For the other mailbox that has the exact same issue, both the general user and the actual user has the inheritance box ticked

The very 1st time you send the email via Outlook it works and any attempts after fail & it always works via OWA? just read the post again & want to make sure it clear? You also mention ABP, how are they configured? Any chance to have a look at this over a webex or something similar?

Yes that's right, in OWA I opened another users mailbox and sent it from there. I can't see any other option to send as a different user in OWA

Never saw that, just tried it and straight away it said "You don't have the permissions required to send messages from this mailbox."

I had to type the email address in as it wasn't a member of the Staff Address GAL

Yeah I had to seperate the Staff and Pupils into separate Address Lists so that the Staff couldn't see the Pupil email addresses and vice versa

And you are 100% sure the the default SMTP address is domain3 and that is what you're trying to out as. It seems like send-as is not working at all. Open another mailbox is different as we have seen it fails in owa too using thr from field.

100% sure the default domain is domain3 and I don't think the Helpdesk has domain1 on it, but I never use @domain1 for anything. It's just a receiving address.

 

Can try the powershell command tomorrow. Is the alias the alias in the properties?

alias is that. That seems possible from I can see but it depends on how thr mbx is setup along with the other stuff we discussed. But yes it should work. I'll test.

I think you should do the same test in your env, create 2 accounts and set permissions as requied, don;t set the Send-As as you dont want that. Just Send-on-Behalf. No membership in any groups other than domain users for both accounts.

On your environment, are you running Server 2k8 R2 with Exchange standard SP3?

 

We migrated from Server 2003, not sure if that's got anything to do with it

95% use Outlook in school, so it's not that

My env is exch 2010 sp1 & I tested with sp2, I wont go into the RU level just yet. The OS is W2K8. Ent for bot OS & Exch. I think your issue isn't related to any SP level, just a misconfig/the way u are using it.

Yeah I think it is as well. I put SP3 on not only to try and resolve the SendAs issue but I had a issue with searching in OWA
