How do you connect an iPad to a Interactive White Board?

There are assorted remote-control apps available, several of which use a VNC server installed on the computer connected to the IWB to make your iPad act as a large mousepad-type input device for the IWB. Handy as the teacher can keep separate stuff (pupil details, class lists, etc) open on the iPad as well as using it to control the projected screen.

You can also use an Apple TV - the feature you are looking for is called AirPlay Mirroring, which allows you to mirror the display of the iPad on to a screen connected to the Apple TV. It seems to work well, although I don't know how you go about managing a whole school full of Apple TVs or how much bandwidth they use. I'm also not sure about security - AirPlay is an extension of the RTSP protocol as used in CCTV and similar systems, but I don't know if it includes some kind of encryption. A version of AirPlay is currently supported by XBMC, which seemingly runs on the Raspberry Pi, so you could connect a Raspberry Pi up to a projector and use it to display stuff from your iPad. I don't think XBMC supports full display mirroring yet, though, I think you can show, say, a YouTube video, although full mirroring might be a future feature.

I understand Smart are bringing out an iPad version of their Notebook software at some point soon. You'd hope that would have full two-way integration between the Smart board and the iPad, so the Smart board would act as an outsized iPad (the latest Smart boards support multi-touch, although I'm not sure how many simultanious points).

Has anyone any idea if Tether works with iPads one of my teachers is telling me we need to buy in Doceri to get IWB functions out of our iPads? All flipping new to me!!!

Well you don't need Doceri, but it may add something to the experience?

Depends which model the 400 series is few simultaneous touches than the 800 series :)

As for iPads on the projectors, I know of a local school using Apple TVs for the job and reporting good things with them and simple to use which must be a bonus!

With AirServer:

AirServer - The game console for Mac/PC has arrived

Mirroring your iPad's display now works on Windows (Vista/7) as well as Mac OS X. I've just installed AirServer on my home PC and am suitibly impressed - it was around £5 for my single copy, but they do also do bulk licenses 25 at a time for £50 or so and the installer seems to come as a proper MSI and everything. It's at version 0.9 right at the moment as AirPlay sound is still being worked on. It'd probably be a good idea to check up on the RTSP / AirPlay protocol's bandwidth usage before installing around the whole school, mind.

It doesnt seem to work very well either, I get a few frames of mirroring then it dies.

Will see if they send me a different non facebook version for testing.

Just something to throw in here, and I'm not sure if it applies to the Apple TV solution or not, but certainly direct connections you need an iPad 2 or later, with iPad 1 then the app has to have mirroring programmed into it else it won't work (we have a trolley full of iPad 1 and there are only a couple of Apps that will allow mirroring on the device, thus it's not true mirroring I guess, but we simply use the Apple Port to VGA adapter - we have Apple ones, but I know a few people who have the generic versions that work just as well.

Ah! I wondered why the link to the free version download didn't work, I had to go straight to the PayPal payment option. It seems to work a treat at home but not so far at work. I can't think what the problem would be either - I've checked firewall settings and so on, and our network definatly supports AirPlay as we've had the iPad connect to an Apple TV in another room. I've sent them a support email, I'll see if I get a response.

All email to them keeps bouncing -

Status: 4.4.7 (Persistent transient failure - routing/network: delivery time

expired)

This then mean you get the following message every time it starts up when behind a our proxy.

When it does connect to its update server it gives you a "You are up-to-date!" message instead - rather annoying. I've just got a support email back from them that points out you need to have either iTunes or Bonjour Print Services for Windows (see Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2) installed for the iPad to actually be able to discover the Air Server machine.

There is a bug in the current version of AirServer which will hinder activation if you are behind a proxy server while using AirServer for PC.

We will be addressing this bug in the next update.

Meanwhile we recommend you to activate AirServer using a different network that isn't located behind a proxy server.

Official line from them RE: Proxies, waiting for an ETA on the next version.
