We are considering using windows 8 on kids netbooks because it seems to run slightly better than our currently installed windows vista. We would like to keep a theme that the children can recognise and use easily but obviously windows 8 has metro. I would like to know if using ex7forW8 breaks and eulas / is illegal in any way. We can have win 7 pro or win 8 pro on our machines but due to boot speed im pointing towards 8. Does anyone see issues with this software ? The reason I ask is because it requires the windows 7 disk to work in the first place and i think its modifying system files. Any Advise Thanks Squeeky

Im still slightly concerned about this laptops CPU. If anyone can tell me, even if its not this exact laptop how the AMD A4-4300 performs that would be great I cant find anything much in the way of performance tests. I cant even find a youtube video of someone using a lapatop with this processor it.

Hi, Has anyone used the HP ProBook 4545s in a school enviroment ? They are pretty cheap and good looking laptops. I passed on some samsung ones because of the lack of usb ports (only 2) and because they are so close together. I am slightly concerned about the A4 processor thats onboard. Oh also the windows 8 doesnt bother me because i can downgrade. I need a product that is strong robust and is quite powerfull for teacher use. If your running xp and you have a large sum I suggest starting to think about new hardware and software in terms of laptops, tablets and desktops also looking at your projectors etc

Hi, Ive writen a batch script that will mount a network drive and then backup to that server. Can anyone tell me if im missing important switches ? net use /D x: net use \\IPADDRESSHERE\SHARENAME /USER:BACKUP PASSWORDHERE wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\backup-pc\win2k8r2 -include:c:,d: -quiet Because the server is not connected to the domain this script mounts with the correct credentials so that they are cached for the backup to run. Otherwise i get a user name and password error. I have found two other switchs but have no idea what they do and documentation is pretty limited. -allCritical -vssFull Any ideas ? Just to be clear I want a full backup even if i overwrites the old one (I have another plan for this but want to make sure backups work correctly first) Thanks Squeeky

Hi, Im tearing a pc apart to upgrade and re-utilise but I was hoping someone could answer this question. It has a D915GVWB moterboard inside it and 4 Sata ports. However I cant find any referance to what sata type they are. I was hoping that they might be sata2 but it seems doubtful. This pc will be doing alot of data moving so it needs to have reasonably fast hard disks. Is there any way to tell because bios wouldnt tell me either. Thanks Squeeky

2gb - The first 45% of the bar completed in roughly 30 seconds and the last half took 21:13

yeh but what im saying is that it says 24 hours for a 8gb file ! where as if i copy to the other server it says 2 mins

I have moved the server to the same cab as the ones which I am backing up and the problems still persist It is now direcltly connected to the same switch as the servers that I am copying from using cat6. Its an 8gb rar file and it starts copying at 40mb/s and slowly drops over the time of the transfer. I think this is because the transfer speed is averaged over the time of the transfer ?

Im having a few issues with my backups here but i cant quite put my finger on it. I have just tested copying an 8GB file across the network. This is what happens on both servers in terms of network utilisation. Can anyone tell me if this is normal ?

Hi, its a quick question that someone might know the answer to. Where is the option in Active directory to allow a user to use folder sync in 2008r2 with a vista client ? I have not been able to find it and currently get the message that you do note have administrator permissions etc. Also is there a way to set syncronisation on a specific drive for all users from active directory so that it cant be fiddled with ? Well all staff will be assigned an individial laptop to use at school or at home. I would have a few spare for subs etc and their is a planning drive where teachers store planning work.

All of the above confirms exactly what i thought so thats brilliant. I just had to ask the question. Yes I was thinking of trucrypt and then disabling sleep mode. I am however going to have to allow people to access the internet options in IE because people want to use internet at home. Either that or I just install another browser for home use.

Hi, I need a little advise on if this will work or not. I am thinking of removing the domain aspects of our system for curriculum and using alternative software. This would allow us to use cheaper versions of windows and also remove a aspect that does not really work 100% for children in a Primary School. This is an initial idea at the moement but I have been considering making all laptops encrypted with an entry level password to start the machine up. I was then thinking of making the laptops auto-login so that nobody needs another password. (this could still be done with a laptop connected to the domain to allow me to set permissions etc) I was then thinking of making windows backup run automatically for each laptop during a time of day when the laptops will not be in use and then backing up to one masive NAS or using Sync back to the server. I could use WPKG to manage software. What does everyone think about this scenario ? Is it more trouble than its worth ? This idea has come about because teachers would like to take laptops offsite and I am worried about data security. Any thoughts are welcomed
