One of the teachers who has just bought an iPad (he also bought a new laptop a couple of months ago) said... "...and it's sooo much better than a laptop..." Discuss...
speckytecky Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Only really good things I see the are a plus for the iPad is that you lift the cover and it's ready fired up to go, second good point is the current fact that it's built in security seems to be better than that on a PC - currently, that is!
SYNACK Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 It depends on what you are using it for, for mindless content consumption tablets are great. Its because they are new things and there is the Apple sheep factor involved too.

When I told her how much it would cost to purchase and to get accessories to make it work like a laptop (stands, BT keyboards) and that she would then have to cart them around everywhere, and that she wouldn't just be able to plug a VGA cable into it and have it work with the hall projector. She decided she would get a samsung netbook for less than half the price - with 10 times the storage and an interface she knows.

Well, I have just had my iPad 1 upgraded to an iPad 3 as a gift, and although the extra speed is nice and the screen is razor sharp, I've come to the conclusion that if I could afford an Ultrabook, it would be so much more useful to me. As has been said, the iPad is good for content consumption (mainly, although there is still quite a lot of the web that doesn't work well) but anything more than that becomes a complete headache. Even compared to my Android phone. For example, with my HTC, I can print web pages, attachments, photos etc straight to my networked HP OfficeJet printer with no hassles, but it wont work with the iPad because it's not on the special list of AirPrint printers. I like the size/weight, the portability and the battery life, hence the Ultrabook desire, but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with its shortcomings. Hopefully this is where the Surface with Windows 8 Pro is going to come into its own...

"It's so much nicer to type on than the old style keyboards on the school computers" ps I like the iPad...it looks good and is nice to work with...but...I don't like the price, the limited (in my opinion) functionality and I especially don't want to be the one explaining to teachers why the online "resource" sites they like to use for educational activities for pupils don't work...

"It's so much nicer to type on than the old style keyboards on the school computers" I hope she also likes the RSI/OOS that comes with it and the hefty slowdown on maximum typing speed, probably not a great concern of hers if she does that little of it that she thinks the touch keyboard is better.
