Windows live movie maker crashing

I'm tring to get Windows Live Movie Maker installed and running on a Win7 32 bit PC. It installs, and will run, but as soon you play a video it crashes, with an event log entry referencing MSVCRT.dll

 

I've trawled online, and tried a few things but am still gettgin no further with it. Has anyone come across this problem and succesfully resolved it?

Have you tried re-installing it?

I'd try a reinstall as well, maybe see if there's an updated version to it.

I've also found on our network that WLMM just doesn't work very well at all. When the kids try to import a video from their network drive, it just crashes. But it seems to be OK when they use a local USB drive. Might be worth trying that?

We've tried re-installing

Running cccleaner, then reinstalling

Installing C++ runtimes

trying with just video and no sound

 

In each case we have tried using the sample videos that come with Windows, so we were running from a local drive

 

I'm tearing my hair out, and the class teacher is getting very frustrated

What type of profiles are you using? Are they working on projects on network drives? We have had issues with WLMM, I made some tweaks to profiles (we're on super mandatory) and it seems to work okay now.

We haven't got as far as saving the project, however their home drive is a network drive.

When students logon they get a local profile created which is then removed by delprof2 when they logoff

We found that working anything from network drives/shares would just kill it. Any time it is used now we tell them to run from USB only as it seems to work better.

 

We have also started only using MovieMaker 2.6 which works well on windows 7 instead of using the live version and have found it to be much more stable.

We had something similar here (granted, with Serif Movieplus, not WMM) where it turned out the problem was importing not 3rd party codecs properly. Perhaps something similar? Do your machines use CCCP/K-Lite?

We gave up with it and installed an old version of movie maker (2.6) which works fine. Created a GPO and pushed it out across the network no issues. Works fine on Windows 7 and older machines too

i just created a folder on c say c:\scratch give authenticated users rights to it then add a subst h: c:\scratch as a startup script gives them local space withou accessing c drive folder structure
