - - Yes I have used that fix. I like your slogan "If you think hiring a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur!" - cool.
  20. Looking at the list of Windows builds and versions https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht502786 Any laptops on version 1507 build 10240, can these only be upgraded to version 1909 build 18363 by installing the latest OS over the top ? I'm concerned any laptops on LTSB 2015 are not secure.
  21. Hi Guys, Out of curiosity if need be, what are the costs for extending Windows 7 updates beyond January 2020 ? It's only for a few machines, but it's down to time. The machines are running Windows 7 Professional. How does one go about extending and purchasing the updates if need be ? Thanks all for your help.
  22. Thanks guys for all the very useful replies here. Appreciate it.
  23. I experienced this last year with Smoothwall. Their support was and still is pathetic. After hearing so much hype from people I know that Smoothwall is the way to go, I had a nightmare with them. I had several installations of Smoothwall last year, had different engineers I was in contact with over the phone, one saying this should be set up like this and another that should be setup like that. When I desperately needed assistance after the installations and customers were in a complete mess with them, their help was diabolical. Didn't want to know. Still finding over a year on not much has changed. They put us through so much stress and aggravation we nearly lost customers because of them. It was a horrid time. We won't be renewing with them once the contract expires. Glad I have noticed some of the comments on Edugeek, as at first I thought it was just our lack of understanding and knowledge, but realise now many others have and are still having similar experiences. Once you buy into their contracts they don't want to know.
  24. Hi everyone, Just a quick (or few) points regarding Windows 10. We are a very small couple who look after a few schools. For Windows 10 they use either Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB or Windows 10 Education. Haven't tried Windows LTSC at all. Just wondered on your thoughts ? Also, I assume that with these versions (or any versions of Windows 10) Windows update automatically updates the versions through to the latest update version 1903 ? These schools don't use WSUS to update client machines. Each machine simply has automatic updates set up on them. I just want to be careful that machines don't miss updates, but see no reason why they should with Windows 10. Finally, I recall reading somewhere i'm sure, that Windows 10 versions will need upgrading after a few years to the latest builds. Sorry, there are that many versions of Windows 10 and builds etc it's a bit confusing to keep track of. Thanks
