Cheers Michael, there were no IP addresses specified in the forwarders tab, so I put in the two for the SWGfL DNS servers and all is working well. IE now finds the internet using the SWGfL proxy specified in LAN settings.

It looks like a DNS problem; DNS is installed on the new DC but when I open DNS MMC it says that the DNS server has not been configured. However, I can still see all the forward and reverse lookup zones? How do I configure the new DC to be a DNS server? Thanks in advance!

Sorry Ric, the DC's IP address is static, what I was meaning by DHCP was that the DNS server is specified in the scope options of DHCP:). Thanks for the proxycfg command, I'll give it a go tomorrow!

Default gateway could be it, though I think that it's set correctly in the DHCP scope options as the router's IP. I'll do an ipconfig /all tomorrow and report back...

Hi all! I'm in the process of migrating from an old Classlink domain controller to a new Server 2003 domain controller. All the clients were set to use the Classlink server as an internet proxy but all of these have been changed to use the SWGfL proxy, all working fine. However, the new DC won't accept the SWGfL proxy for the internet, the only way it will connect to the internet is by using the Classlink server as a proxy. Sorry it's a bit long winded, my first server migration outside of a test lab, I'm thinking it maybe a DNS issue? Any help gratefully received!

Hi All, I'm migrating user data from one server to another and while I'm at it I'd like to sort a little headache while I'm doing it... Since I've been at my current school (3 yrs) all user folders have been called 'username' but then have a 'cached' and 'uncached' folder below. All the users actual files are in the 'cached' folder and the 'uncached' is empty (I think it may be a legacy from our ClassLink XP days) Is there a quick way that I can batch copy all files and folders from the 'cached' folder up one level to the 'username' folder, for all of my users (200+) , so that my share paths are \\server\students\username instead of \\server\students\username\cached ?

My school has recently upgraded to a new linux box for Espresso and subsequently I have the old CachePilot kicking around. I took the cover off and saw that it's got 1 gig of RAM and a 120GB HDD, so I'm thinking of turning it into a Moodle server. Has anyone else done anything with an old CachePilot? If anyone is interested I'll post up some development pics, I've already had to reset the CMOS to gain access to the BIOS.

Thanks again guys, kmount that link was just what I was looking for, all the DHCP scope and reservations were imported from the old server using DHCPEXIM. I'm on half term next week so I might go in and see if I can change the settings get the clients logging on. Oh, an the new server is Server 2003.

HI all, I've recently got a new server to replace our aging domain controller and I've been going through the process detailed here: Step By Step Guide for Migrating Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 Server | Windows Reference So far I've done 3 of the 4 steps: New server is on the domain and holds all 5 FSMO roles plus the GC role, I've migrated all shares and transferred and authorised DHCP. Did all the checks with DCDIAG's, all fine. Before demoting the old (Server 2000) server I thought I'd see if a client could log on with the old server removed from the network (took the network cable out of the server). The client connected to the domain but was ssssllllooooooowwww, around 8-10 mins to log on. I researched the problem and found that the clients have the old server's IP address as the DNS server If I demote the old server to a member server and remove it from the domain, give the new server the same name and IP address as the old server as described here (Disconnect the old server (win server 2000),Raise the domain level functionality to native Windows 2003,Rename your new windows server 2003(Part4) | Windows Reference) Will this cure my really slow logons? Sorry it's a long post, any help/guidance is gratefully received!

Both servers are in the ICT suite where I spend the majority of my time, so I tend to go direct to them instead of via MSTSC. I use the servers throughout the day to check on backups, run scripts, that sort of thing...

I'll typically take it out of standby at least 10 times every day, so I think a tft looks like a better option. (Currently there are 2 Viglen Servers connected to the UPS)

During a recent power outage it was noted that while both our servers were connected to an APC 1000 UPS, our KVM'd monitor was not, meaning the servers could not be shut down. Power was restored before the UPS ran out of juice but now I want to add the monitor to the UPS. I spoke to a friend of mine about this and he said that it wasn't the best idea to add CRT's to a UPS as they can cause spikes and surges themselves!?! Is my friend right or am I ok to add my monitor to the UPS? Cheers in advance!

Ive got a Viglen LX 260 at my school and had the same problem, my solution might apply to you: Open the case up and have a look at the SCSI backplane behind the drives, there should be an 8 segment LED with either a number or letter displayed. Cross reference this number to the error codes in the manual: ftp://ftp.viglen.co.uk/files/Servers/LX260/Manual/LX260_Chassis_User_Guide.pdf (Pages 15-17) Mine had '2' on the display, meaning one of the fans was faulty. Popped in a new fan and all was well.

Hi all! I've got a Viglen LX260 Server with a single 73GB SCSI hard drive. The server has 5 available hot-swap bays controlled by a backplane. Can I just stick another SCSI drive in one of the bays or do I need to configure software RAID? I've had a look at the Server manual but it does nothing to explain the config. I know its a bit specific but any help would be great!

I'm looking at moving from a Viglen Classlink XP network () to a vanilla network (). I'm not a fan of Classlink but its one redeeming feature is that when you login to a machine it puts the user's name and AD group in the corner of the desktop. Anyone know how to do this without the need for classlink? I assume its Active desktop related

I'm getting close to the green light for a new domain controller to replace our ageing Viglen DC and I'm looking for some advice on setting up the new server (1st time setting up a server outside of a uni lab!) I'm migrating from Server 2000 to 2003 and want to ditch Viglen's server software at the same time btw. Any tips on the migration process would be great, also anyone who has ditched Viglen and any issues post Classlink.

Hi there. Currently I am using a batch file consisting of a list of shutdown commands to shutdown our ICT suite (17 PC's all XP SP2). I am finding that if one of the PC's has been shutdown prior to the batch file running the batch file hangs at the command to shutdown that PC. Has anybody got a solution/command/workaround that will ignore/skip PC's that are already shutdown? I know its only 17 PC's and they're all in 1 room but I want to run the script as a scheduled task. Any ideas welcome!

Hi there! I am also having pains with Classlink XP and I'm looking to do away with it this summer. I have 3 questions however; 1. Can Classlink be removed without doing a complete format and installation of the Server OS? 2. Is there anyway to replicate the bottom right hand corner of the classlink desktop (getting the username dislayed) using Active Desktop? 3. In the mean time, can I change the classlink background to anything other than a block of colour? Kind Regards, Dan
