  1. Since Vista the “correct” way to launch an administrator assigned app on start up/logon is a scheduled task. It feels a bit of a regression to have to suggest a script to map a network drive. But I suppose from an ideological point of view during network drives is the regression. So.... If you have network drives then you have on prem servers. If you have on prem servers you have AD. If you have AD use a GP preference to map the drives. Once you are all in on the cloud you won’t have servers, or network drives and so the interdependency can be swept away in one step. Fwiw we still have old fashioned logon scripts and group policies doing thing that were right in 2001 but a pain to let go twenty years later.
  2. Yes we started allowing SSPR via group membership during the lockdowns. It was enabled on a case by case basis using a verified phone number from the MIS.
  3. Super handy, thanks! Quick q - you are using domestic TVs in classrooms? If yes, how many do you currently have over 3 years old? (I'm looking for data points to counter my fear/experience with them).
  4. Not classroom AV, but certainly a data point that is causing debate here: All the TVs that were bought here when we wanted to expand our digital display systems were dead within 3 years. All the professional grade displays from Samsung bought 12 years ago are still running strong.

So at the time (several years ago - Caveat lector), all the vendors said "trust us, anything over 4x4 is only for enterprises who want to spend silly money, it does not offer good return on investment for your scenario" this conversation was in the ac wave 2 era not ax They also strongly implied that while ax will be faster, it will take a long time before the types of devices to make it faster would be ubiquitous and affordable. Looks to me like 8x8 is in Aruba's flagship AP only. I still suspect that their advice holds, however I am several years out from my last detailed analysis. The technical reps were pleased to see MU-MIMO working quite so well in a classroom environement as on paper as mavhc says, is not quite ideal spacing. I would recommend anyone run a multi-room test on 8x8 APs before spending money on them. At some point they may fall into the sweet spot in the affordablity/performace matix. Maybe they are already, I don't know. As for 80 vs 40... it made not much difference at peak load. Over half the clients at the time didn't support 80 so the aps fell back to 40 for those transmissions, But the APs extended to 80 where they could. If we absolutely needed a higher minimum transmissionrate under load, we would have to have much higher densitiy of APs and 20Mhz channels. However in practice what we need is good-enough performance under multi-client load, and highest throughput affordable on an occasional basis (photos/video syncing), because most people want responsiveness not guaranteed minimum throughput.
  6. 80Mhz enabled, with no overlap between the wide channels between the test APs, and the base channels uncontended. We also made sure MU_MIMO and Beamforming was enabled. All devices were at -65dB or better, spaced as they would be in a 1:1 deployment. Two of the vendors sent 3 digit CWNE's. They seemed happy enough with the process and results. Our key finding (because the exponential fall-off in throughput was already known to us and is widely documented) was that MU_MIMO and Beamforming did make a small but appreciable difference in a busy environment such as ours. Those vendors that did better with that tech had better overall throughput. Subsequent anecdotal evidence suggests that running at 20 or 40Mhz wide decreases the preformance of our wlan in a way our users notice. The lack of high-density reference designs for 802.11ax suggests to me that there is minimal improvement in enterprise/public-space scale WLANs to be had.

  8. To return from my digression... If you are not putting one ap in each room (do what your RF design says, not what random people on forums advise)... but you are looking to the future (those cables are going to be ther ein 20 years)... make sure you have cabling in place to allow you to put an AP in ANY room, even if it isn't used in this year's itteration of your wireless network.

We had Aruba, Aerohive and Meraki come in and run a bake-off with 3 aps (3 from each vendor) across six classrooms with 180 devices and what we found was after you got to about 10 devices, under real world conditions (loading user roaming profiles) performance was consistantly sub 10Mb/s. Once past the peak, performance improved to the point where users did not notice a difference between wires and wireless devices, until 30 devices tried to upload 1Gb of photos each, at which point performance suffered again. This was all ac wave 2 kit. The performance measured was broadly in line with the details published by Aruba and Cisco in their Very High Density design documents. We engineered our solution to work around this by removing roaming profiles (they are depreciated and incompatible with OneDrive), and working with departments to ensure understood to spread the load of students uploading photos across a lesson, and to not wait until the last five minutes. To be clear, we regularly see 190+Mb/s per AP (sampled over 2 minutes, so the peak will be much higher), but never anywhere near 1Gb/s unless it is a large transfer from one (or maybe two) devices, and there is very little else on that AP.
  10. Only the biggest and most powerful and *earliest* APs have ever needed two cables so far. And after a generation, you get the same capabilities through single port. No wifi comes close to sustained 100Mb/s+ performance when under load from multiple devices (e.g. a class set of devices). No sign of any practical standard that will change that. We throw photos and videos around our ac wifi, and its just fine. I think we have reached a point that a properly designed wif put in anytime since AC wave 2 is good enough. Just as gigabit lans are good enough. At the agrigation point (servers/internet) multi-gigabit may be useful, but at the endpoints unless you are trying to throw 4K+ around then 1 cat6 per ap fine. If you are expecting to be throwing 4k/8k around, the shared medium of wifi is never going to be the right choice.

