Ok, now this is a weird one!

I've recently just setup a new server for a school in a very standard, Vanilla Windows way. Its all working perfectly except, they are having some strange internet problems.

Basically, it looks like the connection keeps dropping. Every so often, web pages won't load and you will have to reload the page a few times before it opens. When I am remoted on, I see it when my remote session drops for about 15 to 20 seconds and reconnects.

I have been in front of one of the PCs running a continuous ping to google's DNS servers and the ping doesn't drop but we do still loose web browsing. Equally, email still flows with no problems.

This is a network wide issue and I'm baffled.

Any clues?

Cheers!

What kind of upstream stuff do you have there, is it going to an LEA connection with proxies, local router, local filter, Smoothwall, ISA/TMG. It sounds more like a network issue, possibly the router messing up NAT or something.

Are you pinging from the affected desktops or from the router / switch ? I'd try a continuous ping on the core router and switch make sure there's no drop outs there. And as SYNACK said are you being proxied ? And also are you using any security software on the affected machines ? Does the internet drop out occur during certain times ?

There is nothing else of interest upstream. I have tried it without any type of proxy and it makes no difference.

The drop outs are at random it seems but fairly often. I do wonder about the router....

hmmm sounds a little odd. Sometimes DNS can go a bit screwy and affect the loading of web pages. What do you have set as your DNS server?

Does sound like a dns issue - I would setup the servers to use googles dns servers to forward out to 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4

I found the answer!!

We had teamed the two network cards on the server (HP Proliant ML110 G7) and it was this that was causing the problem! I took off the teaming and everything has been working perfectly ever since!!

Very strange one though!
