Which models are £600?

 

xj-a130 and xj-m130 but I have seen the 135 for less than £650. Get in touch with your supply managers. One of ours often comes to us saying "casio have a great offer on, they are now £605, if you buy in the next few days...". Whether casio really do have an offer on or not I don't know... or care.

 

iirc normal price of around £625.

We have a handful of XJA130's for probably getting on for 2 years now & they are bright still & colours still seem fine. Issues:one had what we thought was a remote fault,sent it back no fault found, turned out to be florescent lights in that room interfered with the remote, they have to be off for it to work!

Just have another that needs to go back with what I think is the classic DLP failure issue, white/black specs over the image from DLP chip fault, still in warranty so that should get sorted.

Whilst I appreciate cost is important, nobody has mentioned the fact that conventional projectors with MERCURY CORE LAMPS are really bad fo the environment, so whilst saving money initially by buying this type of technology over Mecury Free Laser LED, they are creating a bigger problem for everyone in the future. !!

 

Also the simple maths.............

 

Conventional Projector Cost. =£400 (average)

Minimum amount of lamps over 20,000 hours (if it lasts that long) = 5

Minimum cost of 5 Lamps = £1000

Total = £1400.

 

Laser Led Projector Cost = £650 (avarage)

Lamps...................er it does have one & has a 20,000 light source warranty.

Total = £650.............& no MERCURY added into the environment !

 

The other inconvenience with conventional projectors is having to actually physically replace the lamps every 4000 hours (remove from installed position to carry this out) & then go through all the correct procedures of disposing of the old Mercury Core Lamp (check it out)

 

In conclusion, its a NO BRAINER !!

We have some Casio's and they are simply not reliable enough. We have opted not to use them in the new building next year.

 

@FN-GM Some more info would be appreciated. What issues have you come across?

I wouldnt say the math is that simple

Interestingly Casio now only have a 5 year warranty on the unit and only a 10,000 hour warranty on the light source.

Seems like the claims they made intially are slowly getting less and less.

 

plus single DLP projectors really are not great for education.

Hi there, the expected life time of the Casio light source is 20,000 hours. The warranty on the light source has always been 10,000 hours. This January we upped our hardware warranty from 3 years to 5 years meaning that the projector had a fully wrapped 5 year / 10,000 hour warranty.

 

I am keen to understand and try and assist with the issues surrounding reliability. Please let me know more detail.

Just wanted to take the chance to cover off the pixel issue. When you see dead pixels in the image (could be black / green / red / blue). This is a failure of the DLP chip which was acknowledged by Texas instruments who provide this chip to all manufacturers. Texas Instruments are covering the cost of replacement parts for Casio allowing us to repair the units and return them to customers as quickly as possible. This is in no way a failure of the light source inside the Casio unit. This issue is actually around 2 years old however we are still seeing the occasional failure which as highlighted earlier we are repairing and returning to the customer as quickly as possible.

Regarding life span. We have a bar in which Casio projectors (specifically the XJ-A145) have been running for 13,000 hours. These projectors are still bright and vibrant providing an excellent viewing experience for customers. If you want to see them in situ. Yates Wine Lodge, High Street, Bedford, Bedfordshire.

Recently we have been buying BenQ MX660's for our Maths Department as they are going down the route of using an iPad with Apple TV's for streaming images instead of forking out £600+ on document viewers/visualizers. So in turn we are slowly upgrading projectors to have HDMI connectivity to cover ourselves in case other departments want to do the same. Currently have 3 departments with iPads hooked up to Apple TV's.

 

So if I was you, I'd purchase HDMI ready projectors. :)

The servive has been really good though. Replacements arrived fast.

Can I ask how the units are mounted? Are they in cages? Also, colour issue. Could you define colour issue?

I thought that had been addressed? We originally bought A130 models until our supplier suggested the M130 due to the over-heating, but I was under the impression that the A130 overheating had been resolved - perhaps @philclark could comment...

Firstly, length of warranty does not always equate to lifespan of product.

 

Secondly, even if it does transpire that the Casio projectors only run for 10,000 hours not the advertised 20,000 hours, the maths is still in their favour (pasting and editing RA4ME's above calculations):

You then have the other benefits. RA4ME has already pointed out one environmental benefit, another is that they are lower energy; additionally, there is the risk when a bulb goes that you will no longer be able to replace it and might have to replace the projector itself, at which point you have potential issues with lamp position, bracket type, power cable type, etc. When you then factor in the zero-maintenance of the Casio and that the image doesn't degrade over time, you have a very appealing product.

