There's a new kernel coming out this week (or that will be the start of staged release), which does a better job of hyper-v. I say better job... it is probably the best we can hope for in terms of the drivers etc. but installation may still require a little manual tickling, and we don't know for sure wether this will give good enough performance (we know it will be better... but better enough is hard to tell until it is in customer hands).

If its just web downloads... isolate with a proxy and no route?

Everyone who suggested some sort of access control device between your network and the open internet has the right sort of idea - accountability and authentication are key there.

Think about home modem/routers - dhcp servers on there generally linux, and they work with anything... @3s-gtech; is right dhcp is standard, at least for configuring IPs (it can be used for loads more!) you should never find clients which won't get an IP off a particular server, unless you run into a fairly odd bug!

I rip mp3 and it is "good enough" tbh.. but that's a different debate. Certainly the squeeze will handle various MP3, OGG, Flac and I think AAC too. And the server software is good. And there are smartphone apps.

Squeezebox = way forward. Pete, our sysadmin, is running squeezeserver on some NAS device, I run mine on an old dell desktop with a server grade disk in it. I have 2 sqeezes, an old mk1 on the hifi, and a new radio in the bedroom. The newest "touch" versions are a mite $$ but you can get old mk2s on ebay for little money, and theres no real advantage to the newer ones except album art.

What problems are you finding with protx? I don't see how the LA could _stop_ you putting in additional filtering, although double-bagging your filtering has the odd isssue (block once, unblock twice) it is not totally impractical.

I use a few wget --mirror commands.. but that would be a bit sequential... threads in perl are messy, and LWP doesnt like threading.. so either perl, and fork wget commands, or python and its internal webget bits. nile_c might be able to give you a pointer there.

The above is (largely) correct. It is possible to transparently proxy SSL without MITM, but I only know of one product that supports it, and its not released yet Squid3 will MITM, but I doubt it would work in transparent or for kindles.

@walker01642: Generally not a problem, no. What we'd usually advise people to do is not authenticate for the sophos update site. There's 101 ways to solve it though - including using connection-based auth methods like NTLM (where each actual connection is auth'd rather than session auth). I am sure one of my colleagues would be happy to set you up an evaluation if you are considering a move.

I would suggest that at a minimum you would have to contact Bloxx and buy the renewals, and they might not be fantastically keen from a hardware support point of view. I don't want to put words into thier mouths of course, but Bloxx is a lot more than just the box it runs on IYSWIM. If you want to look at Smoothie stuff - and you might find that running Smoothie on your own tin is fairly cost effective - I suggest you PM SeanLaz on here - he looks after your area.

Java _generally_ doesn't like proxy auth (yeh, what a bunch of cr*p) can you set "do not auth for" just on that particular site?
