elsiegee40 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I was listening to a program on Radio 4 last night where they interviewed a professor who is an expert on Mayan culture. He said that the latest thinking from the academics is that the actual date is December 24th, not today. He didn't think the world would end, it was just a new calendar cycle would start. So if we're still here on Christmas morning, the world didn't end!

X-13 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Thanks for advice! It's rather difficult to find UK dvds here, unfirtunately. But I usually buy them abroad or ask relatives and friends to buy ones if they travel in other countries Amazon and Play ship for Russia. You may have to pay a bit extra for shipping though.
jinnantonnixx Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) Nothing like changing the goal posts! The Jeane Dixon effect. It's strange how this prediction is so specific, despite the craziness of the predicted event. It tends to invite face-seeking eggs. I suspect that a routine Mayan calender event has been built up into something it's not. A bit like saying the year 2000 would bring some vague cataclysm or other. It's just an arbitrary calendar event. Most predictions only work after the event. Postdictions? The nonsense around Nostradamus for example. Follows maintain that somehow his predictions fit perfectly when you look back before the current time. Well, many vague things can be made to fit. Oddly enough though, they tend to be a bit vague and wooly when considering future events. Of course, if you're also a subscriber to the theory of b-time (block universe), then you'll know the world has already ended (and also not yet been formed). Just try not to look surprised. http://www.nikhef.nl/pub/services/biblio/bib_KR/sciam14327034.pdf <<<< a terrific article by Paul Davies But I digest. Edited December 21, 2012 by jinnantonnixx
Garacesh Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Bonus - the world hasn't ended but more importantly I just got a hug and a kiss off the most attractive woman in the school.... Grats and all. Last kiss I got from a member of staff was when she'd dragged me to dance at the Christmas bash and I stood there with my best 'not amused' face until the song ended. I can't dance. Ah well, I'm sure the bottle of JD I just received from the ICT Manager will help me through my despair
tech_guy Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Whoops - I'm in deep doggy do - just ate a cake that was left in the staffroom - apparently it was someone's prize.....! :-(
X-13 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Whoops - I'm in deep doggy do - just ate a cake that was left in the staffroom - apparently it was someone's prize.....! :-( End of the world via teacher rage. [Assuming it's a teacher.] I totally didn't see that coming.
korifugi Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Hmmm, Quarter past 1 and I'm still waiting - these chestnuts aren't gonna roast themselves...
Fleetwood Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I wonder what date they'll announce next, then. *sigh* EDIT: *double-sigh* Oh, so it's the 24th now? Ha! I will personally end the world myself (GOLDENEYE!) if all I'm going to hear every single bloody day is "It's today, oh wait no it's today, oh wait no. Definitely today now!" -_-
tmcd35 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 All I can say is it was a good thing I decided to do the job interview rather than go out on a rape and pillage spree. (And I'm sure the interviewee thinks the same since we offered him the job.)
mthomas08 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Who knows, maybe the calendar was their version of an Christmas Advent Calendar Minus the chocolate.

Sirbendy Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 One of our kids just got me.."don't worry Sir, the world won't end. The date on my yoghurt says 2013, and they wouldn't put that on if there wasn't going to be one..". Yep, serious face and all. Bless 'em, it says it all. 1

tmcd35 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Oh! The Christmas concert has just started in the hall - I now wish the world had ended
Fleetwood Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) 1147 Centigrade is 2096.6 Fahrenheit #dailymailfail *twitches* EDIT: I just had a text from my younger brother (who broke up for the holidays yesterday) which says: 'Does this mean Mum will tell me off for eating all the chocolates in my advent calendar? They said the world was going to end today so I thought I'd eat the rest and not let them go to waste." I want to smirk and laugh at the same time. HELP. Edited December 21, 2012 by Fleetwood

CHR1S Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Here's an idea, what if the world really ended and the afterlife isn't what its all cracked up to be! 1
Rawns Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Here's an idea, what if the world really ended and the afterlife isn't what its all cracked up to be! My afterlife of beer, babes, BBQ's and beaches WILL be all it's cracked up to be!
Fleetwood Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Here's an idea, what if the world really ended and the afterlife isn't what its all cracked up to be! As long as Gene Hunt was there I wouldn't give a rats bottom. "And Ray, if you come in 'ere again dressed like a Maths teacher; I will paint your balls the colour of hazelnuts and inform a bag of squirrels that winter's coming!"
