Hi All, Signing off as me - I'm moving to the darkside (the LEA team) as of today and I'm not sure about their policy on posting. I will be back though in another name in my personal capacity. Peter

@witch As my brother said to me at my mothers funeral last month "we are the grandparents now"

As others have said but also do some long days with a pack before hand to get the body use to it. I did the pennine way some years ago (without this wusie carrying of bags from place to place system). I thought I had done enough walking before hand but the first 3 days were hard.

Yes to the above but MDT is a far easier soulution to this and makes deployable images a doddle to create.

Importing Sims CSV into Active Directory
Hedghog replied to abillybob's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Depending on the server version you are using there is apowershell addition for active directory. In this there is a commandlet for installing new users in bulk and quite a lot of resources out there for helping you on your way. Be aware though the cammandlet syntax is very exact any typos and it will fail. Active Directory Cmdlets in Windows PowerShell this is a link to the technet pages for the above -
Yes - but don't be upset when you first start and nothing activates as Win7, for example, requires 25 different clients to request activation before it will activate any client. As soon as No26 requests activation all the rest just do it. (Don't ask me why I could never find out). Office 2010 requires an office activation module to be loaded then 5 clients before automatic activation so I would do some reading from the microsoft site just to understand the various querks of the system.

Yep had one of those the other day - receptionist (bless her) called me up. I said ok - ask the guy on the phone which one of the 350 or so PCs we have has the virus. The call was abruptly terminated.

How can Microsoft compete with this licensing?
Hedghog replied to bcsdtech's topic in Licensing Questions
I'm not sure how licencing works in the states and I am in the UK:- we get an EES licence which is based on the number of full time teaching staff in the school and included in that is access to 0ffice 365. If we moved to 1:1 for the students it would have no impact on the licencing charges only if we employ more staff does it change. Hope this helps -
The early Dilberts were done while Scott Adams was still employed by one of the Bell companies. As a manager in a big telecomms company that was taking its mangement lead from the states at the time I saw many parallels which left me laughing/crying many times.

Hi, Ever since our CISCO wireless kit was installed we seem to be having a problem with laptops failing to authenticate seemingly at random. I'll try to explain the setup: - CISCO APs (enterprise level Kit) CISCO controlers and Radius server remotely located in LEA on adifferent domain working across a trust to us for LDAP queries. Laptops configured to use PEAP authentication with computer information. Laptops using 11g only with win XP When I ask the network guys at county for the error messages it seems the LDAP query is timing out. This continues until I plug the laptop into a wired connection and log onto the domain then it seems to find the laptop and everything works for a while then the same happens again. I've just come back from some time away to find 8 of our science laptops in this state - just reconnecting them to the domain seems to remind the server that they are still around. Any suggestions

First check, I don't know if this is the same in windows 7 but there are two ways I think you can tackle this with group policies. The first is to enforce policy processing before logon and the second is to prevent logon if profile insn't present. I guess someone will be along shortly to improve on this answer

I think if your domain name inclues the .local suffix there should be an entry for DC=local

Standalone Namespace. Cant seem to work out what it does?
Hedghog replied to dany2010's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
From my reading around this subject (MDT only) and some experimentation I believe that the best way to set MDT up is to co-locate it with WDS and DHCP. This way all the components to make it work are in one box so to speak. Do you have distributed DHCP/WDS? if you have I'm out of my depth. Hope this helps. -
Hi, Depends on wether you have the MSIs or not. If you have the MSI group policies do a very handy job of deploying software. If not there are several 3d party solutions about and I'm sure someone who uses one will appear soon.

In plain English what does "Startup policy processing wait time" mean???
Hedghog replied to kennysarmy's topic in Windows 7
If I remember correctly the wait time is there to allow the policy to completley down load before it is processed. There is a danger that if the policy has not fully downloaded when processing sarts you will be left with an incomplete policy or at worst the policy will fail altogether. I do think though that this was related to network issues rather than PC issues. I suppose that if you have a very fast PC and a slow network this work make the situation worse. -
The way I do it (and many of the articles point to this) is to run a sysprep and capture task sequence booted from the network with a base boot image and generic OS load (plus drivers), then build the reference PC as you want it. Next navigate to the deployment share and run "litetouch.vbs" this will sysprep and capture your image. If this dos'nt work repost and I will re-run my capture system to see if I've missed anything.

Hi Thanks to everyone who replied. Unfortunatly it appears that The LEA have barred any but themselves from doing SIMS backups so I have left it with them to ensure we have an uptodate backup.

Hi All, I need to know the steps involved in backing up our SIMS/FMS database. I would ask capita but the LEA hold the licence so they won't talk to me. The reason I am asking is our SIMS server is hanging by a thread and I need the confidence that we can rebuild SIMS if it fails (I know the LEA are supposed to do this but a school close by has just lost everything) We are running server 2008 R2. Any help/instructions would be very much appreciated

Toshiba Satellite Pro wireless card detected but not working
Hedghog replied to JackCPickup's topic in Hardware
Hi, I have had this problem as well - Fn + F8 is the antenna switch but the two reasons I have had for this are either the network card has failed or a (suprise suprise) microsoft hardware up date has come through and stopped the card. The only way to fix the last scenario is to go to the realtek site and down load a new driver. It was interesting that the latest driver, the last time it happend, was published just after the Microsoft update wen tout. The first issue can only be tested by changing over a working lan card for the possible faulty one. Hope this helps -
Happy Birthday But I don't know about the "ripe" old I think there's a few of us on here who might lay claim to that (my youngest is older then you, she would kill me if I say by how much) but have a good day.

Hi, Does any one have any views on using RDP on an iPad(possibly an Android as well) with windows 8. I am thinking of setting up a terminal server with windows 8 as the OS to enable students get access to some of the curriculum resources based on the main network. I think I've got the security angle covered but the RDP client is challenging me. I would like the touch system to work if possible. @SYNACK has suggested that the FX would work but now I'm into testing mode. Cheers
