RM CC4 + Laptops on Wifi

It does sound a bit strange tbh, on my laptop here the applying machine settings is about 2 - 5 seconds so way off anything you are experiencing. RM have had a bloat problem for a while and it could be that wireless is just tipping the balance.

 

You could try placing a test machine in a different OU with no policies applied?

Bit more info, moved it outside of where the RM GPOs are, and, wow, it starts so much quicker, starts as quick as I would expect, time to deny apply policy rights to each of the RM policies and try again, slowly add policies.

 

Ok, looks like something in the All Stations Policy is causing it.

Another update, can't seem to replicate the removal GPOs again now, odd, anyhow, disabled various startup processes using msconfig, seems to have helped, will slowly add them back in see what's locking it up (maybe sophos)

Could it be that your AV is running a memory scan before connecting?

The manually joined PC was acting kid of weird where it would apply pc settings after you logged in

Little difficult to read that post, but how is it going now?

 

I am in the same boat as you but have just had a break through with my logon speed! Got the initial logon from 1 min 30 to 30 seconds, and second logon to under 10 seconds meaning that a laptop is up and running in under a minute from off.

 

All turned out to be permissions on the public folders (I had deny permissions initially to stop users from writing to them) this meant that Windows was trying to read the desktop.ini files and was timing out on each one, that has had me going for about a day now!

The logon isn't the problem, its the actual starting up.

 

Applying computer settings is taking 2 minutes or longer (depending on Wifi capacity)

Have you run procmon from Sysinternals?

 

Check for boot logging activity, is there some startup scripts which are slowing down?

Have you had any breakthrough with your laptops? We've just had a new CC4.3 network commissioned by RM during Easter as part of BSF. They've also installed a managed wireless infrastructure for us and 5 laptop trolleys with 15 laptops in each. One of our departments who have 4 of the 5 trolleys are complaining about long logon times. I haven't even started to investigate yet as its been bedlam since returning from Easter as we also moved into a new building!!

We have 35 HP 100E netbooks which we have replaced the standard drive and 1GB RAM with a 64GB SSD drives and 2GB RAM on CC4.2, will check our bootup times and logon times and report back tomorrow.

CC4 via wifi on older laptops is an issue for us, 10 mins to a usable desktop environment is not uncommon. Standalone versions of the same laptops with W7 and RMVP5 in same room and its 2 mins to usable.

We are having the same Issue ourselves - netbooks are painfully slow but the laptops are performing ok. I find that installing Office 2010 is making the issue worse for both our laptops and desktops which I don't understand. We also have RM looking into this issue with little success so far. This is not a wireless issue as the login time is pretty much the same with 1 laptop or 10. This also makes me wonder how much the spec of machines is a big factor regarding RM CC4 Networks.

RMVP5 is a resource killer I have found (much like any of the other Symantec products imo)

Try disabling the WMI service, if the applying computer settings lag is removed then the WMI database is broke; had this on a few servers in the past but never a laptop!

I installed win7 pro and a select few applications that are most used, and able to run fairy quick on the 4 yr old laptops we have and imaged all of them, so now we have a class set of unmanaged windows 7 laptops that are actually used with a few programmes, instead of laptops with everything on but too slow to load and no one wants to use them, we now get some use out of them, if your with rm like us you can ask about using the rm umanaged script, which will script various setting, such as mapped drives etc, and allow filtered use of internet etc.

 

Laptops are logged in and running under 2 minutes from boot.

Going back to Windows 7 Pro, we just did a class test, and everyone could log onto the laptops (some were even installing updates), so it looks like it's an XP issue.

In our school, we have wi-fi boxes in all of the departments and the signal is usually between 3 to 5 bars, they are on CC4 running on Windows 7

Applying computer settings means its processing workstation GPO's (mostly) you can turn on USERENV logging (google it - pretty easy) then boot up the station you can then see in verbose mode everything thats happening as the GPO's apply...
