Disney buys LucasFilm for $4 billion, promises Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015

I can't work out if this is a good or bad thing. I think there is still plenty of milage in the Star Wars 'universe' and it's an immersive world and culture that I'd love to see explored more fully. I'm not sure Disney is the right one to do it, but I'd rather see the franchise in the hands of a powerhouse like Disney, than fizzle into nothing or be mired in mediocrity (lets be fair, Episodes 1 thru 3 were a bit trite). Episode 6 pretty much tied up the loose ends of the Galactic Empire - Both Vader and Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine are now dead, and the impression at the end of Episode 6 is that the control of Galactic Empire has crumbled and oppressed systems are rejoycing in rediscovered freedom (Storm Trooper helmet drums anyone?). Anyone familiar with the Star Wars universe will know there have been extensive post-episode-6 books written - will Ep7 render these 'non-canon' or will it be sympathetic to the plotlines here? Luke, Leia and Han play a huge part in the post-emperor Star Wars world, but Luke Hamil, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are certainly all too old to reprise an 'immediately post-revolution' role so perhaps we are looking at a 'next generation' storyline following some crisis or plot involving decendants (you never know, you might see Luke Hamil and Harrison Ford in it again) - similar to the time gap between Ep3 and Ep4 which allowed for the characters at the end of 3 to age enough that the different actors weren't a problem.

 

Either way, fans have a choice to ignore the new trilogy and revere the original - it's not like they are re-making the originals.... yet....

Don't worry though.... It's an easy mistake to make.... Just ask Mark, himself!

 

As he get's out of his Tie-Fighter, in the original, he calls out to Leia by shouting "Carrie!" It's hardly noticeable....Just like Luke Hamill!!!

Didn't Lucas originally write all plot all nine back in the 70's?

 

I'm sure my brother has a magazine which came out around the time of Ep 1. which detailed what happened next, I recall some kind of battle on the Wookie homeworld and Chewy dies in episode 7 or 8.

You're all far too pessimistic :p

 

The biggest benefit of all this is that George Lucas is no longer involved in Star Wars. The longer it's gone on, the more it's become apparent that the original film was a fluke - I mean, have you ever seen the early drafts with Luke Starkiller in? Empire was the best film and that was directed by Irvin Kershner, not Lucas, and then Episode VI started the slow decline into marketing when he realised what a cash cow it was.

 

The special editions almost without exception took away from the magic and the mythos, and the prequel trilogy... well, I just wish he'd had someone near him brave enough to say No on occasion.

 

So more Star Wars, but less Lucas? Sounds perfect to me. He was a great producer, undoubtedly, but as a writer and a director, well, lets just remember the Anakin "romance" scenes in Episode 2.

 

Also, Avengers Assemble was amazing so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. They might even get Joss Whedon on board for the new trilogy - that'd be something...

Am I the only one who liked the new trilogy? (well excepting the annoying (on too many levels) episode 1). For my money I'd love to see Timothy Zane's Thrawn trilogy on the big screen. I'd be happy with new actors in old parts (Dr Who and Bond have gotten away with it for years), I think the stories more important than who plays the roles.

 

That said, if they could get some one as good as CGI as WETA (Gollum, Lord of the Rings) then maybe a Final Fantasy-esque trilogy with the original actors voicing the parts would be a win-win? Having seen Monsters Inc (the fur on Sully (have I got the right character?)) Pixar might just have the chops to pull it off without it looking as bad as Avatar.

thrawn trilogy probably would make a good movie yes. As to actors to a point if they use different ones so be it. Might be interesting to see what pixar could do with it they do good technical work but always make sure there is a good story there

Groan, not another "Caravan of Courage".

 

Although I had a friend who was really into Star Wars back in the day and he had loads of the novels, such as "Han Solo's Revenge", which was supposed to be pretty good. In fact the original "New Hope" book is fairly decent and covers more about Luke before he meets Kenobi.

 

If you read the article, though, it's Lawrence Kasdan on board for the stand-alones - i.e. the guy what wrote Empire Strikes Back.

 

Every piece of news that comes out about these films has me conflicted:

* Disney have bought LucasFilm. Cash-ins ahoy! Except Star Wars has always been that way, and the Marvel films have still been brilliant since Disney bought them.

* JJ Abrams directing. Star Trek was a great SF spectacle film, that style would work well for SW (with less lens flare). But Cloverfield was iffy and Lost ended horribly...

* Standalone films: cash in. Kasdan writing: but good films?

 

I'm still at "cautiously optimistic" for now, then, but some out-and-out good news would be nice.

I must say I'm 'midly optimistic' about these. Being an unashamed Star Wars fan I've always wanted to see the Thrawn trilogy be turned into 7, 8 & 9 but new it was unlikely.

 

I'd like to see a Luke film maybe taken from one of the later novels too.

 

I understand that though unlikely to happen we will probably get new stories with some basis in the current generation of novels similar to recent comic book adaptations.

 

Roll on the first JJ Abrams Lightsabre Duel though! :)

I would love these new films to be somewhere NEAR as good as the original....

 

So, I am vaguely optimistic....which is a bit more than "midly optimistic"!!

Slightly more optimistic but with less specific goals? :)
