[sims] Sims.net on a Whitboard PC!

Hi,

I have a quick query.

 

Sims.net is run from a network share. (S Drive). Teachers have to have virtually full access to this folder (Add, remove........)

 

At times 'They' leave the p.c's logged in and leave the classroom.. leaving the students to access the S Drive...Not Good...

 

What is the best practice? Without having a very short sleep set up on the workstations? or shopping their hands off!

We've set the machine to lock after 15min inactivity and made this a disciplinary act in our data protection policy. Not sure there is much else you can do.

hide the s drive sims needs it but do the staff need to see it?

I tried that, but then they bleat about the machines switching off in lessons. IMHO the only solution would be to bet SMT backing and then report every time you find an instance. I've never managed to get anyone to agree to this, though!

 

I've always been tempted to "deface" any machines left unlocked and unsupervised, but have never had the bottle.

ive "emptied" someones user area before as they were a repeat reoffender and 1 day found 4 pcs side by side logged in as him

This is not true. People performing specific roles (Exams Officer, certain admin staff) need more access, but a generic classroom teacher mostly needs "read" rights. A generic teacher also doesn't need a mapped drive - modify the SIMS.ini and connect.ini for those people to use UNC paths.

You bring it up as a training issues and then (following training) as a disciplinary issue. If you've got an AUP (you have, right?), ensure it's in there.

My setup:

 

Staff need Read access to:

 

S:\SIMS\

S:\SIMS\Setups

S:\SIMS\Documentation

 

Some administrative staff require read/write access for CTF transfer and Census transfer:

 

Attendance letters.

S:\SIMS\Attend

 

CTF Transfer:

S:\SIMS\STAR\CTFIN

S:\SIMS\STAR\CTFOUT

 

Census Files (Only the Census Admin!):

S:\SIMS\STAR\ASCOUT

 

Workforce Census Files (Only the Census Admin!):

S:\SIMS\STAR\SWCOUT

 

Staff who are using older SIMS software require read/write access to the specific directories in the S drive.

It just setup in group policy preferences. Setup a map drive and click the hidden check box.

We don't auto-lock PCs, but we can do this on a per-user basis for repeat offenders. Doesn't have to be a blanket policy. Data Protection is not just your responsibility, it's theirs too - maybe they need to be reminded of this?

Have being playing with the following reg.. But it removes more than the S Drive?!!
