Chopper crashes are what made Lingor so fun. Seeing smoke in the distance, getting up to it and hoping nobody else is around, picking the chopper clean of good weapons then running like fsck. Or seeing another chopper land next to it to try and loot it......or more importantly watching Rawns trying to fly and land a plane.....much hilarity ensues

A-10s bad... took off, didn't know how to fly, dive bombed the floor.

Survived like a baws. Probably about 5% blood left, but survived, nonetheless.

Lingor is truly awesome, even if you just play the way I did, sat on the roof of a tower block with a bag of food, water, ammo, and a sniper rifle. That was a fun day.

Probably going to take the sneaky approach until I'm comfortable with what I'm doing! :D Actually can't wait to get stuck in now!! :D

i took the sneaky approach for ages. used to crawl in to towns, crawl through buildings....then realised i could outrun zombies. if you know a few of the "tricks" like breaking line of sight and hiding in certain areas you can waltz through a town without a problem. you generally tend to do that up until you have a gun then have to watch as firing it will attract a LOT of them.

other things to note

- smoke grenades draw zombies. throw one and they run to it....so can be used as distraction or to pull zombies to an enemy.

- getting matches/hatchet/knife will mean you are self sufficient in food as you can kill, gut and cook animals. i think one of the later updates (not sure if it applies to lingor) also let you eat raw meat with the possibility of infection

- trust no-one. NO-ONE! that guy that is unarmed and says he needs help....chances are his mate is on the hill with a sniper rifle watching you. that person you just helped out who was being attacked by zombies....good chance he will now kill you for your gear. unless you know the person in question (and even then if its rawns) do not trust that a) they're alone and b) they won't kill you.

- if you have a second monitor, load the map up from a website on it. it helps with orientation. when you first spawn it tells you which area you are in, so you can use that as a base.

- if you start with a compass, great, you can navigate from there. if only a map (M) then set a private marker (shift and click) to a city and it will show you in game the direction. if you have neither, the clouds move east, so use them as a guide. after a while (especially with lingor) you get to know the map and wont need it.

- if using a sniper rifle, learn about zeroing. i tended to run a few of the arma missions that let me practice that so you could get used to quickly working out the range of an enemy, altering the zeroing on your rifle and also sniping a moving target. although most human enemies in game will tend to be hiding in cover so it's not always about a moving target.

I'm sure others can think of other things too

I don't think you've truly experienced DayZ until you've hancuffed someone, stripped them of their clothes, put a burlap sack on their head and forcefed them rotten food...

Only to release them and have them fistfight another captive to death for 1 dose of antibiotics.

The standalone is a pretty good experience given how far it has yet to go. I cannot say I'm disappointed with the 80+ hours I've already put into it, and the beauty is that it'll only get better.

i think you'll find you've not truly experienced it until you and a friend stalk someone on Lingor for an hour who has found a chopper but no fuel. track him to the top island and crawl for 20 mins to get near him, then take him out.

an hour of stalking leading to about 3 shots fired....but it pretty much sums up the varied gameplay of dayz....

These vids are a good indicator of the fun you can have in dayz (and lingor)

i might be but because my wrist is knackered i can't play more than an hour or so using the mouse before it hurts so i'm trying to keep off of games using the mouse as long as possible.

i think (personally speaking) its better starting off on your own. if you start off with people around you, you sort of feel protected and that element of "crap i could die any minute" lessens. the first few times you play should be the element of being scared to die. i know when i started, i was so precious about my kit, being so careful not to be seen. when i played with others, it didnt matter as much as if i died there was a good chance they'd protect the body/take my stuff or someone would have spares....so it was more like a respawn.

I was mad into DayZ about 14 months ago, I'm betting it's moved on a bit since then (never heard of Lingor until this thread!) but I love the idea of a) a new place to explore and b) gearing up quicker.

@L3OUGH I'll PM you my Steam ID, and hopefully will be on tonight from about 8pm onwards :)

Unless it's me who's helping out. ;)

Ah well, enjoy your first hundred "oh sorry, thought you were a bandit" deaths.....

God... you kill some people a couple of times by accident and they hold it against you for AGESSSSSSSSSSSSS......................

Wish I left you for the zombies on the side of the road when I crashed your car now.....
