I managed to string one of these con-men along for 32 minutes last week - and they had almost exactly the same script (including double left-clicking when it should be single-clicks). mb

Well i just managed to waste thirty two minutes of their "technical expert"'s (who admitted that he was based in India) time Apparently now that my Windows PC is no longer supported by Microsoft, errors and warning are sent to their Windows Service Centre in Bradford which is where they detected that my PC was running slowly and may have malware and stuff on it! When i typed "eventvwr" into the run box there were "dozens" of errors - although the tech didn't know what a "dozen" was so i has to say "twenty four" instead. Also, did you know that typing "prefetch" into the run box will show you all of the malware that has been downloaded to your PC from the Internet. You can confirm this by double-clicking on any file contained therein and Windows will say that it cannot open it I asked him to confirm my computer name or IP address and he said that it was "secret" but kept repeating my home address (which is in the phone book). Give him credit though, he hung on whilst i openly called him a lier, threatened to report him to the authorities and challenged him on his knowledge of computers - but in the end he hung up without even saying goodbye So next time i need to keep 'em talking for more than 32 minutes mb

Actually it took a couple of hours for the "update SIM" SMS to come through, and i still can't connect to T-Mobile because they only offer 3G where i am currently sat. Still, can't wait to see it in acion mb

...of course everybody is missing the best solution to the problem of deaths (and injuries and accidents etc.) on the road - more trained traffic police out on the job!!!! That way, sensible young drivers can go about their business at night, in daddies Ferrari, with their sensible mates and not get any hassle. Meanwhile the reckless, drunken, bald-tyred, uninsured, half-blind, drugged-up, failed MOT, nearly asleep, un-taxed, faulty lighting, never passed a test, inconsiderate nutters (be they in a car, on a bicycle, as a pedestrian or whatever) would be liable to draw attention to themselves and be subjected to a stop for further questioning and investigation (and where appropriate, prosecution). The trouble is that that costs money, and for the authorities the old "if it saves just one life" only applies if we are paying for it ourselves (they have senior executive lifestyles to fund ). mb

Are the colons valid in the MAC address (i.e. which WOL.EXE are you using)? Does the source machine have a firewall? Is the target on the same subnet? mb

I must admit that i do like the look of those! There was a brief article on that BBC (dumbed down TV) Click! programme and as well as the obvious benefits (multi-users etc.) they mentioned that it shows you exactly how much data you have used up (important if you are sharing the device on PAYG) and the fact that you don't have to install any special software on your PC (because it uses WiFi to connect). My 3 USB dongle comes with awful software that eats up 99% of available CPU and keeps trying to connect to China (but gets blocked by my firewall) - and yes, it is a pukka device from a 3 shop. Can't wait for the other networks to bring out their own MiFi™ type device and bring some competition into the game mb

Why start by travelling sooooo far? You have got the Black Country Living Museum on your doorstep where you could easily spend a day exploring how people used to live. Then pop in you car and check out the Ironbridge Gorge Museums - you can get a "passport" that gives you unlimited access to all ten museums for a whole year and an open invitation to make one visit to any that you missed after that time! mb

It is probably booked up for this year, but try to get into Broad Meadow House next year! Their web-site isn't too great (they aren't "surgically attached to our computers"), but search for reviews and they all seem positive. Set the screen background to, say, a dark blue (but not so dark as you can't see the thrip). Then move your mouse in front of the bug and try to attract it to the light. Once hooked, steer it to the edge of the screen so that should it die (and they won't last long sandwiched in the glass) it won't be visible. If a manufacturer came up with a "thunderfly proof" screen, they would get a fantastic marketing opportunity (especially if they patented the technology first ). mb
