  1. you can get S-Video to SCART adapters and alot of newer TVs have S-Video inputs. As for VGA you would need a TV with VGA in, or a VCR/DVDR with VGA in and SCART out.
  2. They don't allow a 2nd connection to stop them from having any ill effects from any security problems at your end and also the whole filtering thing. If it clicks over to the backup connection and the kids can then access pr0n they wouldn't want to be held responsible. At least that's what I was told.
  3. USB access will be required for students to take work home I assume since noone uses floppies any more. Students playing games in the lesson isn't of any consequence to the IT team and the security of the network - if teachers don't want them playing them they can stop them. If you are using mandatory profiles and have a correctly locked down network with a good virus checker on the storage server, anything brought in on USB should have no affect on the rest of the network.
  4. my job here is done *dusts hands*
  5. you're a girl in IT? Be careful admitting that near Jake otherwise we'll have to lock him in his cage again.
  6. long arduous task ahead, but one I've gone through. Go to each machine, set a BIOS password and set the boot order to ONLY boot from the local hard drive (and PXE if you use it) allow no other boot devices. Open the case and unplug teh CD drive's power and IDE cables. Also fit cable ties to the rear of the case through the lock eye most cases have to stop them from just unscrewing the case and opening it to plug in cd drive/reset BIOS/swap HDD. Set up a proxy server that blocks everything but port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) - the smoothwall guys view the forum so they can help there. IPCop, Smoothwall, pfSence, any of these dedicated proxy OSs will be great here. That's the basic stuff, now you have to secure your domain. Set the folder shares - even the shared ones - to deny non authenticated users. I would hope it already is but just covering all grounds. Group Policy time. Lock this down to the maximum you can get away with. Manditory Remote Profiles would be a must for me, and blocking out access to CMD, right click menus and lots of other stuff, you can fill a whole book on all of the GP options, but ultimately it's down to you what works best.
  7. different link, same story but with pictures that make me agree that they should be wearing full length skirts 100 pupils walk out of high school in protest at short skirt ban | Mail Online
  8. On PayG the data costs are going to be MASSIVE. I'd get the phone that way if you must, and then get a SIMonly contract with as much data transfer as possible.
  9. Silly question, but why can't you hook the laptops up to a keyboard, mouse, monitor and network cable, remove the batteries and leave them plugged in? Or are they too old? There are lots of grants out there and you could always sell your schools soul for money and have a wall sized advert for the company donating the money/equipment. Could you speak to some of the local 2ndaries and see if theyre going to be upgrading their kit meaning you can take the old off their hands?
  10. Bridgend College do a good term time once a week evening CCNA course. Highly reccomended and the teacher is a great guy. Otherwise there isn't much about, esp for MS due to most placing training up for the new MS quals.
  11. only if he never wants to recover his files if it fails
  12. but he doesn't need a full OS, just storage controller
  13. managing VNC could be done by assigning different ports for different machines on the router as for storage, FreeNAS would do the job nicely and has a webGUI FreeNAS: The Free NAS Server - Home how to set up FTP: Setting Up FTP Access in FreeNAS

    Best OS

I used [OpenSolaris] for about a month before I gave up on it oh and YAST is rubbish, SLES is the worst distro i have ever used.

    Best OS

I say windows 7 *uses debian server and mint desktop to hide from flying eggs.* incidently I have a DAMP. Dragonfly BSD Apache MySQL PHP server. Seriously not recommended unless you like being frustrated during config. At least it's secure.
  16. iPhones are useless with exchange since they new firmware update. Get a cheap wifi windows mobile PDA if you only need wifi
  17. but TrueCrypt works with MacOSX, there is even a free download here. or am I missing something?
  18. it's £1.03/litre for diesel around here now.
  19. most likely they already had someone lined up for the job and were just following procedures so they can cover themselves
  20. hmm thats very odd, can you access the RAID card setup prog? (you should see the option before the OS loads) Go into that and check the logs and do a full test. It might be the card alone that has failed. You shouldn't get a firmware fault on all of the HDDs at once unless you are the unluckiest man on earth or the whole batch of discs is a write off. Any power surges lately?
  21. total fail or just 1 disc? i'd do a complete backup and go demand an entire new set of discs since from experiance if you get one dodgy disc in a batch there is a chance there might be more. That's just the better safe than sorry approach.
  22. If the application form has those questions on them, you wouldn't want to work for that company. Seriously, who besides people who have no idea what they are doing still asks for strengths and weaknesses.
  23. well thats very swish looking although i do wonder what Adam Internet has to do with edugeek I like the anotate feature too, that was a good idea
  24. I found it very difficult getting out of the school due to the attitude of all of the recruiters I came across and ended up taking a paycut and going into data recovery, after a year of doing that I had more success getting another job. Although people still won't believe how many machines I was supporting and just assume schools haven't changed in 10years and still have a max of 30 machines for the whole school. I do wonder how i would have faired if I didn't say school and just said that I wouldn't state my current employer's name for job security reasons.
  25. Sounds like the perfect excuse for automated trains then doesn't it. stop in the same place every time. Although you would think that if they were qualified enough to be earning £40kpa that they'd be able to stop in the same place every time within a margin of a few inches.
