Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Every version of Windows 10 seems to fix one problem and bring 10 new ones! I updated to 1703 and now get the error 0x8024401c every time I try to run Update. Seriously, what are MS doing with this POS operating system! We've rolled out 10 to about 40% of our PCs and I have zero faith it in anymore.
sparkeh Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Not again Use WSUS? This a communication issue: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/3090184/how-to-troubleshoot-software-update-scan-failures-in-system-center-2012-configuration-manager ( I know that this is for SCCM but I think that error is related to WSUS).
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 We do use WSUS generally but not for some admin/text PCs, which is where the error is happening. Worked ok in 1607 ironically.
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 And another weird thing with 1703 is that the 'Edit post/Reply with Quote' etc buttons on this page no longer work - in IE,Chrome or Firefox! What a mess.
Michael Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 If you implement WSUS, you don't have to roll out every patch or upgrade to Windows 10. I don't have a single machine running Redstone 2 yet, still all Redstone 1. Likelihood is I'll have a look at Redstone 3 which has improved OneDrive functionality later this year. Machines wouldn't be upgraded either, they'd be re-imaged as new, as the 'upgrade' path for Windows 10 is ill thought out and very messy. 1
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Yeah we use WSUS for most PCs, but leave a handful of admin PCs to be done manually. Logic being that a dodgy update will still leave us with some working PCs to get on and fix it! 1703 is awful. Can't roll back anymore either.
Michael Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 What parts of it are particularly bad? I've heard of some users experiencing blank icons (no labels), but whether or not that was Impero related was unclear.
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Updates don't work, explorer crashes a lot, random freezes, above problem with certain sits in all browsers, plus all the previous bugs and issues from the versions before!
Simcfc73 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 My explorer is awful on 10.0.15063.332. TBH there are a lot of issues on my desktop machine even after reinstalling from scratch, I put it down to installing the creator edition instead of reinstalling from scratch. Its worse when I RDP in, all the office suite crashes. Edge seems to fail a lot and so does explorer.. I have to kill the processes 5 or 6 times a day. The rest of the machines seem fine but I am on LTSB. I move my WSUS to a new box and that fixed loads of issues with updating, probably a coinkydink but it helped me loads. I have nice green ticks almost everywhere.
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 I've found the rollout of W10 to be the messiest, most inconsistent and most frustrating rollout of any OS in my 25 years of working ICT - and I used to install Windows 3.11 from floppy disks! Windows Update is so unreliable now its probably worth forgetting about it, especially as the new way W10 works is basically releasing a whole new (buggier!) OS every few months anyway. I've ditched WSUS in some primaries and just set the W10 PCs to auto update. Needless to say that doesn't work either.....
Sheridan Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 On the same subject, what happened to the update logs, now you have to extract them with powershell and end up with garbage like this: 1601/01/01 00:00:00.0000000 268 5500 Unknown( 285): GUID=a3b718ad-b475-3547-b144-d6799a426ed5 (No Format Information found). 1601/01/01 00:00:00.0000000 268 3568 Unknown( 204): GUID=a3b718ad-b475-3547-b144-d6799a426ed5 (No Format Information found). 1601/01/01 00:00:00.0000000 268 3568 Unknown( 34): GUID=7b9bf239-47b9-3688-3a9e-14f09f262608 (No Format Information found). 1601/01/01 00:00:00.0000000 268 3568 Unknown( 38): GUID=50a5ef43-b2b6-3c52-145b-a386d8769665 (No Format Information found). What am I supposed to do with that information then MS? I have 20 PCs stuck at the usual 0% downloading all with logs full of useless lines like the above!
Michael Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I know with Server 2016 (when hosting WSUS), you need to 'Specify intranet Microsoft update service location' and populate all three fields (even if they're the same), otherwise Windows 10 devices fail to download updates from WSUS.
Tefters Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Windows 10 as a quick summarisation is going down the sh*tter in terms of corporate and education use. Every major release introduces more fluffy cr*p that no-one really wants and makes unnecessary changes like pushing more things from control panel into the new interactive settings app which is awful. Windows server 2016 isn't much better either, the extra cpu overhead that it uses in comparison to 2012 r2 is a piss take and the Remote Desktop / Remote App solution while a lot easier to setup and manage is unstable as hell in comparison too. As Michael said, never upgrade! It's asking for a world of hurt. I am re-imaging fully every other year however redoing my base image every major release and using it for rebuilds where needed. And don't get me started about Office 2016 and it's cr*p patching hierarchy... Why MS can't just release CU patches for office or the apps is beyond me, instead a new office build has a ton of patches to install... 1
maark Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Have spent weeks on windows 10 what with mdt issues, start menu flaky, apps you can't get rid of, profiles etc. etc. Still not happy with it. Each version of windows gets worse.
Sheridan Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 I'm come to the conclusion now that Windows Update is fundamentally broken. Used W7 and WSUS for years and it worked beatifully. Now I seem to spend way too much of my time working out why one version or another of W10 isn't updating. Same thing every day, of course the logs are utterly useless now so I can't fix this. Back to W7 for that set until the hardward is replaced! Are you letting Windows Update update your device drivers ??? That's crazy!
Sheridan Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 Nope, I'm not! Only security and critical updates for Windows and Office but Windows Update doesn't do what I tell it to do anymore!
Ausy Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Every time I think about going to 10 I see topics like this. Shame on you Microsoft!!
Sheridan Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 To think we used to mock Vista, yet we seem to accept this mess! W10 is Vista with a new start menu.
Michael Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I don't have any of these problems to be honest. There were issues with earlier versions of Redstone 1, but anything after November 2016 has been solid.
Sheridan Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 This is what is so frustrating. Bog standard installs of 1607 and 1703 joined to a domain, connected to WSUS and failing all over the shop. Many people having problems, many aren't. So what am I doing wrong!
Michael Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 1607, then manually install the November 2016 fix or later addresses the issue with WSUS. Including this as part of your base image makes your life easier!
TwistedHelixis Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Cant get the 1703 update to install on my home pc. Just says failed to install. On the school side, I have a mix of WSUS and none WSUS and all seem perfectly fine.
Wubbalubbadub Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I too am having the windows update issue on windows 10 (1703) I am also having an issue, where the start menu redirection doesn't work on first login. But it does on the second login? Any ideas!?
Simcfc73 Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I do the following Install the base image via WDS Deploy kb3199986, kb3199209 and KB3201860 then reboot then deploy the latest cum update all with PDQ Deploy. TBH most of my woes went away when I reinstalled my WSUS server, I'd stuck it on a VM and put the updates onto a shared drive which I don't think it liked and hung like crazy.... I had ticked the device driver updates which ruined it also. Its now running on a ickle microserver happily.
