Sorry for bringing alive such an old post, but does anyone know what kind of script this is, and what I need to do to enable it to run for Student users using a GPO on a 2008 R2 Server?
-
They are older NC6120 and NC6320 laptops. I'll have a look in the BIOS and see if I can find anything. I have been looking for an app which might do the job, but could not find anything, and I removing the driver will remove the wireless which I don't want. I am using the standard Windows for Wireless Card Configuration (and not a 3rd party tool). I will also see how easy it is to get to the wireless card in these and if there is an option to disable the button on them when I return in the new year.

I have been having a problem with students clicking on the wireless icon and changing what network the wireless card connects to (or removing the wireless connection). Is there a way to disable students from doing this, while keeping the connection to the wireless enabled using a GPO setting? I also want to keep access of this enabled for Administrators (who need to set the wireless up) and Teachers (who need this to connect to their home wireless networks). I just want to disable students from changing it.

I have got a batch of HP Laptops which have a Wireless on/off button next to the power switch. Unlike most other laptops which have an on/off switch which can be glued on to prevent the children from switching the wireless off, these buttons cannot. With these being a button it is not possible to glue it, and also not possible to de-solder it or disconnect it. Does anyone have any ideas (software or otherwise) of another option to disable this button?

cc4 needed in a primary school
CommodoreS replied to crazytechnician's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I look after a CSE system and have never had any major problems with it. It just works, and is standard vanilla based so easy to configure and make changes the way Windows is suppose to be used. If you have a CC4 problem then it is usually CC4 specific that only the CC4 developers know how to fix. If RM release a CC4 update that is marked as critical, or will solve a problem you are having, you do feel compelled to install it. And like I said far too many times they have then broken more stuff than they have fixed meaning everything has to be rebuilt again. and again. -
Sounds like you might be running an old version of RM Tutor 4. The newest version is RM Tutor 4.1 (9.4.0.5) which integrates settings for RM Tutor into the Management Console of CC4. You can download the update from the RM Website in My Account and Product Downloads.

cc4 needed in a primary school
CommodoreS replied to crazytechnician's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I am not bashing CC4, but I'd avoid CC4 at all costs for many reasons. I spend far more time at the schools with CC4 systems than other systems (CC3 included). The main problem is every time a core update is released, this results in most of the machines falling over and requiring to be rebuilt which takes a lot of time, and problems such as trying to get teachers laptops from them to do this, and laptops need to be hard wired, so if you have lots of wireless laptops this is very problematic. Read posts on here and their own Community Forums and most will agree to what I have said. Because the system is unique with their own Database you are also stuck with having to subscribe to RM support on a yearly basis (just to download updates to fix the problems with their buggy product), and their support costs increase every year. If you do need support, most of this is now down in a foreign country and not the UK. Then they release updates which break more than they fix, eventually releasing another update to fix what the last update broke, and this has happened far more than once! Not only that but the speed of systems on CC4 is appalling, due to all the RM tools running and loading. Older systems are almost impossible to use no matter how much RAM you fit in them. Vanilla is the way to go, but CSE is another option worth looking into which will give you a fast, stable Vanilla system with a toolbox to make tasks easier and meaning a permanent technician is not required. This is not bashing. This is fact. -
I am not sure if anyone can help with this problem. On a CC3 network in IE8 when a teacher goes to YouTube - Broadcast Yourself then get a very poorly formatted page. Almost as if it is designed for a mobile browser. It also appears like this in IE6 on the server (which also has a message saying its an unsupported browser). However when I visit https://www.youtube.com/ everything appears perfectly normal and how youtube should appear. YouTube - Broadcast Yourself also appears perfectly normal for administrators, so it seems to be an IE setting for teacher users causing this. I have tried enabling "Do Not Save Encrypted Pages To Disk" as this solved an problem I was having with Hotmail, but this has not solved the Youtube problem. Has anyone got any advice please as to what this problem might be?

Thats what I thought, but wanted to check after reading the post from Templar above.

Today I found out in Suffolk it is 3 quotes for anything over £10k and only 1 quote is required below this. It would be useful to have more info on the requirements for Academies as I have not been able to find anything out and not sure who I would contact about it.
-
Is it still a requirement that Primary Schools have to have a VLE, and if so is there any documents available with further details. It would also be useful to know if Academies are required to have one as well.
-
I wondered if anyone can point me towards an (official) regulation document about schools having to gain 3 quotes from different companies when spending public money.

As far as I am aware no updates and fixes have been released for this version of the software since 2008. I find it extremely poor that this is a known bug in the software, and they expect £295 to fix this problem as it is not something that myself or the school has done wrong, but a problem caused by being supplied with buggy software in the first place. I tried the database on my PC at home which has no proxy and it worked without any errors displaying, so definitely appears to be an issue with the proxy server settings. I've added the school proxy details into the database, although interestingly the software never crashed after re-running it at home which the schools proxy details entered. There does not seem to be any way to disable or remove the proxy settings completely. It was on port 0 when I opened it, and there is no way to blank to port number.

