Extend system partition

Hi I'm running win2k server with RM CC3 installed and I want to know if it is possible to extend the system partition c: (which is currently 8GB). I have 21GB of unallocated space right next to it. Have posted a screen of my drive structure and its the system partition c: on Disk 0 that I would like to extend, the c: on disk 1 is just a mirror. What I dont want to do is wipe the drive and then have to totally reinstall win2k server and CC3 from scratch plus all of the service releases.

System partitions cannot be easily extended - but make sure you have a recent backup if the third-party app screws it up.

 

You would be better just shifting stuff over onto other drives, eg. D: or G:. To find out what's taking up a lot of space I recommend using something like Space Monger. The Pagefile was the first thing to go on another drive on our CC3 servers, and we found the IIS logs took up over 1GB of space as well.

Which begs the question why on earth did RM have it as 8gb in the first place? This kinds of questions have cropped up so many times on the communities forums. I know RM (because they know they done a boo boo on this) have now made it 12Gb on new installs which is still less for my liking since the HDD sizes now a days are so big so give it 15Gb at the very least. This way people should shouldn't have to restort to using 3rd party tools and if they screw it up RM probably will say its not supported malarky!

Yes exactly, that's what we've been thinking and have read exactly the same threads on the RM forum. It really is stupid... even 20GB would be getting somewhere... :?

It's historical. Windows NT 4 is limited to a maximum Primary partition of 7.8G/8Gig. If the Primary partition (to which it may be installed) exceeds 7.8G/8Gig then there is danger that critical files will end up beyond the 7.8/8Gig barrier; and if this happens then it will not boot.

How about taking an image of it, resizing the partition then putting the image bk. I have done this on more than 1 occasion. I did it in a BartPE live CD though.

I'd agree with this. I ran into the problem about 2 years back. After deleting/moving files around space seemed to be ok. Found some lovely memory dumps on a few servers I supported at the time.

 

I haven't moved the swap file yet but I'm considering doing it this summer.

Oooh, make sure you mark the partition as active if you're re-partitioning else it will never boot. Thats an easy mistake to make.

Space monger found quite alot of c*ap on there. The biggest waste seems to be all of the duplicate files in the all of the different JRE versions that have been installed, but not removed from the prog files, recalimed over a gigi from those. But, I would still like to extend the partition. Can anyone else verify that taking a true image (suggested by craiglay), resizing the partition then putting the image onto that would work?
