If you had one day in New York, what would you do or see ?

Shop, but be careful what you purchase as you don't want to be stung for duty. Can find some great bargains on clothing even in Manhatton, though most people who shop for cloths will go to an out of town retail park.

Personally the "big" attractions, empire states/statue liberty etc etc, "however" I'm not sure I'd do the whole walk up them etc etc, if you're limited to 1 day. When I was looking at going there I found some nice boat tours that did all the main attractions on a single trip, just from the power boat rather than visiting them etc Looks quite cool.

We had two days when we were in New York, but the highlight was the boat trip around the island. Well worth doing.

In the summer, Central Park in the early evening is nice. You can go and watch the baseball. I was advised to leave with the baseball teams though and not hang around after dark.

Hit the old record shops and go digging for old house, electro and techno vinyl from mid eighties to early nineties. Some of the best tracks came from Chicago and Detroit from that era. Memories of youth.

I'm currently in NYC :-) Just about to start day 4.

 

So far highlight, for me, has been empire state building, closely followed by strolling round central park. Going to see Statue of Liberty today and doing a boat tour as well as going up the Rockefeller Centre :-)

 

Although seeing The Muppets, Sesame Street and The Fraggles at Carnegie Hall was pretty cool as well :-)

Just come back from NY myself and if I had just one day, if the weather was good, I would walk, as we did, from Central Park (nice place but not that special - we have lovely parks in this country) right down past all the buildings you have heard of - Grand Central Station, Library, Chrysler, Empire State, Rockefeller, Flatiron, Wall Street etc.

The subway is clean and quick if you want to plan where to go.

Going up the Empire State etc is great but you need to book EXPRESS tickets online in the UK because then you get swept past the enormous queues (2 hours by 10.30am) and feel like royalty!

I wouldnt shop, even if you like it - unless you normally pay £60 for a pair of Levis which you can get for $60, I couldnt see much worth buying

As for the World trade Centre - you have to get tickets for the actual site - and wait - and TBH it was all a bit mawkish and I think paying is a bit out of order. You can get a good idea and feel of the place by walking around. There is a lovely memorial in Battery Park which is the sculpture that was in the courtyard between the buildings - it is a battered globe and far more touching than the other things there.

I did the 3 hour one - was fantastic and great value for money - only $38

When you have wanted to vist somewhere for around 25 years and then finally get the chance to do it, plus the weather was great etc - its something I won't forget. Now have a week in an office sorting out IT problems !! Fly back Friday evening ready to be on call the weekend.......
