I have already written a letter of complaint to the Lingor Government asking them why I pay road tax if these gaping potholes will not be filled in. I did not, however, let someone get out of my vehicle to search a backpack then conveniently run them over. Nor did I crash a car and have to wait 5 minutes for my passenger to regain consciousness. And I don't think we even need to bring up the leg breaking helicopter incident now do we! Ooo Ooo! Lets bring up the chopper incident! That always make me smile as it was so awesome! nikaso Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I play Standalone occasionally, I'm pretty kitted now but paranoid about moving near the coast! In terms of tips this is what worked for me: Find some food and water/soda when you spawn Head inland (I ended up at the North West airfield), most bandits and other survivors often stick around the coastal areas in particular the cities Electro and Cherno. Get an online map up so you can alt-tab to it, once you find a road sign you can usually figure out where you are on the map (towns etc are in cyrillic but you can match the symbols and letters up on the map) Your best melee weapons are the axes, in particular the fire axe but anything is better than fists. Remember you can drink at water pumps if they are present in villages. I tend to approach villages cautiously at first but with the intention of attracting zombies (preferably one at a time) because I can one shot them with my axe and then I'm not worrying they will jump on me when I am looting a building. don't eat rotten food. Most tinned food can only be opened with a can opener or a edged melee weapon (in which case you spill some food when opening it). That's a very basic guide, there are far more detailed ones out there but those steps got me started (I was also lucky enough to get an axe fairly early)

Only play the standalone if you're willing to accept it is very buggy, you will lose characters and things may not work at all. If playing the mod, get DayZ Commander (or similar) which manages DayZ for you. It lets you install the other maps, search for servers etc. Personally Lingor server is the best map, much better balanced than Chernarus.

d0pefish Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I'm not sure if Lingor is now just the new Lingor (was it Skalinator...where they fixed the barrack doors bug) or the original one or if they still run both. Either way it was great and I might tank up on painkillers to have a blast this weekend if others are. I do hope Lingor is added as an official map in the standalone, or at the very least a map similar to it. Chernarus is OK but there are just way too few towns. I'd like to see a more urbanised map.

Yea, if your playing the mod, DayZ commander is THE tool to have. You can download and update new maps, join servers, set up a 'friends' list etc. It's really good.

d0pefish Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) I think the Lingor map was about 600mb (or it was for the server files). DayZ commander has the nice feature of letting you filter certain servers, like first person only, no tracer bullets, daytime only, etc. IMO night time is an amazing time to play. you can move easier without zombies seeing you and its a LOT more atmospheric. Nothing beats running and hearing a zombie but only being able to see the outline as you run. or seeing muzzle flash in the distance and deciding whether to creep by or go fight. I've played a couple of Arma3 first person only servers and they do definitely change the gameplay. In 3rd person you can, in effect, see round corners or over walls as you can tilt the camera. So you kind of get an advantage. When you come to play, Lingor is slightly different to the standard DayZ mod. On Lingor the island is slightly smaller, has more towns/villages, a lot more functioning vehicles and a LOT more military bases where you can get great weapons and ammo from. Takes about an hour in Lingor to get geared up to the max and when you die, it's quite easy to get back to your body or re-arm from scratch. This has the effect of making everyone a bit more "gun ho"... Such items in the vanilla DayZ mod are a lot more scarce and dyeing becomes more of a problem as it takes longer to get back to your body (which chances are will have been picked dry and hidden by the time you get back to it) and also takes longer to get geared up. So when you move from Lingor to vanilla DayZ, don't let the fact that you struggle to find good gear and regular dyeing put you off. It's up to you how to play DayZ and it can make a big difference. Sneaky? Crawling, prone, hidden, silent, running away from gunshots and other survivors? Hero? Gearing up, announcing yourself to others who need help, joining in on gunfights to take down bandits, only to take the risk of being shot in the back of the head when you least expect it? Bandit? Why gear up when you can just kill others and take their stuff? Or general A-hole? Gear-up, then sit along the coastline killing new spawns that have no gear, guns or ammo, just because you can (and for the LOLZ). Edited January 24, 2014 by Rawns
