It won't have ssh enabled - you enable that from the web interface - Is your VM on the correct VMware VSwitch - if you type ifconfig you should get its IP and then access that from a browser. it will also allow user logins.

Password - then go to the web interface set the domain up and the destination and choose the RBLS to lookup agaisnt and point mail to it,

If you open Management studio go to properties of the database and see what the recovery is set to, set this to simple and then run a backup.

Yup ISA will not cut it at any grade. Never really used bloxx apart from the demo but Smoothwall does real time scanning and actually looks into the webpages for content rather then just relying on blocklists which nowadays will not cut the mustard in education.

Ah ok - well I would just create a new VM with MailCleaner. I run mine on as said above 1.5gb ram 60gb drive - choose the ISO to install from and away you go. saves you a windows license! Total install time is about 20 mins.

The host running windows? Or the VM? What platform does your VM's sit on? ESXI/Xen/Hyper-V? The ISO downloadable come pre-packaged. Create a new VM using the ISO as install media. it installs everything and during setup asks for IP, Name, Password. Then access the web interface to do everything else.

you can install it on a VM yes - mine does fine.

for mailcleaner you don't need to be able to use linux - its all done through a nice web interface just the underneath runs linux - during setup you give it an IP and a name.

This prebuilt Mailcleaner one runs on linux (debian) - and is the one I use start [Mailcleaner] I setup mine for 60 domains to multiple addresses in about an hour after install. EDIT: I have assigned it 60gb disk and 1.5gb ram and runs happily. it is also based on the same as MailScanner.

Cybernerd used Google Apps for Everything. Another vote for Mail Scanner here I use the community edition as a service platform its very good and can be clustered easily.

That can be true - all depends on the hardware. Also if you have customised it (i.e added loads more ram) they might not also be covered. But if you have fault tolerance in your VM environment the affects of a single host dying can be mitigated.

Yes it happens a lot. The critical part is convincing SLT that its not good practice. Make submitting jobs to IT support easy and then get SLT behind a drive to say if its not there its not known tough luck. Once you have SLT on your side you can easily show that all tickets that are submitted are processed with X amount of time. The reason these ones took longer then normal was because of X.

Personally I would just purchase an extended warranty if it is possible. Most Servers from the likes of HP/Dell will easily last 5/6 years as long as they are still fit for purpose (as in they still are able to perform the job). Although I have one client that has a 3 host cluster and is happy to loose one for 24/48 hours as there is sufficient capacity on the other two hosts to be able to run everything (runs VMware with HA).

Ok you can either make a basic .htaccess file which limits the access to the website via IP address - or username, then just give everyone that needs access to it static addresses. Limit certain ip to access website with .htaccess - Techie Corner
