so it isn't RAID then, it's a JBOD
-
depends how you want to do it, its fully flexible, i just say RAID5 due to the redundency it offers and having just one location increases the simplicity of a script for backing up.

Get a cheap motherboard with onboard SATA-RAID controller or buy a PCI one for £30 and put on a spare PC, but try to get one with a Gigabit NIC Stick 4 500GB HDDs in it (~£60ea) Set Them to RAID5 in the controller's access control (accessed when booting the PC and after POST). Install FreeNAS You have yourself a cheap 1.5TB NAS that will survive a disc failure; as long as you keep an eye on it and don't let 2 disks fail - happens more often that you'd expect.

With all their suggestions of lack of suport for linux from outside companies, are they suggesting they are going to be sending you down the BSF route? I used linux because it was much more stable than my windows 200x servers (used Smoothwall for proxy, and Debian for storage and web hosting) they never needed restarting and they were free. Now they're Moodle argument is confusing as alot of LEAs and schools have gone down that route and there is alot of support for it, what are they suggesting that you use otherwise? Or are they one of these people that think that since it is free there must be something wrong with it, and the only way to get best quality is to go with the option that costs the most?

I was showing my amazement at spending that much money on a frigging astra, and then suggested getting the much better model at 1yo which'd still have 2years warrenty and cost alot less as they have terrible depreciation. Good luck with the new car, you made the right choice not getting the 1.4
-
Jesus £14k on an astra? I'm looking at spending that on a 3yo 5.7L Monaro. Get the bigger engine, you will very quickly tire of being tailgated onto the motorway up sliproads by people with cars that can actually do 70mph I started with a 1.5L Diesel 106 (around the same power as the 1.1L) and moved onto a 2.2L Pug Coupe and still want more power for quicker, safer overtakes. I couldn't imagine how scared I'd feel trying to overtake whilst in a 1.4L Barge like the Astra. If you really MUST get an astra (there are much better cars out there) get a 2nd hand 2L Turbo SRi (2006 for ~£10-11k).

pffft. Do you have a backdoor to ssh in and reset the ban?

kearton> You can get an old Vauxhall Senator Or Omega quite cheap and were based on the Holden VN Commodore. 24-valve 3.0L V6 204bhp http://www.carsurvey.org/images/vauxhall_senator_1.jpg http://www.verdictoncars.com/cars/300/vauxhall/uc_omega.jpg Or if you have some money and want a 4door monaro, how about a HSV GTS-R? http://pistonheads.com/sales/140835.htm http://www.histomobile.com/histomob/internet/115/282801.jpg

On that note, do any of you keep offsite backups?
-
I was expecting there to be a php script showing a new message from the BOFH message of the day on every refresh.
-
Log in script which will check computer name and if it's a MS computer, mount //MediaServer/StudentName$ you may want to even re-route MyDocs and hide/unmount their usual userspace. Depends how you arrange your profiles

They didn't have a camera to record it for You've Been Framed I take it then?

when you're drunk you dont have to worry about things like rain. as long as there is a hood over the BBQ you are "sorted" as I am informed the kids would say
-
GD> that's why i replied as such, i use linux, but in an educational environment windows is much better.
-
if it's sunny, garden + beer + bbq = fat filled drunken fun
-
install linux or bsd and throw a teacher at it and then you'll see which is better. actually in no case is windows worse than linux/bsd its easy to install via network, the teachers can use it, it's pretty easy to administrate compare that to linux.
-
uhhh.... how about going to the pub and getting others to get you drunk?
-
teach about computers at comp, primary should just be to give the kids a good foundation in reading and writing and maths, something that alot of kids miss these days. How does teaching a <10yo kid how to write a letter in MSWord help their developement? anyway, this is a different topic. back on track.... has anyone mentioned Nelson Thornes yet?
-
bloody hell, they've ruined primary education. I don't think there should be such an emphasis on computers at primary level. A handful of computers for the head and staff to put details on and print worksheets and thats about it and concentrate on actually putting down a foundation for their learning. Have they started teaching citizenship and how not to treat a person from another race? and i'm going to stop there before I start sounding like the Daily Mail.
-
Obviously primary education has advanced far beyond what I experianced at that age. Our curriculum was rather more adhoc and mainly consisted of "open book to page XX and do the questions" after they had finished teaching us how to answer those questions. Do they now have to plan playing in the sand pit down to the last grain?
-
That's a very good point, but unfortunately without knowledge in the field the software is for (or at least the curriculum), it would be difficult to know whether the software is substantial.
