Adobe Reader XI Released

I tried not installing Reader on Win8 machines as the built-in reader will open pdfs, but it didn't work well as lots of the sites teachers/assistants like to download from didn't seem to recognise MS Reader .

 

Wonder if Edge will fare better? I'd like to be able to get rid of at least one bit of Adobe software this year.

 

Makes you wonder why Microsoft haven't/didn't include a version of Adobe Reader, just as they did Adobe Flash since Windows 8 and later. Would have made more sense! It's interesting that they still don't include a version of Silverlight as standard either. I appreciate Microsoft are probably now pushing for HTML5 (which is included), it's a bit of a mish mash in terms of common tools/applications/formats that Microsoft may (you never know), get right with Windows 10.

Browsing the FTP site, there is no 11.0.11 exe, the latest is only Adobe Reader 11.0.10, with .11 as an MSP file only.

That link you supplied isn't the 11.0.11 release? It's 11.0.09?

Correct. You would need to patch it with the latest update (in this case 11.0.11). I use the Setup.ini method to do this at install time.

Adobe don't always release up-to-date MSIs with every release.

Word (2016): Asks if you want to convert (presumably you can GPO this) then slowly converts it (I did a manual) and the end results are fugly with no navigation.

Edge: Opens quickly, looks OK but no navigation pane though internal links work. Also seems to used cached Word views, so a pdf opened in Word looks ugly, but another is fine. Didn't try a reboot to see if this persists.

Reader: As Edge but you can specify a page number.

 

So, we're still stuck with Reader .

Do you mean converting PDF to Word? It's always going to be hit and miss, depending on what you're converting, very much like Word 2013.

 

I still think (and agree with you) that Adobe Reader should be installed on Windows 10, despite Microsoft's best efforts, it doesn't cut it in practice.

Have been playing around with Adobe Reader XI and DC and both support annotation and signing your name etc in the Free Reader product. Was a little surprised it worked as I assumed the buttons were just adverts for the Acrobat Pro version / cloud subscription.

 

Was in many ways superior to trying to fill out a form in MS Word (without resorting to the troublesome protection features) as you do not have to worry about messing up the layout of the underlying document. Very easy interface for saving a signature for repeated use.

 

I guess Adobe are upping their game as the competition from the various built-in readers for Chrome / Win 10 / iOS / Android etc.
