  1. I have that EXACT set up.... actually i lie i have an E6700 but anyway have you tried any other boot CDs? Get Hiren's Boot CD and try the miniWin98 from that. what are you trying to boot? is it a shady copy of windows? have you tried linux? are you remembering to hit the any key when it says to?
  2. We once had an old pupil turn up and sit through a whole lesson without anyone raising any questions (he was there to see his young gf)
  3. Its something that should be taught to all PATers. Confused the hell out of me when a pile of my printers and print servers all died over the hols.
  4. also remember. DO NOT FLASH TEST COMPUTER EQUIPTMENT.
  5. oh! [/sopranos]
  6. I base my suggestions on the HDDs that we get fewest of and are easiest to recover from. We get LOTS of WD drives and they usually have failed heads, or problems with the firmware or GLists. Either way there is a low success rate of recovery from them compared to other manufacturers. We get very few seagates, and the ones we DO get are usually just PCB failures. Not so sure about the larger samsung drives, but the lower capacity ones are piss easy to recover and replace heads in and we don't get many of them (although that may be because they aren't as popular) and I rate Toshiba because they are very quiet, and have a very high success rate. DO NOT get seagate momentus laptop HDDs though, they are rubbish. If any of you have a macbook/powerbook made in the last 2 years, they'll have these drive. Make sure you have everything backed up regularily or just throw away the drive and get a new one as they are failing alot due to Apple buying a bulk load of terrible quality chinese made units that usually gain platter damage.
  7. In my place we have a bulk load done every few months and we just use a drill to make a hole through the lid and platters into the chassis. Desktop HDDs just gain a hole, but laptop HDDs shatter. Not a lot of fun after a while so its given to the newest starters.
  8. Speaking as a data recovery engineer I would never EVER suggest WD. Desktop: Seagate (although the new ones aren't as good/quiet as old) or Samsung Laptop: Toshiba BTW: maxtor are owned by seagate, Hitachi are now IBM not a separate company, and phillips don't actually make HDDs themselves.
  9. Hilariously I was thinking this after seeing the title "Site u mite want to look at" and saw this thread directly below it in my unread list. I hate l33t and txtspk and it just makes me ignore what the person has to say. How much harder is it to type "you" instead of "u" and "might" instead of "mite" I can understand it to an extent on other forums, but this is a forum for people in Education. How can the kids be expected to do things correctly if their superiors can't write in proper english.
  10. i'm sorry but why are they even considering laptops for video editing? We had a 3GHz PentiumD on a boggo intel mobo with 1GB of RAM which worked fine (bit slow loading up all the vid segments in movie maker mind) but for the actual editiing it was fine.
  11. tech_guy> how about a 40-50" LCD TV showing random stuff in reception. You could put a camera on the wall behind the TV and have that hooked up to the TV so that it acts like a one way window.
  12. if you DO fart. Turn on the radio.
  13. lovell> we get quite a lot of those, on the whole the easiest way to fix is to swap the 40pin memory chip off the board onto an identical one.
  14. You CAN recover from RAID from a RAID5 with >2 failed disks. I should know I do it at least 2 times a week, I could give you our price range if you are really interested. oh and easy recovery WILL charge you well above that "£699.99" special offer.
  15. I only fix my family's machines and my neighbours because he's a nice guy, him and his sons do favours for me (driving instructor, mechanic, electrician) and he buys me a pint and chucks me a couple of quid if it takes any large amount of time, but everyone can go swivel
  16. will MS create a version of office for linux (without just using crossover) ? *welds wings to a pig in antisipation*
  17. I think you have to blackmail the the HT with some photos and kneecap one of the SMT
  18. huzzar. Thanks for reminding me
  19. i had the firewall translate the outside port to the internal port, also connect to the main server and then use TS on that server to connect to the rest.
  20. openoffice portable is free and easy to get
  21. What's On Your Stick? Chicken I have file erasers and recovery tools, my email, and USB bootable version of Hiren's boot CD
  22. pinemarten> you'd be supprised how often we get that in data recovery. paintings, polaroids, digicams, ALL get used for nudie pics. I bet the first thing the inventor of the digicam did was go take naked pics of his wife.
  23. it is strange how they winge about how their £30k+ wage is too low, and then in the same breath say that £18k and no holidays is good pay for the Person who keeps all the computers running.
  24. why would you need morethan 8gb ona phone? i have 512mb in my phone andits nowhere near full.
