We have a Vistron 32" HD LCD we got from ebuyer for £300. That is sufficiently large for our lounge, and the xbox 360 looks great on it - as does sky. We also have a desktop hooked up to the PC - and that is one of the best things, however the flash iPlayer doesn't look that great. The only problem with the Vistron is that there are no sky remote codes for it, so we have to use the TV remote for adjusting volume etc.

That's a photo from when it snowed a couple of weeks ago - the roads weren't that clear today - but they were getting there. The only reason our road is clear is because it's a bus route, so gets gritted. At 2am the snow had covered the road completely (despite it being gritted).

We have about 2 inches of snow here in Dundee, which in Bedfordshire would close the schools due to buses not running. Despite the roads being covered with snow (despite the grit) earlier, the buses are running as usual, and it looks like nobody really cares. I'm now just waiting for the pavement snow plough to go past.

Sounds like an interesting course. I would however recommend you have a bullet proof AUP before you start, as well as make students aware (and sign to agree) that if they are caught doing anything illegal they will be subject to disciplinary action, and I'd suggest immediate removal from any hacking portions. When I started the course I'm on at the moment (ethical hacking & countermeasures at Abertay) we had to agree to that, and not being allowed to learn any more is a good deterrent!

Apparently the best way to get to Swansea from Crewe is to catch a train to Runcorn, and then one back to where you started before catching the right train, to Swansea! I'm at a loss as to how the system could conclude that was a good route!

I'm not aware of such an option, however the last server I got to play with properly was Server 2000. Could you use a modified GINA dll to remove that drop down box (or at least disable it)?

We had [email protected], which typically doesn't give enough to be able to work out a full name, as SMIJOH isn't immediately identifiable with John Smith. Staff accounts were in the format JSmith@ to make them more easily identifiable.

Doesn't OWA prefer SSL? If so, and you're not using SSL on Apache, just force SSL for the directory, and make all shortcuts point to https://www.mysite.com/ There's free certificates and threads on where to get them. Edit: Beaten to it! I agree with Edu-IT.

Most people have a job coping with anything being out of order - over the summer I worked in Tesco, and people would try to scan their shopping through a self service till which was crashed, off, or booting, and had a laminated notice saying "This facility is temporarily out of order" in big letters attached to the screen. So whatever happens, some idiot will still try to use it!

It seems the OEM pre-installed copies of Vista won't validate over the internet. I think it will be a case of phoning MS - but you should be able to do it with the automated service, which is still a pain. I had to activate Vista on my laptop following a reinstall and it refused to activate online, but the automated phone thing went through fine!

I ran a web server with Tiscali - I think it's still going at my parent's house. When we were with BT they used to probe my SMTP server to see if it was usable as a relay for spam. You can also do it with Freedom2Surf - and they give static IPs which is a bonus. It was quite useful for connecting to my uTorrent machine to check my Linux distributions were downloading, and to add new ones to download.

How about FAQs (if not already in the helpdesk) and perhaps a facility to find where varying key software is installed (such as Web Design tools in 1516 or similar) and where the colour printers and other such devices are.

Somebody would try to pour it into the printer!

For those who may be filtered: Due to the new copyright legislation that are going to take effect from today we had to move all of the system outside of Europe. We decided to move to the desert of Sinai in Egypt since we feel that we'll be safe there. Tiamo has already got himself a permanent place to live and will reside in Sinai from now. Those of you who need to get in contact with him can use the contact page. In Sinai we've set up the systems with three redundant fibre links. Besides local connectivity in Egypt we also have connectivity to Saudi-Arabia and Israel. Jordan is quite close and we hope to install a link there as well as soon as our budget will reach that level. This way we're actually hosted in Asia as well as Africa. More updates on this will come later today, hopefully. Everything will be the same as before, we will have slightly higher latency for European and American visitors. A special note to Ifpi: Moses walked in the desert of Sinai for 40 years. Our servers will be active for at least another 40 as well.

An undocumented feature of Google which E2BN use on their web filters is "Very Safe Search" - I believe the querystring for that is &safe=vss - apparently that works pretty well on image searches.

It's windy and rainy here - uni is still open. I must say I found the BBC reporters on location quite entertaining - glad I'm up early now - not every day you get to see people trying to give a serious report while trying not to blow away!

I'm quite glad it's not my computer now! I hadn't spotted that. He is also doing hacking though - so the hacking folder is OK - I'll have to talk to him about the warez (or at least storing them on the desktop)! It looks like the deleting the USB Host Controllers has finally worked.

The MS tool doesn't do anything to help - with the tool open, the balloon saying the device cannot be recognized still pops up. And deleting the USB Host controllers and rebooting didn't help either.

Or just disable all the buttons on the ctrl-alt-del menu via the registry, there's a registry key somewhere which prevents you from closing IE, and then disable task manager as well - and then none of the keyboard shortcuts will work. I know that's how Halifax secure the internet banking terminals they have in some of the branches. They also set the shell to be IE running in kiosk mode, so there's no explorer to allow you to get round the system.

A mate of mine is currently experiencing issues when plugging in USB storage devices, such as his pen drive (a SanDisk Cruzer Micro), and his MP3 player (a Sony NW A-808). He's tried them in both the front and rear USB ports, as well as into the ports on a PCI card he has (to eliminate the motherboard USB controller) - all with the same problem. His USB mouse, keyboard and webcam all work fine, and rebooting worked a few times, but doesn't seem to work now. Plugging the devices into other people's computers works fine. We've checked the registry and file permissions for the restrictions preventing the addition of USB storage devices, and they're enabled. The devices appear to work until the Windows Kernel kicks in, when the keyboard lights refresh - then the pen drive light goes off, and the MP3 player stops reporting being connected.

When I moved in here I had a dialtone, with the "number not recognised" message no matter what I dialled (even 150!). I had to the £125 pay for a BT engineer to come out in the end, and it took a month for one to come out, as the guy didn't show on the first time, so I ended up at the back of the queue again, with another 2 week wait. I have no idea what the BT engineer did, as I was in a lecture at the time so the caretaker let him in. If Virgin Media did here, I would have gone with them, as I only wanted internet, but they do all the roads apart from my one!
