Wow! Seriously? Free.

I used to use 3DS Max day in day out (started off on 3D Studio r4) and it's a seriously powerful package but extremely steep learning curve. All the autodesk stuff is a bit high end for secondary school.

Hmm, anyone worked out how the licensing works from an "install to a bunch of computers in a lab" perspective? From my reading of the license, it appears each installed instance stands alone?

 

Or TLDR: am I going to need a product key per machine?

Will watch that thread, when you run the installer you have the option to "Create Deployment" which looks certainly aimed at bulk deployment on the education software.

I cant find that Licence Update on the site. On the Download Center it still says "Autodesk Student Version software may not be used in the classroom or lab for instructional purposes, or for commercial or for-profit purposes"

Education Community License Update

 

Like most companies, they will take a while/eternity/heat death of the universe to update their licensing docs/EULAs so everything tallies up.

Just after I've paid the annual license to Autodesk for Maya.. they decide that I can get it for free...

 

 

The deployment for this is fairly simple if they'll give you a serial number and product code.

So not actually that useful then, since it assumes the install is on the students personally-owned machine.

The free licenses available in the Education Community are still individual Stand-alone Licenses and as such, should not be getting pushed out or deployed in a classroom or lab environment.

 

The major difference in the license type / agreement is that students or educators may now use their own Educational Stand-alone License in the classroom where as the previously available Student Licenses were set up strictly for individual learning / home use.

 

Please see the following Education Community License Update for more info and accept as a solution if this fully resolves your inquiry, or reply with additional questions or comments accordingly.

Don't suppose you use Mandatory profiles? Been having a problem when opening from a Staff/Student account.

The license says that the indivual can install it on 1 computer, it does not specify anything else. I could see a scenario where I install the software with my facualty serial and as long as each pupil has their own personal license we'd be in a decent grey area.

 

The only technical issue would be the edu banner on all printing and no deployment options.

I guess if you go to some posh edu establishment where you're expected to have an uberlaptop then you can use the software in class. (of course they and or pupil could probably afford it anyway!?)

After hearing several conflicting reports of the changes to the Autodesk site licensing, it does appear that Autodesk will supply up to 125 seats of their software for free.

holy crap, it works. I've got the Master Suite 2013 125 seat licence server and software running! How is this not the biggest deal on edugeek right now! (I just saved another school, £2500!

I've been contacted by Matt Bell who is leading on it for Autodesk UK. They haven't officially launched the offer yet, I guess they will publicize it more when they do, although they are leaving it late for roll outs over this summer. However resellers shouldn't have been selling UK schools education licenses since July 2012, when the offer actually started (if you were in the know)

 

We have not officially launched the programme as we are putting the finishing touches to our web interface, UK specific curriculum and case studies, so at the moment schools are signing up pretty much through word of mouth, but here is what I am currently sending to schools who contact me directly in regards to the offer:

 

Autodesk provides Secondary education institutions, teachers and students with Free access to over thirty 2D and 3D design & visualization software offerings and also makes available free training, teaching and learning resources for personal use.

 

To apply to download Free* software for your institution please visit the Autodesk Academic Resource Center at Autodesk Academic Resource Center. I have attached step by step instructions to this email.
