LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 The other option is openELEC which is much lighter to start with, it's essentially an single purpose OS. OpenELEC on RaspBerry Pi. Our first ARM device supported! | OpenELEC - The living room PC for everyone Yeah that's what I'll be doing, no point in having a huge backend wasting space and resources!
Sirbendy Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Yep, I run Openelec on my Athlon x2 as a dualboot for Win7, as it's main "non-geek" task is DVD/FTA/WEBTV, since we binned our license and went TV free. Got the plugins for 4od and 5od too, although they're buggy at the mo. Lovely little setup, booting/running happily off an old 1gb USB stick. Lets hear it for all the programs I want to watch of a tech nature with none of the junk..heh..
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Lunch time annoyance: forgot my work machines card reader can't handle SDHC Oh well, plenty to do tonight - need photos for a competition, want to program my new Logitech Harmony 700 remote and of course get the R-Pi up and running, between that I also need to feed my family I suppose
Jawloms Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Not yet. And I was one of the 6am crowd! You could always get one of ebay. The first ones went for £200+, but now they're an absolute bargain at nearer £100! Or not........
featured_spectre Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 See I'm glad I'm waiting, a lot of bugs should be worked out by the time I get one :-)
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Just a quick update; this is being posted from the R-Pi itself! It's not pretty, it's not fast, but it's working!
Jawloms Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 See I'm glad I'm waiting, a lot of bugs should be worked out by the time I get one :-) I could be well off the mark here, but a lot of the people who rushed to buy the first ones will be pleased to get the bugs to try and mend them! A bit like people who race old cars in the hopes they break down and they have to mend them......
sted Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 but is it a usable speed for say surfing the net and playing youtube vids etc? well amazon have posted my wireless keyboard and mouse for mine lol cost more than the pi itself iirc lol
zag Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 but is it a usable speed for say surfing the net and playing youtube vids etc? well amazon have posted my wireless keyboard and mouse for mine lol cost more than the pi itself iirc lol From the videos I have seen no it isnt. Lots of screen updating problems ect. I think its more of a programming device or special projects.
sted Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 From the videos I have seen no it isnt. Lots of screen updating problems ect. I think its more of a programming device or special projects. ive seen both thats the problem flawless 1080p and pants video might just be a codec thing
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 but is it a usable speed for say surfing the net and playing youtube vids etc? At the moment, no, browsing is slow, I didn't even attempt YouTube! But your next quote... ive seen both thats the problem flawless 1080p and pants video might just be a codec thing ..brings me to a point I want to make and @nephilim was probably hinting at - this is very early stages of development. At the moment, it works and that's all that matters, but I do think things will get better as the Debian arm is tweaked to the device. Obviously, we're not about to make these £25, 700Mhz ARM computers our main PCs! But look at what Android devices are capable of with the same power (albeit without driving 1080p displays!) - it can get better, but it isn't there yet. Just look at OpenELEC; with a streamlined backend, this is more than capable of running XBMC smoothly with full HD video. I'd really like to see if I can get Android running on this thing mind you...
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Oh, and here's a pic of it running; perhaps the first to visit EduGeek? 1
Dos_Box Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 wonder what it reports itself as to the website? I'll have a look *Mind you, it may be logged but not reported until later*
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 wonder what it reports itself as to the website? Interesting question! I'll have a look *Mind you, it may be logged but not reported until later* If it helps you find it, the browser is Midori (doubt you get many hits from that one!)
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 @LosOjos: What OS/version are you running on it? It's Debian Squeeze, unsure of the exact version I'm afraid but it's the latest on the Raspberry Pi site (here). I've packed it all away now but if you need more specifics I can update later on?
Dos_Box Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 We're showing 2 Debian visits today, but can't isolate the exact time I'm afraid. 1
LosOjos Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 We're showing 2 Debian visits today, but can't isolate the exact time I'm afraid. That's a shame... I'll boot it up later and see if I can find what it reports itself as 1
Dos_Box Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 It also wouldn't surprise me if there was (eventually) a Pi-Nux once they get rolled out and en-mass development begins.
eclass Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 141 day lead time for us in the USA!! sooooo pissed :/
rad Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I got another email from RS... I was a late starter, I registered interest about mid day.
kism3t Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Thank you @Los0Jos for including me and bringing the Raspi over to my office, all I can say is thank god we had a seat and a spare 45mins... it was a tad bit slow Still very impressive though and I am very much looking forward to mine being delivered! Shame we didnt have time to test the 1080p demo

Shame we didnt have time to test the 1080p demo Yeah that was a shame, I'm wondering how it'll handle 1080p video on top of Debian... as you say, browsing was slow! Hopefully I'll get time to do some more tests tonight (got Arch on it last night but didn't even get as far as setting up a GUI!)