  13. The Lenovo USB-C cables are garbage. Look for alternatives (make sure to spec PD and DP ALT Mode).
  14. We are in a four month bridging period (up to April 2021) where previous arrangements continue. The UK has deamed that EU provisions are adequet to allow data to transfer from UK to EU. EU to UK transfer restrictions are delayed until the EU data protection board have ratified the recommendation from the European comission that the UK's provisions are adequet.   15. The 2930 line is geting long in the tooth now. If you choose this path you need to make sure you get the whole estate done before they EOL it. (unless there is a roadmap somewhere that indicates they will still be selling it for a fewq years yet?) The InstantOn switches look like they are the spiritual sucessor to OfficeConnect. In that line the 1910 and 1920 were secretly the 5210 and while not quite up to the 29xx capabilities would have been good enough for small to medium schools' edge switches. The 25 switch limit is probably entirely artificial, to force market segmentation For me, other than this depressing hard limit, I would say look at the warranty. The HPe/Aruba limited lifetime warranty and access to firmware updates are worth ther weight (of the swtiches) in gold. Do the InstantOn switches come with that?
  16. I'd counter that with over the last six years we've had nothing but happiness with Sharp.* Key to happiness is definately getting the devices correctly spec'd. If your projected output is near to the limit of the proposed device, get a bigger device. The other key is actually the maintenance compant used. Are they invested in the brand, or are they out to sell you new devices/move on to the next customer in three years time? Direct support/maintenance from the the brand seems to be better as their furtunes are tied to their delivery - a bad service and you wont be able to perusade you to buy their new devices when the time comes. *I mean, there are still occasional problems, but nothing like the levels i have saeen with Canon, Kyocera, and Ricoh.

It will be *just another little server* much like AADConnect or Azure App Proxy.
  18. This is so frustrating. Back in W95 days they tried to make the way to create documents the same as classic mac and now Google - just create a new one in the filesystem and open it up. The OO paradigm never really took hold in the Windows user base, and so, still today the answer to the question "where did you save it" is "in Word"
  19. We did have a period of adjustment as people got used to files taking a few moments to re-hydrate (be pulled down from the internet). We were lucky that in 2014 our plan was to move to the cloud before the next server refresh, so we never went to SSD/NVMe 10Gb/s servers, but that said our SAN and 1Gb/s lan was/is way faster than many legacy networks out there, and colleagues were a little frustrated with OneDrive performance vs SMB shares. Once hydrated though, it is all local file access - so actually faster than SMB file shares. On the topic of your internet connection(s), I would suggest that 100/100 might be a problem particularly if people have large files. You'd want at least 500/200 or 1000/200. When we moved to 500/500 we were using 100% of the 100Mb/s line most of the day (pre-OneDrive). With OneDrive we see peaks of 400 down and 200+ up. (the way the statistical monitoring works, we do see many many bursts of 500-900 Mb/s, but when reporting over a 24hr period these are smoothed out to 400 or less).

  21. you can sync Sharepoint sites in the onedrive app and storage sense takes care of these too. We have seating plans which reduces the need to roam settings or repeat the First time logon experience. (I actually held off the OneDrive migration a couple of years until management implemented this!)
  22. Files on Demand (enabled by default) and Storage Sense (configurable via GP or Endpoint/Intune Policy) solves this for us. Devices with 256 gb storage do not run out of space. Some of them have 90-120 profiles on them.

  24. They are smaller (user count) than we are and have a far far simpler IT requriements (a CRM, + Google/Microsoft, their web front end, and maybe a lan with wifi). Two people could easily handle everything bar the web front end. Quite possible that the CEO backed by some of the dev team are all there is. Compliance would be pretty simple - have everything handled by the CRM and tweak the appropriate knobs in Google/M365. Their DPO and CFO would be calling the shots there. CRM Support training and development would be outsourced. The platform the Web Front End runs on would be outsourced to AWS/Azure Printing is easy to fully outsource. Network Infrastructure (assuming they actually have physical offices - they could have a fully WFH environment) could be provided ans supported as part of their managed services contract for their office building. Remember they do not come with legacy IT as bagage. They could probably be run the whole show on Chromebooks + a bit of AWS.
  25. If it is anything like the Wireless IAPs, enrolling it to central hands configuration authority to the management platform. It's likely you wont be able to 'manually' update the running config. I would have thought that the HP Partner that arranged the trial would be keen to provide the support you need. If you don't like the experience they aren't going to convert you to a paying customer, and a fleet of 2930's would be quite a lot of revenue to pass up.
