faza Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I am installing Pro Desktop v8 on to the server and then a shortcut on the users desktop. I can run the software from the server. But when i run it from the workstation the startup screen loads as if the program is loading then just disaapears. Any help would be appreciated. Faza
plexer Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I think you are going to have to install the application in each workstation either by imaging or msi delivery. I seriously doubt a cad program would work running from a share. Ben
limbo Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I know the old version of pro desktop really did not like it if there was not a default printer installed - similar sort of symptoms to this.
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 I have a printer installed - this is a strange one!
bishopsgarthstockton Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 can you use the program if your logged on as admin on a client machine?
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 yes i can, so that suggests it a policy its not security permissions because i checked and they are the same as the admin domain which works. So i wonder what would it be in the group policy stopping it.
bishopsgarthstockton Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I think you may find it is a permissions issue. have you ran REGMON and FILEMON under staff and studdent accounts? This should flag up any dennied access permissions to the reg and folder/files.
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 If i login as administrator run the software then login as a pupil the software will run no problems. I have restarted the machine logged back on as a pupil and the software still loads. What is causing me to log in as administrator before the software loads on a pupil account????

bishopsgarthstockton Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 is the application data stored on the machine locally, or on the server? by logging on as admin you are updating the application data folder, whre as the student account wont be allowed to do so.
Joedetic Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 "c:\program files\ptc\prodesktop 8.0\program\prod.exe" /regserver cd c:\program files\ptc\prodesktop 8.0\program prod.exe exit That's what i put into a batch file and set it up as the shortcut to run ProD in the start menu. It runs the line to do the regserver thing and then loads the program itself. That fixed our problems with ProD. Just be thankful you're not dealing with Pro Engineer....that's complicated with license servers and stuff *Sigh*
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 The application data is stored on server mandatory Profile
DSapseid Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 The regserver thing is what fixed it here. We just put it into a batch file and logged onto every machine one as domain admin ran the file and bam it worked and that was 6months ago and not another problem to this day and we have lots of problems with it!!!
bishopsgarthstockton Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I had no problems installing the software on our machines. why did you decide to install it on the server and not the client machines?
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 We like to install all our software on the server.
mrforgetful Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Everyone likes to, just not always possible, especially with some crappy coding that goes into EduSoftware*. *hope that's not actually a company
faza Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 It seems to work log in as admin run software then log in as pupil it works fine strange
john Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Just be thankful you're not dealing with Pro Engineer....that's complicated with license servers and stuff *Sigh* The joys of FlexLM by any chance? I use Mathcad and that uses that, and my applications server never gets a new box as its not financially prudent to do so so it moves boxes frequently and hence the flexlm moves and the NIC Mac changes.... you get the drift, basically its a ball ache.
Joedetic Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Yup FlexLM ftl. And i know what you mean about switching boxes.
Ric_ Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 We habve had a problem with the extrude function in Pro Desktop 8 causing the app to bomb out. Tried everything above but in the end we have had to run as administrator prior to pupil use... it must just be the software trying to write to somewhere it shouldn't on first use. 1
Silverman Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 We have the same issue with ours ric, seems strange.
machin05 Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 We had exactly the same issue. If I install it on a pc I have to log in and run it as an Administrator once. Before this it would just crash out when trying to extude. Bad software design I guess.
