1. Hi all Question: We have a school we support, they just purchased a brand new server (the existing one is Currently running 2008!!!) So we looking to refresh everything At the moment their their school domain name is schoolname.local We are looking to get them on a hybrid setup with Office365 However their Servers and DC are in such a bad state at the moment, All sorts of weird and strange group policies login scripts and all sorts we thought it would be better to redo everything from scratch and start again (We inherited an awful setup from the previous providers with the DC also acting as a file server despite being on a very powerful host and school also got hit with ransomware few years ago too but thats another story altogether very weird setup) They have a 365 tenant already setup in the format of schoolname.sch.uk The idea is that we create them a brand new domain however i wanted to create this domain in the format of schoolname.sch.uk matching their 365 tenancy email, however though know when creating a brand new domain it complains about the netbios name and UPN Suffix currently the domain name is schoolname.local Question is, in order for me to create the new domain based on the format of schoolname.sch.uk will i need to Demote the existing Domain Controller completely then try creating the new domain from scratch or is there another way around it? Anyone come across this before, there is the option of adding a UPN Suffix, however for this it would require to promote the new DC as a domain controller and work off the existing one, however as much as possible i am trying to avoid working off the current domain and just want to start everything from scratch
2. Could you copy your connect.ini file? you can blank out any sensitive info can take a look we got a similar setup like yours.
3. Did you reinstall SOLUS from scratch on the new server i.e. New Database? or did you migrate the SOLUS database over to the new box?
4. Yup thats the plan to build an RODC at the second site Site one we using hybrid setup which has the azure ad connect client that syncs the AD users to 365 Plan is to have RODC at site 2
5. OMG! Yes you are right!!!! That worked, the old machine was still on the old domain not planning to move things over till next week! rejoined one of the old machines to the new domain and worked ! Doh! Thanks both Gosh something so simply overlooked!
6. Hi! Question, maybe something easy or straight forward just been banging my head about this 2 Schools we have School A based in City 1 IP Range:

10.52.26.0/23

School B based 20miles away in another City IP Range:

10.2.54.0/23

Both Schools are connected via VPN we are using RM Broadband and connectivity between both sites work, School A has the main server which has a DC/File Server and everything else School B currently we have got rid of the server for now and everything is running from School A, the school is running a single network I logged in to School B Server today and able to ping the DC/host and everything correctly which sits on

10.52.26.240 However when i try to browse from School B via Server name i.e. \\school-dc01\ I am unable to reach it! i can perfectly browse through IP address but not host name Anything i need doing? I am sure i have missed out something easy! Just cant for the life of me figure it out

