Printer to print on DVDs

Can anyone suggest (and quote for, if applicable) a printer that will print on printable CDs and DVDs? our Epson R265 is on its last legs!

 

Preferably (a) not HP and (b) one for which cheap compatible ink is available, but it may be a case of any port in a storm!

Do these actually exist any more? if not, what's the alternative? we use one to print the DVDs that go out in the prospectus*

We have a Microboards G3 to print on our DVDs. It has a nasty habit of dieing at the slightest hiccup but it gets the job done. You can set up a print job and feed it 50 DVDs it will burn and print them for you.

I got a canon iP4600 that i use. Ink is cheep, And its not let me down yet.

I have an Epson PX710W at home that prints onto DVDs/CDs, but in school these days I have a lightscribe drive (well lots of them in fact) that I use for putting down basic text to the disc media. Ok, if you want full graphics and not just text on them then it can take 15-20 mins per disk, but if you just want plain text, then it can do it in 3-4 mins and there's no ink involved and the media's quite cheap these days.

Another +1 for the epson PX710W... Although, the question "will lightscribe at the time of burning not do?" has also come up in the discussion!

Isn't lightscribe horrifically slow? Plus you wouldn't be able to get all of the pretty colours either.

As I said, if you want full graphics (ok not with pretty colours) then it can take quite some time, but if you just want simple text it's not too bad.

 

I think that with a good cover to go with it (either for the DVD case or a brochure that the DVD is going in) Lightscribe has a more professional finish, but it's all consideration.

I have an old Epson r300, cheap as chips on ebay and a full set of 6 inks will cost you less than a fiver.

Just be sure they sell the tray with it .. A lot of people seem to sell the old Epson printers that need the separate trays but then don't have the trays .. also, if they've been using compatible inks in it, the print head will likely be buggered (I had an R300 I had to eventually get rid of because of this) ..

Lightscribe seems to be worth a shot - I'll see what the powers that be say to having a Mono image rather than the pretty colour one fortunately black and gold are our school colours so that works out nicely!
