LosOjos Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I consider myself and advanced PC user, yet when trying out Win8 on my laptop, I had to Google how to open a program I had just installed! Ridiculous OS. To the uninitiated: you have to right click in a blank space on the Metro/Start menu, which pops up a toolbar at the bottom of the screen containing a single option, "all Apps". Clicking that takes you to an otherwise hidden part of Metro containing an enormous list of not only apps but any shortcuts within them Metro can launch... in a horizontally scrolling layout. Awful.

Just installed programs are automatically pinned the to right of the metro UI though? or at least every app I have installed has been.

Not for me! All my Metro UI shows is those big chuffing tiles from various Microsoft programs; anything non-Microsoft isn't showing up automatically.

Weird, I literally did an apple quicktime update (using updater) last night and the icons were there pinned as expected after it completed install.

It really is not that bad. A little clumsy on a desktop but great on a phone or tablet. 1

Although it's a bit variable, pretty much everything I install ends up on Metro, even some of the piffly "extras". finding apps...even installing apps, finding the c: drive...I dont like it The first 2, I'm assuming you mean Store Apps as opposed to programs (which is no different to previous Windows). If so, blame Apple for making everyone want a closed ecosystem. As for the C: drive: Windows+E.

That's the point though - I am using a desktop, so I don't want a UI better suited to a touch screen device! I've said all along it'd be great on a touch screen, but I and the vast majority of the rest of the computer using world still use a mouse, and the humble mouse and Windows 8 do not mix. Install it from scratch and stuff just shows up on the home screen, if not it is one search away, if this was Apple you people would be going off about how it only took one search to use it and it was easy/intuitive. I hated having to search for everything when Ubuntu did it months back and I hate it now in Windows 8 - I can't speak for the Apple crowd. My memory is awful, but I can usually find what I'm looking for in the start menu as I'm prompted to remember when I actually see the name of the program I'm looking for - having to search lends me no such prompt. SYNACK Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 (edited) It's not so bad on a laptop with one screen, the core of W8 is superior for efficiency and speed but UI wise W7 is better on multiple screens, you can use the W8 start menu replacements but you loose a bunch of the actual desktop functionality with a base install. That is why we are not rushing it out to desktops. Any tablets we have however are being W8ted ASAP as it is really good for that. They are both fine as OSs, uniformity is a false economy and the benefits of W8 on tablets outweight the 'fun' of 'teaching' staff the differences between the two. W8 does prompt you with the names too, Windows Key then start typing, it will happily bring up a list of programs that match. Edited January 9, 2013 by SYNACK