7. Hi Guys Anyone managed to successfully migrate from Google Suite > Office365 We have a School that are RM Federated currently on Suite and looking to Migrate to Office365 Quite a small school and we have applied for a 365 Tenancy account which is currently under review We are planning to use a Migration tool to do the Migration of Google Data/Emails etc to handle this However the question is we will need to change the MX Records to make the transfer, and the school have asked to priortise on moving the admin and heads email accounts first then the teachers can follow after I guess its not possible to have both 365 and gmail running at the same time right? Any pointers or suggestions on best way to schedule this! First time we are doing it so want to cause as little disruption as we can!
8. Thanks, its one of these situations where someone has said to the school go fully cloud despite not seeing the bigger picture The School has a bunch of Applications that run off their server such as SIMS/FMS and a bunch of other applications so going fully cloud won't work unfortunately but they are not seeing that, i was thinking possibly by downscaling a bit getting like a decent cheap server to run the applications on then for the Teaching staff go down the route of fully 365
9. Hi all Quick question Got a school their server is on its way out, they have suggested to go completely serverless and go fully cloud (not something we want to do we can only advise the school though) has around 200 students and about 20 Staff/Teachers/Admins etc All the devices in the school are windows devices they only recently ordered around 80 windows laptops recently. They are currently on the O365 A1 License, going fully cloud with this license wont be possible so i am assuming they need to upgrade to A3 License for all pupils and teachers https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/academic/compare-office-365-education-plans?activetab=tab:primaryr1 We are looking at using intune for management possibly Regarding intune does anyone know if this comes as part as A3 or are there any additional costs associated with it? I'm assuming if we get intune is there a limit of devices which we can manage? anyone know how the intune model works?
10. Funny you mention this just in the past few weeks or so we have experienced the same issue with not only one, but 3 of the primary schools we support! Random Devices would just pick up a 169 IP address, some of these schools have completely brand new Switches and APs and new servers too and have also ruled out any DHCP issues too, eventually it fixes itself after a reboot or so Still trying to figure whats going on, mixture of laptops wonder if its some strange update or something perhaps.
11. Hi Guys One of our schools we support are moving completely down the route of Google Chrome Book, they have purchased a bunch of Chrome books and the Educational licensing and we due to setup in the next few weeks or so, Its all completely new to us this so first time we getting involved in this setup, its a managed setup we are deploying I'm assuming its extremely straight forward to setup, once the licenses are activated on the console, setup the polices from within the console, select what apps you want to push out and user setup and all sorts then once we unbox the chrome books its just a case of connecting them to Wifi, sign in using the admin account and it will then download all the policies automatically I guess thats all there is to it right? Its for a small primary school, would you recommend setting up generic class logins? or each individual pupil have their own logins? any other tips or pointers? Thanks
12. Thanks something like this attachment?
13. Hi We recently implement Aruba Access points to a school replacing their old existing ruckus ones, everything is managed through Aruba Central Since then the Chromebooks specifically are unable to detect to the copier/printing they were printing to, its a UTAX Copier Any familiar with Chrome books and what technology they use for printing? or anyone came across a similar issue and how to resolve it?
14. Thanks! Actually found a workaround just incase anyone else has this issueThere was a utility on the dell website called Intel Optane Memory and Storage Management Under the manage section it detected the current RAID which was already setup and only showed it one disk being in the array, there was an option to select the newly installed disk and to rebuild the array, clicked on and it looks like its rebuilding now!So seems like have to manually rebuild the ARRAY on optiplex machines
15. Hi Guys One of the Schools running a P2P Server, with a RAID 1 Configuration Last week one of the Drives had failed completely so been running off one Drive for the past few days or so, PC was still under warranty luckily by Dell! so we logged a service call with them for an engineer to come over to replace the faulty Hard Drive Engineer popped over the first problem was that he said to us there was only one HD installed on the machine, which was not the case there were 2 Drives and he was looking under Device manager and it showed the RAID controller as one drive not multiple which is normal! So told him either open up the case or check in Bios and he should be able to see the second drive, this was the first problem so he did that..wasnt too impressed by his initial diagnostics So told him that needs to replace the failed Hard Drive with the new one he had and it should then rebuild itself and mirror itself...did all that..then after a while the school calls back and said Engineer has done his bit but they are now seeing some new Drive which is BLANK and the engineer said something to them that the RAID controller needs rebuilding (School didnt really understand all this so just related the message to us across) So i logged on to their machine and found that this new drive he had replaced was just showing up as an additional Hard drive! Rather than a RAID hard Drive, Unless i am missing something surely its should be a case of unplug the old faulty disk / plug in the new one and let the RAID do its job correct?
