LosOjos Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 What disk drive are you using on it? An Integral 8GB Class 4 SD card - I initially bought a class 10 which I then found out won't work and I've heard people report corrupted file systems with class 6 so I'll stick with class 4 for now. I've tried a couple of external USB drives/pens but it wasn't immediately obvious whether it had recognised them or not (it didn't automatically mount them); may just be that I need to polish my Linux foo though!
CHR1S Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Is a class 4 fast enough to not be the bottleneck? I ran XBMC off a USB stick before and it was deadly slow.
LosOjos Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Is a class 4 fast enough to not be the bottleneck? I ran XBMC off a USB stick before and it was deadly slow. It could be causing a bottleneck, but for now there's not much choice. Class 10 cards don't work, class 6 are causing people grief and I don't fancy sitting there getting everything up and running only to get a corrupted card and have to start over! So for now, class 4 is the fastest [reliable] card you can use...
kism3t Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 There has been a lot of discussion about what class is better on the Raspi forum Here, and how SD cards would work a little different with the Raspi than say a camera etc. It looks as if most of the recomended cards are Class 4 at the moment RPi VerifiedPeripherals - eLinux.org. It will be interesting to see if people get class 10 to work and if it is any faster.
CHR1S Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 The Bit-tech review uses a class 10 and reports no errors and a quick google found me nothing, got any links?
CHR1S Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Found this - Cards supporting the UHS signalling modes (which appears to include most Class 10 cards, regardless of size) are currently problematic, but a fix is probably going to appear sometime.
LosOjos Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Found this - I was just about to type that here from my phone (for some reason, that thread is blocked here, although I can access the rest of the forum ) I'm not saying that class 10 will never work, it's just generally accepted that class 4 is a lot more reliable right now (and that thread is the sole source of info, they've only just shipped don't forget!) I might take a gamble on a class 10 to see what happens though, won't hurt to try. As @kism3t was saying though, for the purposes of running an OS, a higher class isn't necessarily better. They're designed for writing large chunks of data quickly (as in a camera, photo taken, image saved, done), not for constant RW cycles as in an OS environment. In the coming weeks, I'm sure somebody will do some proper benchmarking as it's going to be a major factor to consider for anybody using an R-Pi
CHR1S Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Just been looking at the SD benchmark thread myself and can see what you mean about the RW cycles. Be interested to see what you find.
SHimmer45 Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Yeah that was a shame, I'm wondering how it'll handle 1080p video on top of Debian... as you say, browsing was slow! Hopefully I'll get time to do some more tests tonight (got Arch on it last night but didn't even get as far as setting up a GUI!) isnt debian lacking the correctly accelerated drivers for the video which makes the interface drag its ass?. i havent brought one yet but iam doing to once supply improves so have been watching the various threads and blogs with interest
HodgeHi Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 I was just about to type that here from my phone (for some reason, that thread is blocked here, although I can access the rest of the forum ) The swear word close to the top of page 4 may have caused the filter to kick in.

That aside, it's still pretty incredible that you can buy a brand new computer for around £25; Of course it's not going to replace your £500+ work station, but I'm sure it'll find itself in many useful roles over the coming months
LosOjos Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 The swear word close to the top of page 4 may have caused the filter to kick in. Possibly yeah; I really don't like the R-Pi forums, full of smug "you don't even know that!?" types and trolls.

Plug in a USB drive, install Debian (sans X) and away you go... cheap, energy efficient and silent!
Oaktech Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Well, I've just called CPC and my projected delivery date is 8th may... Woop, Woop. My keyboard is here, my sd card is in the post and i'll buy the wifi adapter next month!
