Username format

The only issue we find with admission number is that SIMS creates this on the students first day in school, so its a mad rush to get the usernames created and stickers for their contact book printed and distributed ready for them to logon often first lesson.

I used to use intake year initial surname so 10jblogss etc

 

staff was just initialsurname so jbloggs

 

We use exactly the above. I think we have 2 conflicts in approximately 1100 pupils.

 

I visited a seminar once where someone suggested using a student's UPN!!!

 

I have seen admission numbers from SIMS used. Unsurprisingly most pupils could not remember that they were A45926 rather than 08JBloggs

 

EDIT: Ooops, just saw @beagle's post - no offence intended, it just caused so many problems with pupils forgetting their usernames never mind their passwords.

We just use year of entry, first initial, surname 12JDoe. if there are duplicates we just put a 1 on the end of one of them. Never had more than 2 students with the exact same username.

 

I wouldnt recommend using UPNS as half of them cant even remember their password when its 123.

no offence 36 degrees, we do not use names as they often change as the student goes up the school and we would have the equivelent of 42xJBloggs in each year group - every school is different.

Interesting that everyone seems to use students names in some fashion. We were told by CLT that we were not allowed to use names at all as their email address is [email protected] and we aren't allowed to have students identifiable by their email address for child protection purposes. We use: Year of entry, tutor and admission number, eg 12ABC1234.

 

Wouldn't mind seeing a citation for that, as would most of this forum. It would be a fair estimation to say that a majority use names.

is it a safeguarding/Child protection reason or a Data Protection reason behind this i wonder. I know WSGFL used to use first 4 letters of surname initial then 3 digits so blogj068 but i think the reasoning behind it was more the username couldn't easily be guessed by estranged parents ect but not 100% sure.

I can see the sense in not using surnames, but I would say it is a difficult one to call.

I would imagine from this thread (that I started, SORRY) that most schools are using surnames or parts of surnames as part of the students username.

I would have thought there should be some clear guidelines on this sort of thing, but having done a little search I could find nothing on the subject.

Still not sure what to do now though.

A lot of our little erks can't remember their names, let alone a random code. When they get stuff like that, Educationcity for example, they write their username and password in their planner.

I use the initial of the forname - J, initial of the second name - A and surname - Bloggs with two digits of the year that they started school - 12 e.g. JABloggs12.

 

So far we've not had any duplicates in the year groups. If needs be I can add a third initial - B e.g. JABBloggs12.