16. to answer your original query criteria is Wifi 6 and to have the infrastructure in place to "Make the solution work" which is what DFE has told us With us we have gone for New access points mixture of Aruba AP515 and Cisco APS for certain Schools HP / Cisco Switches CAT 6 Cabling from Cab to Cab and Switch to Data point some places we have done Twin Ports Fibre to Fibre or Cat6 from Cab to Cab - for outside classrooms we have either gone with Fibre or Cat 6 Catenary cabling 10 Year Licensing / Warranty Bigger Cabs (We have found that the existing ones a lot of the schools have are too small so we have gone for Bigger cabs) you also need to do a Tech Evaluation / Site Survey (DFE will fund upto 1/2 day of this) Then the usual costs they will fund like Project management (If you are dealing with external Cablers), Deployment and Configuration etc DFE was willing to fund all the above Some of our schools have been approved from £20 £40k Region and these are mainly Small Primary and Infant Schools
17. When did the school get invited for this? Have left it really really late especially with the first wave of schools eligible for the program the claims cut off date is end of Feb as far as i can remember there was also some Submission cut off date back in December, DFE should have sent you or the school all this information in a pack when the school got invited
18. Thanks Steve! Just switched that on and just have to see how it goes! Setting was hidden deep inside the Aruba Central Panel! Thanks!
19. Hi all Just installed new Aruba APs 515 at a school On newer laptops + iPad and Mobile Devices we are able to see all the SSIDs that are being broadcasted and works fine However on some of the older laptops we are unable to see any of the SSIDs that are being broadcasted - not an issue with the APS and they all work as expected Had a look at Winver some of them are running 1607 Windows 10 (The IT Support is not done by us unfortunately done by another 3rd Party, we were just contracted to undertake the Wifi Installation) Unfortunately we did not have domain admin rights to try and update the drivers or the Windows Version I also spotted this within Aruba Central i noticed that 2.4GHZ was switched off, some of the laptops are quite old! Just wondering though could it be possibly that because 2.4ghz is disabled on the SSID some of the older laptops is not picking up any of the SSIDs? We have advised the schools 3rd party that Windows needs updating and also the wireless drivers, however though..... for now Was going to test this out but already left site by now and wont be there for some time! anyone have any thoughts? See attachement
20. They seem to be still accepting an updated cost matrix, we planning to redo cabling for 2 of our schools and they seem to be open to the fact that we can resubmit things..even at such late stage
21. Queried this again with the DFE about getting existing cat5e cabling replaced to Cat6a They now turned around and said yes they would be willing to cover the cost and even if we required twin data ports per AP they would be willing to fund this too! Originally they said no to us, but now they have said yes so looking to get this done with some of the schools that we have not already done, back to the drawing board again getting quotes and resubmissions of cost matrix as such a late stage!
22. Thanks guys for the comments and feedback Yup distance is probably around 5/10 meters away not farm and yes its on facilitating an internet connection School is primary a cloud based school for more or less everything, no server on site just a small box feeding DHCP and everything else filesharing etc is all done through office365 and managed by intune and a couple of admin machines (which is completely separate from the main curriculum) The school is part of the DFE Connect to Classroom project so they got funding and wanted to go all our basically, they are with RM and i have a feeling their router is only a 100mb (Just double checking this) they were one of the schools many years ago that qualified for the FTTN fibre to school project
23. Yeh correct Router does not have an SFP+ Port, i could probably check with RM/SWGFL the schools ISP if they are willing to provide a router with SFP+ Capabilities, not too sure about that though whether they would! Yup going to probably opt for Single Mode
24. Hi Quick question not sure if someone can be able to advise trying to figure out how best to design this So we have a small school they have 2 cabs at the moment 1) Room 1 - one Cab just have routers and main line goes through here and thats all nothing else 2) Room 2 - across the other side of the corridor, has one cab in there and currently a bunch of switches Room 1 and room 2 is currently connected via copper (Cat5 link back) School wants to get Fibre install between the 2 cabinets and get rid of the cat 5 link For room 2 we are going to get an Aruba 2930m with SFP+ capability, already have the switch and the SFP+ Module and also planning to get a fibre panel installed in room 2 so the fibre connection as this end would be the end of the fibre cable pluged into the SFP+ port on the Switch however in room one where would the other end be plugged into, will i need some sort of converter or something? There is no plans to put any switches in room 1 and the plan is to install a fibre panel too so how would the connection start in room one? probably something basic im missing! see attached image
25. For upgrading SQL server use the SIMS Migration tool (for FMS/SIMS)which capita provide, dont use DBattach using the Migration tool The rest are just flat files Docstorage / sims files so that can be moved over easily Solus - i generally just tend to reinstall it from scratch and push it out again to all the existing clients
