The story.......

The donuts in the staff room got contaminated with some kind of mutant virus known only as 'Insert name here' now all the teachers are zombified due to it. This results in the government shutting the whole school down and sealing it off with teachers and pupils inside. Pupils have barricaded themselves into classrooms and other rooms to get away from the teachers and are screaming for help.

Its up to you to save the pupils and work out how the donuts got infected in the first place. On the way you will meet zombie teachers, prefects who help you out and the rare non zombified teachers (They are basically on a diet and did not eat a donut) that give super special items. You will manage to navigate the maze/corridors/rooms with the aid of the IT Tech who has managed to barricade himself in his office and is using his expertise to guide you.

And i dunno.......

That sort of sounds like a dream I had once...

One of the teachers took a group of a few [basically the 6 remaining] pupils into the basement, where the boiler is, because it became too cold to stay "up top"...

Everyone devolved into small clans...

Think "Mad Max" meets "The Matrix"... with a bit of "Resident Evil" thrown in.

Personally, if I'm aiming to learn a new language, I start small and tend to go for throwaway (because you will do things at the beginning in a way you will wish you hadn't) task. I tend to pick physics/particle simulations (pretty pictures) - they are quick to develop, good for learning the language and you get quick gratification in terms of seeing results. For a game I'd suggest single screen, 2D arcade type stuff with an emphasis on simple!

Whether I'd strongly recommend doing a throwaway task would depend on your general programming experience. How much programming have you done, using what languages and how much OOP have you done (i.e. building classes rather than using instances of classes).

[ETA - Example throwaway program (built using processing)].

Actually it's:

1) Learn C++ on the job [as it were]

2) Make shoddy game

3) ???

4) PROFIT!

Actually, judging by the back of most Sherston titles - many of their authors have gone...

1) Learn Flash on the job

2) Make shoddy educational game

3) ??? (or actually - sell to sherston)

4) Profit!

It's worked for them with some really shoddy stuff - not saying yours would be shoddy, but if they can do it...

Oh, it WILL be shoddy.

I know my limitations.

I've been looking at a few bit and pieces... Flash developer tools are expensive... so I may have to aquire them another way. [if I decide to use flash] Entirely legitimate, of course.

Plus, I've been looking at Allegro...

Although - now someone has mentioned memes. (to be honest, any thread started by @X-13 will always go towards memes)

Why can I not get the idea of a Nyancat / Neincat tron bike style battle game out of my head?

Now, what were the rules to that blummin' 'game'?

You're late to the party.

Read the comments on my blog post about this.

"The Game" has been mentioned and memes have been brought up.

Admit it, @X-13, you have no plans to create an interactive medium of entertainment.. This thread exists purely to make us.. Lose.. (Deliberate avoidance of a certain phrase..)

To get back on topic, should you not just create something with your own interests?

Hell, how are you going to have the motivation to finish it if it's something you might not like?

Even if it's partly a learning excercise for coding your own engine..

Granted, learing to do that would be serious fun..

And that might do enough to keep you motivated.. but..

My thoughts would be if you're not interested in what you're creating, you probably will lose motivation.

Every time I embark on a project I haven't 100% decided on, it fails 'cause of this exact reason.

But if you're sure you want to go ahead with it.. I'd say a 2d platformer with some puzzles, story-based. Throw in a nod to us geeks every now and again, or a meme or popular culture reference, just for the giggles. As for the exact subject, I got no clue either xD

If you have an end-boss as a huge Mako shark, I'll be happy. I don't advocate the killing of animals, even in games, so if you'd make it a companion or ally, that'd be great too.

I miss text-based adventure games. An interactive adventure with decent graphical imagery to accompany it would be awesome. Then again, mentally I'm going on about 50. There's no school like the old school, even though I was barely talking at the golden era of 80's gaming.

This was one of my options.

Like this. A bit of text, a bit of pictures.

But then I'd have to do all the coding for multiple paths, plus something to interpret input and give an appropriate response.

AND I'd have to figure out pretty much EVERY input a user could possibly use...

Which is why I'm NOT doing it.

Oh, Jebus... I just downloaded blender...

It looks so confusing...

But, my plan is slowly coming together... though it's gone from shoddy 2d to even more shoddy 3d. [and currently stands at around 6 pages.]

Dual type platform/puzzle and fighting.

Puzzle sections and boss fights. [the parts of Zelda I like the most.]

IMO it has one of the steepest learning curves of any software. There are some good tutorials though. Start with the basics, the window layout, editing modes etc. keyboard shortcuts are essential!

Once you have the basics, have a look at some of Andrew Prices tutorials on Belnder Guru. They are extremely good quality and reasonably easy to follow (if I can, anyone can!).

Do you just have to work out how to hit a glowing section of the boss and then do it three times?

TBH I may delete it... Every time I open "user preferences" the entire thing crashes.

Oh, no.

No, no, no, no, no.

[/Evil_Grin]

I may knock together a demo of sorts, one platform section and one boss.

Yeah, I'm saying this as if it's going to be done quickly...

Would definitely be interested to see a demo and I'll volunteer right now to be a beta tester - on the condition you do me the same courtesy ;)

Currently working on a Java RPG; PC based initially with a view to an Android port once it's been polished based on beta tester's feedback. Working title - "Halja"

We're still a way off a beta but hoping to have a playable alpha by the end of summer (working on this with @kism3t), at the moment we have a map editor with destructible tiles, some basic AI enemies and I've almost finished implementing A* path finding (the whole game will be controlled by the mouse, this is to make it a natural progression to touch screen devices when the port is done) - it's taken a little over a month to reach this point.

Done and done.

I started drawing a bit of concept art for it last night... I forgot how badly I draw...

Also, this won't be a beta test... It's more pre-alpha, engine testing and design refining.

I'm going to warn you though... I may put in some Kaepora Gaepora traps.

From OoT:

[Kaepora Gaepora]: [after long ranbling explaination] would you like to hear that again?

[game]: Select No as default... That'll teach button mashers.

@LosOjos and @X-13 .. I would be more-than-happy to Alpha/Beta both of your games. Which you just lost again ;)

For f... I'm unsubscribing from this thread.

(Also: I'll happily beta test, but be warned that I am the kind of person that takes the phrase "constructive criticism" seriously, and will not soften any blows. But I won't be nasty for the sake of it either, so if you're fine with me tearing it apart and don't get upset, I'll do my bit)

That's cool...

Just leave the graphic alone. Because I'm hand drawing everything... With a mouse.
