Fibre Only Top Switch Suggestions

Hi,

 

I am looking for a switch which only had fibre modules in it, hopefully around 12 ports. We want to use this as a Top Switch where fibre connections and servers go into.

 

Do these exist and can anyone suggest a model to look at?

I've got an old ish (5yrs) 3Com 24port 5500G SFP for sale if you want it?

It has capacity for 10GBE modules (which I have)

We replaced it with A5800's which would be my recommend for a new switch.

D-Link do similar but Im nervous of investing in them, anyone recommend their products or had nightmares with them?

These switches do indeed exist, but no-one's asked what speed your fibre needs to run at! I presume you're currently running 100 or 1000Mbps fibre links to all buildings/locations?

 

Depending on the type and length of fibre, such as OM1, OM2 or OM3 and the speed you want them to run at are important factors to think about.

The XSM is a quality top of rack Fibre switch with the ability to take both SFP and 10GBe SFP+ modules, unlike the competition you can quite happily use compatible or other OEMs GBIC's which when populating one of these is a major cost saving.

They also work quite happily with most Twinax DAC cables.

I have had lots of experience with them, they are shocking. They are fine for the first year and a half, just long enough for you to buy a few more. Then they start dropping ports, corrupting packets, crashing out and being louder than construction equipment. Stay clear if you can, they may be cheap but whatever you pay for them they are still a ripoff.

 

NetGear is better and apparently they do actually provide support in the UK - unlike here.

 

HP is good but expensive, Cisco is great but realllllly expensive.

We have a couple of D-links, we double up on them because they are cheap. Haven't had any problems yet (in about 2 years) but we bought them as a stop gap before we could afford better switches which seems to be getting further and further away at the moment.

Maybe but some schools simply don't have the resources to spend £5k+ on a core switch. And if the choice for a school was a cleaner or a switch, then there is only 1 choice for them.

I have D-link exclusively and have had no problems. I have 2 x DGS3627 with 24SFP modules and 2x 10Gbit as my backbone plus 27 Gbit 24 and 48 port switches.

I have had 1 port failure and the switch was immediately swapped out without question via courier

Well, that´s right, but if you have equipped your server with SFP+ NICs and now you have no money left to buy a 10Gbe switch ;-)

i'd be doing that the other way round, buying the 10gb switches and then settling for plugging the servers in the edge switches via copper "temporarily" as the servers were much more likely to be replaced before switches