Thanks for the help. I will try the repair tool later today. Unfortunately the school does not want to pay the £295 per year for support for this, and Microlib will not help you out at all unless you pay that. Its a shame they don't have a smaller support fee for solving one off issues, as I expect there will not be another problem in the next year, and £295 for support for one program for a small junior school seems a little excessive. With regards to the password, I found an 9 year old freeware tool which immediately gave the password: Access PassView v1.12 so not that difficult to find it out.

I have a problem with Junior Librarain 3, that when you go into the Librarian Only section, the program crashes with an error. It also displays the error when going into Enquiry but continues. I have attached a image of the error. It also creates a socket.log file with the information: Userarea.Initialize Start Proxy Information Server: () Port: 0 (0) Username: Socket Error 10053 Network connection aborted by local host Socket Error 10053 Network connection aborted by local host Userarea.ReadObject('http://www.microlib.co.uk/download/info.htm',5) Failed with error 10053 Application-defined or object-defined error [RuntimeDLL at 0] Extended Error: Network connection aborted by local host 10053 Network connection aborted by local host [RuntimeDLL at 28310] Userarea.Initialise Failed Does anyone know what might be causing this issue? I am guessing it is a corruption in the MDB database files. I have worked out the password for the LIBRARIAN.MDB file is but do not know where to go from there. Does anyone know how to fix this problem please?

I have been having some people mention that when they print to the Networked Kyocera C5300DN printer from Adobe Reader sometimes lines and other items are missing from the printout, however they print out fine to other printers. I am wondering if this might be something to do with the printer driver being used, as Kyocera offer 3 different drivers for download: Download Center | ServiceWorld | KYOCERA MITA - laserprinter, printer, copier, multifunctionals Classic PCL5 Universal Driver Classic KPDL Universal driver KX driver (certified and signed by Microsoft) Does anyone know which one would be best to use, and the differences between the drivers?

Does anyone know any UK companies (apart from RM) that can supply replacement batteries for the RM NBook 4100 (AKA Compal HL91)? I have tried a equivalent battery to the BATEL80L6 that is in them at the moment (designed for Acer Laptops), but it did not work.

Thank you for the help and advice.

I am looking to buy some new laptops and am trying to find makes and models which support direct slot-in docking stations rather than just USB ones. So far I have just found the HP 2009 120W Advanced Docking Station and HP ProBook 6555b laptops which seem quite expensive. Does anyone have any other recommendations please?

Looking for Summer Work in Liverpool or Essex area.
CommodoreS posted a topic in Educational IT Jobs
Hi, I am looking for a full time summer job in a school to cover the summer holidays period from late June until the schools return in September, preferably in the Essex or Liverpool areas. I am an experienced ICT Technician with over 12 years experience working in schools, on a variety of systems including RM networks, CSE and Vanilla systems. I have a full driving licence with my own vehicle, and I am CRB-verified with an Enhanced Disclosure. If interested please contact me by PM. -
Was not sure where to ask this. Does anyone know if Barnet LEA provide an Anti Virus solution to schools for free. and if so what it is?

I have just got 10 HP laptops running Win 7 Pro which I loaded one up with software and ghosted the other 9. For some reason there is no printers showing when you go to view printer in the control panel. However when you go into Word and print, all the printers are showing up fine (including smartboard, network, local etc...) and printing OK. The Laptops are standalone, but I have added them to the domain of the old CC3 server for drive mappings and a network printer. I did a quick search and found some problems relating to Bluetooth causing this problem for other people, but the Bluetooth services are running fine on the laptops. The problem is I can't share out local printers, or delete existing printers. Has anyone seen this problem before or have any ideas how to fix this please?

CC4 is still very unstable. Its a good system to have if you don't mind having to rebuild stations every time a software core update is released, which is quite often. Everyone is waiting for update 85 to be released before rebuilding stations after installing SR2, but RM has not been telling anyone when they are going to release update 85, and have only just said it could be yet another 2 weeks away, leaving one week of holidays left. It does not make things easy when planning to update several schools. Even the main ATSS partners are complaining and saying stuff like they want to blow up the system with C4. RM Communities

Thanks for the info, but still confused as to what method to use in BackupAssist to allow full system restores in the event of failure (most important), and the occasional user file (less important). Will ZIP backup be good enough to do a full Win 2008 restore with all the AD and configuration? BackupAssist - ZIP64 file and data backup, tape drive support, Windows Server 2008, VSS aware, compression, AES-256 encryption, multi-threading, Exchange and SQL support The new server has a 500GB RDX drive. The Windows 2003 server is being completely decommissioned as it is so old, so there is no option to use this.
