BBC micro:bit - Register Now
dobsonl replied to LosOjos's topic in Raspberry Pi, Arduino & Other SBCs
At a conference I was at a few weeks ago there was a BBC Digital rep, who said that they are starting with year 7s but at the same time they are also looking to see if they can "sell" the devices after the bulk shipments and if it is feasible to extend it to other year groups. -

Papercut - Script - prompt for colour or convert to grey
dobsonl replied to dobsonl's topic in Enterprise Software
That is perfect spot thank you, have just tested and it now works correctly -
Hi Guys, I am trying to write a script (my first one!) for papercut to prompt our users if the print job is colour to confirm they would like to print the document or convert it to greyscale. I have this script but I don't know why it keeps on printing in colour no matter if you click yes or no... is anybody able to look at what I have done wrong please? /* * Color print jobs require user confirmation * * Color printing is expensive so users should be encouraged to print * in grayscale whenever they print in color. No confirmation is required * for grayscale jobs. */ function printJobHook(inputs, actions) { /* * This print hook will need access to all job details * so return if full job analysis is not yet complete. * The only job details that are available before analysis * are metadata such as username, printer name, and date. * * See reference documentation for full explanation. */ if (!inputs.job.isAnalysisComplete) { // No job details yet so return. return; } // Test if the job is color (contains at least 1 color page) if (inputs.job.isColor) { // Add your action code here var response = actions.client.promptYesNo("This print job is color" + " and costs " + inputs.utils.formatCost(inputs.job.cost) + ". You can save money by printing the job in grayscale. " + "Are you sure you would like this print job in colour?", {"dialogTitle" : "Colour print job", "dialogDesc" : "Consider printing in colour to reduce costs"}); if (response == 'No') { actions.job.convertToGrayscale(); } else if (response == 'TIMEOUT') { actions.job.cancel(); } else { return; } } }

One thing that might be worth looking at is a Dell PowerEdge VRTX, this is a box that can hold upto 4 nodes and has a shared storage built into it - its a hefty outlay to begin with as others have said for visualization, but we are heading down the VRTX root to start our process off as we can certainty not afford the amount for a SAN & hosts & infrastructure required.

We use Parents Evening System here and have got to say our parents really love using it It also pulls all of its data out of the schools MIS so you don't have to keep on updating it every time somebody changes classes The staff were not as keen to begin with as it means they are being tracked a little more than the old pen and paper....

New school, new issues... How do I decommission a 2008 r2 DC?
dobsonl replied to Oaktech's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi Oaktech, If you have a read through this technet article it will tell you how to transfer the fsmo roles Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller, if they dont successfully transfer which might be the case as the current server is not functioning correctly then follow the seize roles... if you have to seize the roles you will need to delete the DC from AD using the working DC and then rebuild the entire OS on the "backup" server. One point that has caught me out in the article is step 5, when connecting to the server - this is the server that you want the roles to end up on (your working DC) Hope that helps -
We use subnetting.net - Subnet Questions and Answers with our students to teach them subnetting. I believe the questions are all about what's the first usable address in a subnet etc.

We did option 3 just over a year ago but from CC3. What we had to do was on the OU that our users were stored in create now user polices and use WMI filtering so they only applied to our newly built windows 7 computer that sat in a brand new OU structure with associated computer policies. The thing that took us a lot of time was configuring SCCM to deploy windows, updates & applications to our "new" machines... The best thing for us with keeping the same domain was not having to touch our Exchange server as it didn't require moving domains and all of users didn't notice any difference as their files remained the same on both systems, this was made easier by having the same version of office on both XP & win 7

Count me in please guys -
Silicon Alley for us as well, I also can't fault them for speed or quality. If you ever run out of tonner all you do is ring them up and it will be with you the next day and paying for the toner once you have used it is really easy for us with monthly stock takes.

Hi Guys, We have just reinstalled HAP, and unfortunately it has to run on one of our DC's. When we go into the setup page and fill in the details and click save we get the error below in event viewer. Has anybody got any ideas what is wrong? Thanks Luke

Hi @will_ We are a secondary school which until recently was with EIS Kent for our internet and filtering, but have since moved away for a variety of reasons. If I was you I would have a word with the guys & girls (Natalie and Kevin I dealt with mainly) in schools broadband and see if they can transfer you over to the NextGen Lightspeed filtering that they use for secondary schools. It is connectable straight to your AD and read out user accounts allowing staff & students to have different polices (we allow youtube for staff and the education version for students ) and it works 100% with google safe search. This is the same product that we now use on a virgin media connection at our school so if you need any advice let me know.

Live network map, has anyone seen one?
dobsonl replied to Yeo695's topic in Network and Classroom Management
@sdc would it be possible for you to send me a copy of your documentation for setting the dude up? -
We have this, and I agree with @Zourous although we complained about the stickers falling off and they sent us some larger clear stickers to stick over which seem to work and are more sticky

Evening All, Been fighting with this all day now and its doing my head in!!! Luckily its only affecting my workstation Windows 7 enterprise all patched up to date, no firewalls enabled (have checked windows firewall and SEP) can get internet access fine and access network servers but Dropbox won't connect (Machine has allow all rule on lightspeed and it worked prior to today) and when opening outlook it prompts for a username & password, this never used to happen and upon entering my domain credentials which are valid after 30seconds or so it opens up to my cached mailbox but working offline which cant be taken back online. Has anybody got any ideas? I cant cope with another day of using OWA!

I have a feeling that http server is not a valid command on the routers included in packet tracer... Cisco has this horrible habit of cutting out some of the commands. One thing you could try from enable mode is show ip http server status if this command does not work then the HTTP web interface for the router can not be enabled.

I'm not counting.... theres too many for my liking although they are getting upgraded slowly to windows 7

Hi Simon, Are you able to let us know when there is an update on the MIS Intergration for SIMs in available? -
How have you done the delete all part of your group policy preference? We have a problem where the printers are allocated to machines but the users seem to manage to pic them up and they follow them around... thinking this might solve the problem