Zombie thread alert! I would have thought that the A130 (narrow slim design) was more prone to heat issues due to small size and smaller fans. The larger M130's have larger quieter fans and would be less thermally stressed.

 

We had one XJM130 fail (would not power exit standby mode at all) and was reapired under warranty. There was also a note with the repair advsing not to use mounting screws longer than 10mm as long screws can hit the PCB underneath as the screw mount holes were (now fixed?) open.

 

I would re-iterate that as Casio completely redesigned Projectors from the ground up there are many non-standard things about these projectors.

 

Namely

 

*Lens of possosite side to most projectors which makes retrofitting harder

*smaller M3 mounting screws which are not included in some universal mounting kits (RA)

*Unusual IR frequency used which can be blocked by IR smartboards

*Clover leaf IEC connector (C5 rather than more comon C14)required. Makes retrofitting harder.

I would say I still think Casio Laser/LED lightsource projectors are worth the extra initial outlay for the future convienience and cost saving due to not having to change lamps and remove/clean out filters. Although you still have to clean the external vents with a brush or vacuum occasionally. Would recommend every 6 months at least.

Still not convinced the maths works out.

 

You can buy modern lamp projectors with 10'000hr lamplife for around the £300.00 mark. It's also possible to get a 5yr hardware warranty. These tend to offer higher brightness and IMO better image quality than lamp-free models.

 

Wouldn't want to buy an expensive projector that’s potentially going to be replaced with a touch-screen in a few years anyway.

 

Would definitely consider lamp-free for school-halls etc where changing lamps is a real issue.

True, and over the course of those 10 000 hours, the image will fade. LEDs don't (or so they claim, it is too early for me to definitively confirm this, but our 2-year-old ones still look very good.

The maths on the Casio models has changed with the XJ-V1 Core model, which is only £430. It also, at long last, uses M4 mounting holes, and even better actually has 4 of them so you can choose which three of the four you'll use. They're brilliantly bright @ 2700 lumens and I am just adding up how many of them I'm going to buy, having put one up over the half term to test.

 

Still a silly power connector instead of a normal kettle lead, but other than that they're the holy grail of data projectors.

Fair enough. Dont have any IPADs right now but see your point. I guess if VGA gets phased out over the next couple of years then HDMI will be in. I already have some Ultrabooks which only have HDMI and you have to buy a HDMI to VGA adaptor.

 

 

VGA does not carry audio, whereas HDMI carries both video and audio signals, saves you messing around with RCA inputs..

Hi There,

 

Wanted to address a few of the points raised in Alis_Klar post;

 

Overheating issues sometimes caused by cages and dust build up in cages, can also be caused by an internal fault which is not actually overheating but shows as Temp light.

 

*Lens of possosite side to most projectors which makes retrofitting harder

 

Some projectors have lens on the opposite side to us but the majority are the same so it all depends on which projectors you are repacing (RA Technology offer a mount which allows lateral movement so you don't need to move brackets)

 

*smaller M3 mounting screws which are not included in some universal mounting kits (RA)

 

M3 screws only used on XJ-A series, all subsequent series are M4 (it is true that M3 screw are not always available in universal bracket bundles but these screws are available at minimal cost. Screws should be less than 10mm otherwise there is danger of damage within the unit.

 

*Unusual IR frequency used which can be blocked by IR smartboards

 

There is some clash with Smartboards which can make the projector freeze. Smart did not check all frequencies when bringing in their new boards so despite our communications with them regarding this they have not changed. Easy fix is to cover the front IR sensor with a small sticker. Crude but solves the problem straight away.

 

*Clover leaf IEC connector (C5 rather than more comon C14)required. Makes retrofitting harder.

Isn't HDMI getting phased out in favour of Displayport though? I know on the GTX 970 I just bought it has 3 Displayport interfaces and only one HDMI

HDMI isn't going to be phased out anytime soon since it is too widespread.

 

HDMI 1.4 will be superseded by HDMI 2.0 however to enable devices to output 4k UHD content at > 60Hz.

 

DisplayPort will continue to be used on computers although manufacturers might switch from using mini DisplayPort to the USB Type-C connector since it is much more versatile.
