  2. This is very interesting. We changed out a bunch of Cisco gear that was working fine (layer 8 decision) for some new Ruckus gear. Suddenly the laptops took 15 minutes to log in. Switch back to the Cisco APs and everything works fine. The only solution that seemed to work was to upgrade the XP clients to Windows 7. I'm definitely going to have to dig into this a bit further...

  4. For testing wireless you should only test with the clients you will be using. There's no point in testing with an Atheros card if all of your laptops are Broadcomm. Also if you are testing for 1x1 devices (ipads, etc.) don't test with a multiple antenna card. Test with an iPad. Test to meet real-world expectations.
  5. Sorry I was mistaken. We're actually running 9.4.2.0 build 29. We had been testing the DPSK self-activation back in October and had issues with OSX 10.8.1. The provisioning file would fail with an Applescript error. Ruckus at the time admitted a known issue with 10.8.1 and kept the ticket open until they sent us a beta release of 9.4.2.0 build 29. Prior to that OSX was updated to 10.8.2 and the issue persisted. The 9.4.2.0 build 29 version resolved the Applescript error and everything works on Safari and OSX 10.8.2 for us. The only "error" is a security warning for the activation page certificate because it's a cert issued by our Active Directory Cert. Services and the MacBook isn't a domain member so it does not trust the cert. The machine we're testing on is a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.2 and Safari 6.0.2.

  7. What code are you running on the ZD1100? We have hotspot activation working on OSX 10.8.2 with no issues.
  8. Definitely not on 802.11g access points. Cisco AP's will support large numbers of clients, but it's a simple math problem. You have 25 clients, and 54Mbps of throughput, at half duplex. Will they all connect? Yes. Will the performance be satisfactory? No.
  9. I've had nothing but issues with ChannelFly. I currently am running an unreleased version of code from their support group to try and pinpoint the issues. So far it seems pretty unreliable. Cisco's CleanAir was much better.
  10. We've had Ruckus gear fail on us miserably. Really strange inexplicable login problems. On a lark we swapped out the Ruckus 7962 for a Cisco 3502i and the issues disappeared. We're still scratching our heads as to why. Same authentication/encryption model, same SSID even.

  12. Apple just posted the numbers in their 10/23 event. The iMac is the #1 selling desktop and the Macbook Pro is the #1 selling notebook.
  13. OSX has outgrown the Windows market for 6 years straight, by the end of June 2012 the Mac outgrew the PC market by 700%, and the Mac is the #1 selling Desktop AND Notebook in the US. Where is MS dominating again?
  14. Without details around who did the testing, what was used in the test (hardware, software version, client, chipset, driver, environment, measurement software, etc.) it's worth absolutely nothing.
  15. No contract or product registration required for current generation 2K and 3K switches, just a valid CCO login. Check the data sheets, etc. for your particular model. As an example: 2960 and 2960-S Series Edit: This was Cisco's response to HP's "lifetime warranty" on ProCurve switches. Limited Lifetime Warranty and free software. The LLW just means you have to be the original owner, and it doesn't cover the power supply past 5 years. Otherwise, they'll RMA/cross-ship a new unit *without* any support contract with 5 business day coverage. It's certainly not the way a lot of people are used to Cisco software, but it's been around for a couple of years. I know I first heard of it at Cisco Live (US) in 2010. Obviously this doesn't cover your Cat6K's or Nexus gear but access-layer hardware is covered.
  16. Incorrect. All Cisco Desktop Switching Business Unit switches (2K, 3K) come with IOS upgrades at no additional cost, for the lifetime of the product. This includes both fixed and stackable versions.
  17. Also check the patch panel. I had a similar issue and the panel was only rated for Cat5, not 5e.
  18. As most have pointed out it really depends on what is occupying the vlan(s). Some would argue that any single vlan should be isolated to a single switch.
  19. Don't bother paying for any kind of switch port mapping software. You can easily find out the IP and MAC associated with any switchport with builtin tools. Your router/gateway/L3switch will show you the MAC address from it's ARP table, and your switches will show you which port that MAC belongs to. On Cisco gear it's this easy: show arp (on the router) show mac-address-table (on the switch) In this case doing that may be a waste of time anyway, since you may be dealing with a virtual machine or a wireless device. Your trace will point to a trunk connecting a VM host or a wireless access point.
  20. I'm not completely sure about your switches, but on Cisco gear the load-balancing is a global setting rather than per-port. I would recommend picking one method - probably IP since you have some virtualized infrastructure, and use that everywhere.
  21. Do you have Band Select enabled for this WLAN? If you do I'd be curious to see what happens if you disable it - would the Chromebook pick the closest AP or still try the 5.0Ghz even if it was further away. Client issues like this are always tricky just because you don't know what magic sauce the manufacturer has in their wireless drivers. 99% of the association decisions are made by the client, all you can do is offer the best signal possible.

  23. Hash mode allows you to specify the load-balancing model for the port group. Depending on what you are connecting via LACP - you may need to hash by source MAC, or source IP. When using LACP to connect to VMware servers for example, you need to load balance using source IP or you can't load balance at all, because all VM's appear from the same source MAC (the VMware host).
  24. What AP's are you using? Many AP's have a channel selection feature that tries to force clients over to 5.0Ghz if they are dual-band. The hardware on the Chromebook might also be set to prefer 5.0Ghz over 2.4Ghz.
  25. There's clearly a problem with the pub's wireless router, not your computer.
