Online courses

I want to learn some more skills before I take any job. But there are so many online courses and schools that I don't know which is the best one to choose. I have only found some related sites, online college , student loan consolidation and education online . I don't know where to start my learn. I wonder if you could give me some other suggestion or recommendation. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi there.

 

I take it you are talking about IT courses? It depends on where you are at now- if you are looking for a job in IT the best course to start with is the A+. Your local college will most likely run one of these and because it is an industry recognised qualification it will stand you in very good stead. You could, of course, just buy a study guide for the A+ on Amazon for around £40- make sure it is the 2006 exam track and by Myers.

 

If you want a degree, and you need to take it part time/distance then the OU are hard to beat. My wife is studying a computer science degree with the OU and the materials and support are second to none. I would actually value a BSc more than industry certifications- but either will get you in the door at a lot of places.

you don't say where you're from Leilani, so this may not be relevant, but I'm doing a degree from Lancaster Uni, one day a month, for 3 -4 years.

 

The prices are quite reasonable!

I too have been looking at the OU for a completely different course (I already have BSc(hons) Computing) and I agree with Kingswood in that the resources I have seen seem excellent. Some might (or dare I say will) have a differing opinion on the value of a degree vs industry certs. Not sure where I am on this debate. In addition to the A+, the CCNA from Cisco also seems popular round these parts. Good luck

My current computing qualification is within the OU BSc dgree I did in the late 80's - early 90's. I am currently enrolled for a MCSA through e-Careers.co.uk I'm over 50 years old, I'm finding the course extremely interesting and useful but I reckon I'm going to find the exams a struggle.

The only way your going to satisfy everyone is to have a degree, industry certs and experience. Generally though your fine with experience and a degree or certs. Some people want it all though unfortunately !
