Had an emailed press release forwarded from my head, "Bristol gains another "first" as Northgate launches unique managed learning platform Northgate Education, a leading UK provider of ICT managed services and solutions to the education sector, today launches its innovative, all-inclusive managed learning environment in Bristol, as Gordon Brown and Ed Balls attend an event to celebrate the opening of the first new school to be completed under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme." Does anyone in the area know which this MLE is? Is it something new or an established MLE? I thought they were in partnership with Fronter.

I suggest you get a policy in place so that members of staff know exactly where they stand, before the same thing happens again. Just let them know this is for school/business use, and is not intended for personal emails. It would also be fair to inform them should a case be raised against the school and it becomes necessary for this email account to be investigated, any personal emails, such as declarations of love towards, or slagging off fellow workers, will also be trawled through.

Obviously if we ever go down sky plus route we will disconnected the unused old wire. Just had sky+ installed at home, and in case you didn't know, the sky+ box requires a different cable to the dish, and the dish itself uses a different unit (apologies for not knowing the correct name) which gathers the signal.

OK, here are 2 more logos/symbols (I'm not choosing these to offend anyone, but to try and illustrate the point that logos have been with us long before marketing men as we know them today). A good symbol/logo is a distillation of ideas into a shorthand or totem for a like-minded group. I'm not having a go at you mattx, but logos do have a role in society.

in an earlier post I asked for recommendations for a laptop for my daughter and eventually bought her a Lenovo 3000 N100. As she studies abroad it needs a continental power lead, and of course this model didn't come with one supplied. You know how it is at school, you're ankle deep in these things, but when you actually need one... I've been on to the supplier and they quote £15 for delivery - I didn't ask the price. They recommended two companies they supply, and none of those had them, nor had come across them. The part number is 42T 5114. Is there a supplier out there who can come up with a power lead? It's the normal two-pin plug with a clover leaf end to plug into the power brick/pack. Any help would be appreciated.

...until you become a managed service. In our area the plans seem to be for a central server farm with AD across the whole LEA, from primary to further education. You'll be given a username and password in reception and carry that through your time in education.

can I assume that you work in a secondary school? How did you cope with the ergonomics of monitors sat on machines when the pupil stands less than 1.5 metres tall? The problem is that different growth rates at that time of life tend to make ergonomics less a science, and more guesswork. I don't think that pupils will be spending the same amount of time in front of a computer that, say, a secretary will. You have to work to the average.

Usually I get a headache when the wife launches something heavy in my direction.

In a lot of cases, it's not about reading the books, as they're in Italian or Latin or Da vinci's handwriting. just marvel at the craft, the artistry. For a while when I lived in Sheffield I worked as a blacksmith, but now and again I'd go down to Kelham Island Museum and watch the "Little Mesters" fashioning a bowie knife (usually for American tourists) from a lump of red hot steel. the way they'd work and edge, fold the steel, temper it, aware of the sound ringing true. Read "Mishima's Sword: Travels in Search of a Samurai Legend " where the writer goes to Japan in search of the sword used to help Mishima commit ritual sepuku. Look up the chapters where he visits a swordmaker, see how he folds the steel up to 30 times judging and tempering all the time... I seem to have gone off on one here. apologies all round.

I think it's actually a step forward, metaphorically speaking. You're being given the chance to go into a virtual British Library, which is a good few hundred miles from you Webman (and even where I live up north ) and get up real close to some of the most amazing books ever produced. Take the Lindisfarne Gospels, hand illuminated over many years by Bishop Eadfrith (Bishop of Lindisfarne 698-721 AD). Reproducing that detail on the web is going to use an enormous amount of resources, but that's rather like complaining about the frame of Botticelli's Primavera.
