Just thought I'd suggest PEBuilder to the good folks on here. Allows you to use an XP/2003 CD to create a bootable "live" CD for booting workstations with damaged XP/2003 installation.

 

Can have many programs for anti spyware, malware, disk recovery, unerasing and ghosting "bolted on" to it.

 

By far one of the most useful disks in my CD pack (for home as well as work use). Allows full access to NTFS as well.

I thought about it, but at the time I was on dialup.. PEbuilder just gave me the tool to use what I had on hand.

 

I have...several Linux liveCDs in my pack. However, PEbuilder is all preset with the programs we use, so it's just a case of "grab 'n' go"..

I too use Knoppix- in fact it allowed me to rescue some very important files and work for a member of staff earlier this year...very good OS and very flexible.

Knoppix would be a lot nicer if they included that NTFS utility into knoppix so that you didnt have to use 3rd party tools or utils to use or have access to NTFS partitions etc.

 

Other then that knoppix is very good

I used knoppix with XP Pro (NTFS) with no problems- what you are talking about is perhaps writing to an NTFS partition which can be done now but *may* corrupt the file system (though it hasn't for me as yet).

Knoppix user too. Never have had the time or inclination to build a PE disc when knoppix updates regularly and works with no work on my part.

Ah, but the same could be said for PE...no work required if you go for UBCD..it's just nice if you want something to do the job, without having to re-learn Linux just to do a fix..

 

As for UBCD, yes, I have one of those too..

I thought PE and UBCD were two different things? I assumed PE was just a Windows Live CD. I have a UBCD in my kit too - use it for booting off the network - better than creating custom ghostcast floppies as it recognises most network cards.

Nah...UBCD is PEBuilder as a base, with a "toolkit" bolted on.

 

Lets put it this way...WinPE is something MS wouldn't release for free..

OK _ little Knoppix query while we're on the subject - I like Knoppix for salvage - but I was trying to use it to burn off copies of some files on a damagewd laptop - but it didn't seem to be able to relinquish control of the CD drive to the burning software, because Knoppix was using it to run from - is there a trick to getting it to work??

Because knoppix runs "live" (i.e. from the CD) I have always copied files I need to backup to either a network share or external drive- say a HDD or memory stick; then I put them onto CD using a different machine.

I was rescuing a standalone laptop - so the network wasn't available - only one CD and it choked on my pen drive. I'm suer I managed to do this on an earlier releasse of Knoppix though... perhaps I was just lucky.

 

On boot CDs - the SuperAIO disk that does the rounds on the internet is very useful (if highly illegal) - with copies of nearly all useful repair stuff on it from Ghost, Partition Magic etc to Adaware and Spybot

I recently used Bart PE with the Drive Image XML plugin from Runtime Software (free) to restore a server from a Drive Image XML backup stored on another network computer. Worked a treat!
